El famoso inventor Chen dejo un gran legado para el futuro de la mecánica, dicho legado está siendo desesperadamente buscado por otros ambiciosos inventores que buscan quedarse con el negocio y los inventos del inventor Chen. Resulta que el importante legado de Chen se trata de la única pieza mecánica y alquímica que es capaz de poder tener un alma, este invento lo llamo "Maquina Corazón" y sabiendo que esta pieza al mismo tiempo era peligrosa la oculto en uno de los robots que fueron enviados al pobre pueblo Ignacia, único pueblo agrícola sobreviviente de la guerra civil en Ninjago. Dicho robot portador de la pieza es Zane, nombre que le puso su "dueño" Kai Smith, un joven minero, inventor y herrero que trata de sacar adelante a su familia, a pesar de estar metido en peleas y en varias deudas Kai nunca se ha rendido, pero todo se dificulta con la llegada de la duquesa Skylor, hija del inventor Chen quien al fin pudo encontrar al robot que portaba el invento de su padre, dicho robot es Zane. Skylor quiere comprarlo pero Kai la rechaza al instante y le dice que no se acerque a Zane, pero mientras pasa eso varios de los codiciosos inventores tratan también en una forma de recuperar a Zane, pero eso es algo que Kai nunca va a permitir.
