Chapter 44
“This seems like a violent game,” Josie said, eyeing the werewolves nervously. The medicine ball whipped around the gym like it weighed nothing. “Does it hurt when you get hit?”
Rafael shrugged and smiled. “Hurts less knowing you’ll heal.”
“Is that supposed to be a metaphor?”
“Maybe.” Rafael’s smirk grew. “What do you want it to be a metaphor for?”
“For me and Lizzie.” Josie sighed and leaned against the wall. “Like maybe I should worry less, because she’s my twin and we’ll always heal in the end.”
“Do I get to know what happened yet? Beyond you winning?”
Josie shook her head. “No.”
“Then … I don’t know if it can be a metaphor.”
The medicine ball rolled towards them, stopping at their feet. Josie bent down to pick it up and couldn’t. Rafael bent down next to her, putting his hands on the ball.
“But this can be a metaphor,” he said, tilting his head towards her.
“For what?”
Rafael lifted the medicine ball easily. “I’ll always be there to help you.”
Josie glanced down at her feet. “You should probably give them their ball back.”
“Yeah.” Rafael cleared his throat, cheeks growing warm. “I think I’ll join this round. Catch you around.”
Josie watched him join Jed and the other wolves before she turned and left the gym.
