Chapter 56

Josie sat on the swing in the garden, kicking her legs back and forth, not paying attention to Lizzie at all. Lizzie just stared at her until she noticed.
“Why are you giving me that face?” Josie asked, over-exaggerating her words like she was running through a script.
“Because you look miserable,” Lizzie said. “Am I that unbearable?”
“No.” Josie sighed and stood up. “But I do know what could make twin day better, though.”
“What?”
Josie started digging around in a nearby plant bed.
“Gardening’s not really my thing, Jo."
“Umm …” Josie kept digging around, muttering to herself. “I know we stashed it here somewhere.”
“Who is ‘we’ and what did you stash?”
“‘We’ is me and Penelope. And what we stashed is -” Josie pulled out a bag of what looked like small clovers. “- this!”
“Witch weed?” Lizzie furrowed her eyebrows. “You know I’m not supposed to -”
“It’s magic!” Josie said, opening the bag and popping one into her mouth. “It doesn’t count.” She chewed and pulled a face at the taste before she held one out to Lizzie. “Your turn.”
It didn’t take long before the witch weed took effect. Josie sprawled out across the swing, rocking gently in the breeze, a smile on her face. Lizzie laid out on the flat rock, her arms over her eyes.
“You don’t look like you’re having very much fun,” Josie said.
“My eyes hurt and the world keeps spinning,” Lizzie answered, her words muffled by her sleeves. “It’s make me seasick.”
“Your world is spinning. Mine is making it look like that gargoyle is moving.” Josie collapsed backwards in a fit of giggles.
Lizzie groaned. “Even your voice is making me nauseous.”
“Well maybe you shouldn’t have taken any,” Josie said. “Dad said that some things will react bad with your meds.”
“Yeah, thanks.” Lizzie could feel even more irritation than usual slipping in.
“Are you mad at me?”
“No. More annoyed.” Lizzie sat up. “I think it’s the witch weed.”
“Well my witch weed has something it wants to tell you.” Josie tucked her hand under her cheek and smiled.
“What does it want to say?”
“That I have a secret - a secret that’s been eating me up inside.” Josie closed her eyes. “You know how someone sabotaged your campaign? It was me.”
The irritation Lizzie had felt turned into an anger and she stood up, ignoring the way the world spinned. She put one foot in front of the other, hurrying back towards the school.
“I didn’t want to!” Josie called out. “Honestly, Lizzie! I really thought you’d drop out when I said I wanted to run!” Josie frowned at her sister’s retreating back. “Lizzie? Lizzie, wait. I can’t move that fast.”
“Hold it in, Lizzie,” Lizzie muttered to herself as she pushed through the front door. She could feel it, like a balloon swelling inside her skull, ready to pop at any moment. But it needed to wait, just until she was somewhere private, somewhere she could let it explode. “Not here. Not here. Anywhere but here.” Lizzie stopped dead in her tracks as a large, stone gargoyle landed right in front of her. “Oh no …”
It just stared at her with its glowing red eyes under heavy stone eyebrows. Lizzie waited for it to make a move, but it didn’t.
“Well come on!” she shouted. “I’m not fighting you!” Her voice grew quiet. “Kill me.”
