Chapter 33
“A dragon?” Damon asked, raising his eyebrows at Alaric. “How much have you been drinking?”
“I’m not the one seeing it, you dick.”
Bonnie shook her head. “No, I’ve heard the rumors too.”
“Well, we can’t keep compelling the entire town,” Caroline said. She sat on the couch in her office. “Even with a school full of vampires, we’re outnumbered. That’s just asking for one mistake to slip through the cracks.”
“I have Dorian looking into anything he can find on how to defeat or trap a dragon,” Alaric supplied.
“And we sent a group of kids to Mystic Falls High to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.”
“You sent kids in to this?” Bonnie arched an eyebrow.
“Volunteers.” Alaric sat up straighter. “We sent volunteers into this. And only to watch. They’ve been told not to engage with it.”
“They’re kids,” Damon scoffed. “They’re not gonna listen.” He looked to his wife and gave her a quick, comforting smile. “But they’ll be fine.” He turned back to Caroline and Alaric. “I assume one of those eager volunteers is Baby Klaus?”
“Yes, one of the kids is Hope.” Caroline swallowed heavily.
“Perfect.” Damon smirked. “A Mikaelson will always get their answers.”
“And they will all be on their best behavior,” Caroline said forcefully. “Lizzie’s with them.”
“Yeah, that’s … reassuring.”
Bonnie steered the conversation back on course. “So how do we help?”
“General damage control for now. If you were still a vampire -“ Alaric looked at Damon, “- I’d say start compelling people, but for now, send them our way.”
“And keep it from spreading.” Caroline stood up and stepped behind her desk. “Call it a hoax or a prank or whatever. Just discredit it in any way. We can’t have the locals getting involved.”
Alaric nodded grimly. “We don’t need humans poking around what we do here.”
"And the knife?"
"A work in progress," Alaric said. "It must've been a student. I've been through all of the staff."
"Yeah, well," Damon stood. "I may be a human now, but I'm still a reformed serial killer. I'd be willing to help interrogates some students." He smiled jokingly.
"Nobody needs to interrogate any students." Alaric raised a hand. "I know my kids. Whoever took it or knows something will step forward when they can."
"That's an awful lot of faith in some sixteen year-olds." Damon narrowed his eyes.
Alaric narrowed his back. "Like I said: I know my kids."
