Chapter 37
Landon turned on the faucet, letting the water run without touching it. He kept getting flashes, like dreams he had forgotten, coming back to him vividly - but only for a second before they faded away again.
He saw his hand around a knife, pulling it out of his jacket.
The knife looked familiar. He was sure he had seen it somewhere before, but he couldn’t place where. In a book, maybe? The more he tried to place it, the further the memory got until he couldn’t even remember the color of the handle anymore.
He stuck his hands under the stream of water, accepting that the memory was gone, when he got a flash of a road sign reflecting headlights at him.
Route 29. Why would he be seeing signs for Route 29? He was on a bus, going somewhere. But where would he be going? When? Why?
“Pull it together,” he muttered to himself, splashing the water over his face and staring at his reflection in the dirty mirror.
He barely even recognized himself anymore. What if he was sick? What if his mind was going in some horrific but very human way and these blackouts were just the first sign? He needed help.
He nodded along to his thoughts rhythmically, mentally planning a visit to the counseling office as soon as he returned. They would know what’s wrong.
But what if they did know what was wrong? Landon’s eyes snapped up and his stomach dropped. What if they did know what was wrong and they still couldn’t fix it? What if they thought he could become too unhinged and sent him away? For his safety? For the other students' safety?
He slammed the faucet handle down hard enough to shake the cheap sink, running his hands over his face again and taking a deep breath.
He just had to figure this out himself.
