Playing Doctor

God I'm so bored.

I shift in the hospital bed, trying to get comfortable, pulling on my straps.

There's nothing for me to do with me held down this way. Someone needs to let me go. I can't have any fun being held down like this... at least not without someone else in the room anyway. But I don't have anyone to do fun stuff with, and I'm not going to find anyone being strapped down like this. They would need to walk right into the room.

Just then, the wanna be walks through the door.

Please tell me...

"Alyssa Milano would need to walk right into the room."

"What?"

No one comes in.

"Damn it..."

"Alyssa Milano?"

"It's nothing."

He watches me for a moment before responding.

"Okay... how are you doing?"

I raise my arms up in a shrug.

"It depends on who you ask."

"How about your doctors? What do they say?"

"I'm fine."

"Really?"

"Yeah, they just need to let me go."

"That's not what they told me."

They told him about me?

"Why the hell are they telling you anything?"

"The doctors here like me."

"What are you talking about?"

"See, when you're nice to people, and do things for them, they do things for you."

Such an idiot.

"Bite me."

"I already did that, wasn't a fan of the taste."

"You seemed to like it at the time."

"I've been known to like things that are bad for me, and you definitely fall into that category."

"You didn't seem to mind when I had my lips on you."

"Then apparently you have a lot to learn about people."

Okay, this has stopped going anywhere fun.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"I came to check on you."

I watch him for a few moments.

"Why?"

"Because of Sarah... have you figured out what happened yet?"

"No, and why should I?"

"Because it's new, and different."

"Congratulations, you've been introduced to the concept of magic."

"Vampires don't just suddenly turn human. I've been talking to some friends of mine and they say that there's only ever been one other case like this that they've heard of."

This has happened before?

"Which is?"

"A Morha demon. They're apparently able to make vampires human again... through blood magic."

I look down at my hands, the cuts and bruises from the torture still on them.

Blood magic could've done this? Could I have done this to her?

"You don't exactly look like a Morha demon from what I could find. So I have to ask... any demons in your family history?"

That makes me laugh a little.

"What?"

"You think I'm a demon?"

"Half demon... probably."

Part of me can't help but smile at his uncomfortable reaction as I pull my left leg up, bending at the knee and making my hospital gown ride up, exposing my leg more.

"And what part of me seems demonic to you? You've had a pretty good look at me. Did you see any tails? Scales? A change in skin color? I mean, other than pink, obviously."

"Your attitude."

What?

"You're selfish, arrogant and generally don't seem to have any interest in human life other than your own. That seems pretty demonic to me."

He thinks he's funny?

"Hilarious."

He watches me for a few moments.

"Well I hate to disappoint you, but I'm completely human. No demons in my family, at least not in the traditional sense anyway."

"So you're just naturally this way?"

"Just because my family's human, doesn't make them good people. And my ex wasn't exactly the most morally good person in the world."

"And that makes it okay to be a bitch?"

"No, the fact that the world's a horrible place is what makes me a bitch. It's also what makes you a huge moron."

"Yet I'm not the one who got captured by a vampire."

Did he really just say that?

"You're an even bigger idiot than I thought."

He just watches me at that.

"You really think that I would let myself get captured? That I'd be that stupid?"

"Well you haven't given me much of a reason to think otherwise."

"I knew exactly what I was doing."

"Then you did a really good impression of someone who didn't."

"How would you know? You were BARELY there. You came in at the end and did a terrible job fighting a baby vampire."

"I got it done though and the fact that you're alive is proof of that, despite your best effort."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

He points to his neck.

"The rather large chunk of your neck she got a piece of."

"I had to do something, you were basically useless."

"So you offered her your life?"

"She was planning on taking it anyway."

"That doesn't mean you give it to them."

"Well it's not like you were going to get it done."

"Except for the fact that I did."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, why?"

"Because if you're right about me and my blood, then I'm pretty sure I saved us, not you. I was the one who turned her human right? Which means giving her my neck to chew on is probably what saved us. You didn't really do anything at all then, did you?"

"Of course not, I'm sure you'd be just fine with massive blood loss to a passed out former vampire in a dark cave miles away from any kind of hospital."

"You're assuming that survival was the point."

He watches me for a long, slow silence.

"You were... trying to kill yourself."

"I never said that."

"You just said..."

"You really are new at all this aren't you? Just because I was willing to die, doesn't mean I was trying to kill myself."

Just because that was what I was trying to do, doesn't mean I have to tell him that.

"I knew that what I did could kill me, but it was the only way to make sure you had the time to do something. The fact that you're terrible at helping people meant that I had to be willing to die if we were going to live through it."

"That's a pretty dangerous strategy, especially thanks to how you were tortured. You just barely survived, and with the way you woke up?"

"I nearly died, how was I supposed to react?"

"I don't know, but I'm guessing this isn't your first time having your life threatened. Which means you knew that what you did was a bad idea."

"So was waiting for you to do something. I decided dying on my own terms was the better option."

He watches me for a while before tilting his head toward the door.

"Did you hear that?"

What?

The door to my hospital room opens and some idiot steps in.

"I'm afraid I did."

"Who the hell is this?"

"He's your doctor."

"I'm pretty sure my doctor was a girl."

"He's not that type of doctor."

That type? What does he mean by 'that type'?

"What the hell type of doctor is he then?"

"I'm a psychiatrist."

A shrink?

"You let a shrink hear our conversation? Of course he's going to think I'm insane if he thinks I think vampires are real."

"I'm actually well aware of the supernatural. You don't work in a hospital without seeing some pretty weird things and disappearing bodies. Getting to know Connor just confirmed what I already suspected."

Well this can't be heading anywhere good.

"I'm guessing you didn't bring him in here to give me a clean bill of health."

There's a long pause for a moment.

That's what I thought.

"Connor brought your case to my attention because he was concerned about you."

Everyone's always so concerned.

"Of course he is. Everyone's always SO CONCERNED about me. They're always worried about poor little Dawnie. She needs to be protected. Like I can't do anything for myself."

"Is that the way you feel?"

"It's how things ARE Dr. Idiot. No one thinks I can do anything for myself."

The wanna be chimes in suddenly.

"Right..."

"What the hell do you know? We barely know each other."

"You're right, and in that time you've almost died like 3 times. Too often to be an accident."

"So what? That's what happens when you get involved with vampires and demons. What the hell do you care? It's none of your business."

The idiot doctor comes back into the conversation.

"But it is mine, unfortunately."

What?

"What?"

"I'm afraid your conduct is worrying. I'm not sure that I can sign off on your release just yet."

I pull on the straps around my wrists.

"What are you talking about?"

"Unfortunately, I don't know that I can say that you're not a danger to yourself or others."

Again I pull on the straps but they don't budge.

"Why the hell is that?"

"You're clearly not stable enough to be released yet. We're going to have to keep you here for at least a few days. I'm sorry Miss Summers."

That has me really struggling against the straps on my wrists.

"Let me go. I don't belong here."

They both turn to head out the door.

"You're making a mistake. You can't do this to me."

Just before he leaves, the wanna be turns back.

"I'm sorry."

And then I'm alone again.

That son of a bitch.
