Chapter 38
Rafael flopped backwards on Josie’s bed, sprawling out and staring at the ceiling. “So, what’s going on between you and Lizzie?”
“Nothing,” Josie said quickly, laying down next to him. “I mean, it’s just honor council election drama.”
“Because she didn’t win?”
Josie turned her head, coming face to face with Rafael. “Or because I won. I don’t know. It’s weird. There’s just … tension.” Josie sighed. “And she doesn’t really want to talk to me, but she’s my best friend.”
“Well, I’ll talk to you.” Rafael laughed. He nudged her gently. “I’m proud of you for winning.”
“Thanks.” Josie smiled wider. “I really need to hear that from at least someone. And I’m proud of you for … trying?”
The two of them broke out into heaps of giggles, laughing away the embarrassment that was Rafael's campaign.
When it quieted down again, Josie folded her hands over her stomach and swallowed heavily. “It’s just … Lizzie doesn’t seem to be happy unless she’s the twin in the spotlight.” She paused. “And this time it was me.”
“So, she’s jealous?”
Josie glanced over at him again. “Yeah, but she’ll get over it.”
“Or maybe she just wanted a fair fight.”
Rafael and Josie both shot up at the sound of the voice in the doorway.
“Oh, don’t mind me,” Jade said, smiling darkly. “Lizzie said I could borrow her Components of a Spell textbook.”
Josie glared at her. “It’s on her bed.”
“Thanks!” Jade skipped over to where the textbook was plainly in sight, clearly left there for her, complete with a homemade snack from Lizzie on top. Jade clutched it close to her chest. “See you around, kids.” She glanced at Rafael before looking pointedly at Josie. “And tell Penelope I said hi.”
The two of them waited silently as Jade closed the door and headed down the hallway. Josie held her breath, watching Rafael turn to her slowly.
“Lizzie’s friend is kind of hot.”
Her relief exploded into a grin. “And totally into girls.”
The two of them collapsed backwards in another fit of laughter.
