Chapter 40
“Have you heard anything about these ‘dragon’ sightings?” Lizzie asked, trying to toss her hair and lean against the lockers at the same time. She almost tripped over nothing doing it.
The cheerleader she was talking to looked her up and down disdainfully. “Uh … no.” There was laughter hiding just behind her words and not the friendly kind.
“Well, I guess it’s not, like, an actual dragon,” Lizzie blabbered on, hands fluttering around nervously. “It’s, like, a big prank or whatever. I just thought it was cool.”
“I still haven’t heard of it.” The cheerleader was making eye contact with the rest of her squad over Lizzie’s shoulder now.
“Are you sure?” Lizzie stood up straight. “I mean, if you thought really, really hard -”
The cheerleader held up a hand. “Then I’d still be certain.” She rolled her eyes and walked around Lizzie to rejoin her squad, the group of them pointing and laughing as Lizzie watched. Chin tucked and eyes low, she hurried past them in the direction of the front doors.
MG and the others were nowhere to be found, probably off together without her, but at least that meant the bus was empty for her to cry in.
