Chapter 28
Jade was leaning against the wall, picking at the black nail polish on her fingernails when just the person she was waiting for walked by.
“Congrats on your big win, Josette,” she sing-songed while still looking down at her hands.
Josie stopped, caught off guard. “Thank you?”
“I heard your campaign was pretty cutting-edge.” Jade smirked.
Josie didn’t appreciate the joke.
“Glad it all worked out for you, though. I hope it’s everything you wanted and more.”
Josie glanced down, just for a second, but it betrayed enough.
Jade stood up straight. “Don’t tell me you’re already thinking of backing out.” She stepped closer and closer. “That’s not why you didn’t volunteer to go today, is it?” She leaned into Josie’s face. “Because how ironic would that be? That you thought Lizzie would flake out but then it was you?”
“I’m not flaking out.” Josie swallowed heavily.
“You better not be.” Jade smiled and gave Josie a little wave as she walked away.
