Chapter 32

The Salvatore students stepped off the bus slowly, looking around the drab Mystic Falls High campus. It was nothing compared to the rolling hills and the old Salvatore mansion. MG and Landon nervously eyed the group of football players staring back at them. Lizzie held her head high, strutting past the cheerleading squad. She winked at the short redheaded one in the middle of the squad, earning her dirty looks from the rest of them, but she never wavered. Hope and Kaleb walked with their heads straight forward, looking past the human students.
Landon was so busy looking between MG and the football team that he bumped into Lizzie, stepping on the back of her shoe.
“Sorry,” he said quickly.
“Seriously, Mophead?” Lizzie clenched her jaw. “I was making an entrance!”
“Sorry.” Landon’s eyes were wide as he looked up at Lizzie. “It won’t happen again.”
“You bet your ass it won’t." Lizzie got in his face. "I don’t know who invited you along, but this is an actual mission."
“G-Got it. I’ll do better.”
“Lizzie,” Hope interrupted. “Can we focus?”
“It actually may be hard to, Hope.” Lizzie turned on her. “What with your huge ego suffocating us all.” She tossed her shoulders back. “But I’ll push that aside, because that’s what heroes do. And that’s what I am today.” She put her hands on her hips and power-posed. “I say that we all split up to cover the most ground.”
“Sounds good to me.” Kaleb was already walking away. “I’ll catch you all when the bus heads back.”
MG nodded too. “Landon and I can -”
“Nonsense, babe.” Lizzie put her hands on MG’s shoulders and pulled him close. “You’re with me. The ex-lovers can handle a little awkwardness.” She gave Hope a narrow-eyed look. “It’s what heroes do.”
The two of them headed off, leaving Hope to glare at Landon, who looked away awkwardly.
