Chapter 36

“My dad watched me cry about how I didn’t get elected, and then he just hands Hope Mikaelson a spot!” Lizzie seethed to MG, throwing her arms out. Her voice echoed off the cavernous walls of the empty gym.
“She’s not a witch, though,” MG said quietly. “And she’s not a werewolf.” He caught Lizzie’s glare and cleared his throat. “I just mean, it’s not like she took the witch spot from you.”
Lizzie stared at him in shock. MG stood his ground,
“But I think you already knew that.”
Lizzie closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger that was quickly rising. “Well she doesn’t have to be so fucking special all the time.” Lizzie grabbed his hands. “Why can’t I be special just -” The sound of a phone buzzing cut her off. She dropped her eyes to MG’s shorts. “What’s that?”
“The school phone.”
Lizzie took a step back. “Where were you keeping it?”
“It’s your dad. Do I answer it?”
“I think we have to.” Lizzie waited patiently for MG to answer the call and then on cue, she cheerfully said, “Hi, Dad!”
Alaric’s voice came through less cheerfully. “Lizzie-bear, I need to talk to everyone. Am I on speakerphone?”
Lizzie pulled her lower lip into her mouth, entire body freezing.
“Actually, Dr. S., we split up,” MG said without hesitation, earning him a hard nudge from Lizzie and a dirty look.
“You split up?” Alaric put his hands on his hips, swallowing his frustration. “Did I or did I not say stick together?”
MG swallowed heavily. “You … did.”
“Okay, now I need to speak to Hope. I have new info on the dragon, and I know she's done her research."
“Well, she’s not here right now,” Lizzie singsonged. “Can we take a message?”
“Lizzie, please.” As Alaric pleaded with daughter, he didn’t notice the large pair of wings unfurling behind him.
“No, Dad, you’re just going to have to trust your own gene pool for once.”
Alaric turned slowly at the sound of a twig snapping, face falling as he looked up at the dragon towering behind him.
“Dad?”
He jumped back as the dragon flapped its wings hard enough to bend the tops of the trees with the air it moved.
“Get Hope!” he shouted, dodging a breath of fire just in time and hanging up the phone.
“Did you hear that, babe?” Lizzie asked with a smile as MG tucked the phone back away.
“That we need to find Hope and the others?”
“No,” Lizzie corrected him slowly. “That is the sound of our opportunity to be the heroes for once. When are we gonna get a chance like this again, MG? My dad thinks he needs Hope’s help, but we know that we’re just as capable. We can detective the hell out of this dragon case.” She smiled at her boyfriend expectantly. “Are you with me or are you with me?”
“I think we should listen to your dad and go find everybody else,” MG said honestly.
Lizzie recoiled. “Then you can do it alone.” She turned, making a show of how angry she was, and made sure her back was to him by the time the tears of betrayal gathered in the corners of her eyes.
