Chapter 9
Olivia gasped in surprise the moment Rafael led her into the bright show room garage. She couldn't believe how bright and extremely beautiful it was. She couldn't shake off the smell of luxury that filled the room. All her life, she had never been to one of those before. A show room for all the luxurious cars the world had ever known and it wowed her so much.
She could feel her heart beat in excitement as she twirled around, keeping her eyes glued to every detail. She could barely even recognize the cars she saw or the few white people that surrounded each of them, admiring what they could. She could have sworn she'd have died for one of those. She held on tight to Rafael's hands. Unlike her, he happened to be less amazed. He was particularly cool about it, taking glances only when he needed to.
What on earth were they doing there anyway?
She turned to her other side and then stopped for a while the moment she noticed the beauty in front of her. She had never seen anything like it. Rafael turned too the moment he noticed she had stopped walking. She slowly placed her hand on the glass, trying to stop her imaginations from getting the best out of her.
"It's beautiful." She whispered.
Rafael squinted his eyes as he let his gaze linger on l the coal black Ferrari in front of them. It was indeed a beauty and depicted the words "elegance and extremely expensive."
"Buona giornata."
They both turned the moment they heard a voice say something that sounded like a greeting, as an Italian man in an expensive suit walked towards them with a bright smile on his face that could be easily seen behind his face shield. The way he smiled at Rafael, it almost looked like he knew him, like they had met before.
"Mr Rafael." He stretched out his hand for a shake. His leather black gloves shimmered under all the bright light. Of course he did, Olivia didn't need to think for so long before she came to the conclusion that Rafael must have been a regular there. She knew how much the man beside her loved cars. Cars like the one in front of them. That was why he had lots of them and always had a habit of auctioning those he got tired of with time.
"Miguel." Rafael accepted his handshake, letting himself smile a little bit too.
"It's so nice to see you again."
"Likewise." Rafael was trying to be as polite as ever.
Olivia tightened her grip on his arm the moment she recognized the man's gaze shift to her. She was nervous and wasn't sure she was interested in a handshake even when she had literally soaked her hands in sanitizer before she walked into the room.
"And this must be-"
"Olivia." Olivia stretched out her hands too for a shake. She didn't want to be rude. He hesitated a bit and then accepted it .
"It's nice to meet you." He returned her smile and then turned his attention back to Rafael.
"It seems you're here for another purchase sir?"
"No," Olivia stretched out her hands to interrupt. They both turned to her. She let out a nervous laugh. "We actually didn't come here to buy anything, we are just window shopping."
The man scoffed jokingly.
"That's impossible." He said almost in a whisper as he turned to the glass. Rafael smiled a little bit too just as he turned to the glass as well. Olivia was beginning to feel really embarrassed. She let out an exasperated sigh and then turned to the window.
"What do we have here?" The man started, slowly turning to Rafael. "She's really a beauty isn't she?" He asked them as they watched the car twirl around slowly just so they could see every part of it.
"Ferrari laferrari Aperta." He added, his gaze still on the car, "The perfect illusion of grace, difference and luxury. I'm sure you'd really love it."
He slowly turned to Rafael. Rafael pouted. "It'd also be a perfect gift for your woman."
Rafael's gaze shifted back to Olivia. She was so lost in the moment to even notice or hear anything he said. She was already too busy drooling over the car.
"You think so?" Rafael asked the man.
"Yeah." He nodded his head as he chuckled faintly.
Rafael slowly turned to Olivia again who was completely lost in the moment. He scoffed and then turned back to the man beside them.
"We'd take two of it."
The man's jaw dropped just as Olivia slowly turned to face them, her jaw dropping too.
"I beg your pardon?" He asked Rafael.
Olivia quickly reached for his arm. She turned him to face her quickly.
"What are you doing?" She made sure to not blink. Rafael raised his brows.
"You like it, don't you?"
"I do but I didn't ask-"
"It's settled then." He answered and then hurriedly turned back to the man. "We'd take two."
"No we won't." Olivia quickly rushed to the middle of them. Rafael bent his head to meet hers. "We are not buying two of this car." She said with a sarcastic smile on her face. She hoped he could read between that smile.
He frowned.
"Why not?" He asked her.
"Why not?" She repeated almost in a whisper. She couldn't even believe him. She hurriedly turned back to the man behind her, a frown covering her face.
"H-how much is this?" She asked him. He looked at Rafael for a second.
"Uh-" he started and then turned back to her. "Two point two million." He answered her. Olivia raised her brows.
"Naira?"
"E- euros."
She gasped and then quickly turned back to Rafael. She didn't even know what to say to him. He rolled his eyes.
"Before you say anything," he started reaching for her hands. "No, it's not that much of a big deal."
"Two point two million?" She asked him. "How can you even spend that much? I don't even know how to drive."
"Then we'd get you a driver."
"Rafael-"
Olivia was really out of words and what was worse was that she knew she could never stop him from doing what he really wanted to do. Rafael hurriedly turned to the man.
"Her favorite color is blue." He told him. "So preferably, I'd like to get hers in blue and mine in black. "
A huge smile covered the man's face.
"Blue and black." He repeated. "Come with me please." He said as he turned quickly the moment Rafael pulled Olivia closer to him and wrapped his hand around her shoulders, not taking off the smile on his face for one second.
"Come on baby." He told her. "We have a lot of paper work to sign and then we could go see that movie you talked about."
He pulled Olivia away as fast as he could so she didn't have to say anything else. He could see how extremely uncomfortable she was with the way she shrugged her shoulders as he pulled her down the hallway, following the man in front of them. She exhaled.
*************************************************
Olivia held on tight to Rafael's hands as he ran with her under the heavy rain not bothering to shield themselves like the rest of the people than ran around them, trying to look for shelters. It was more like they enjoyed it. Olivia could feel her wet dress clinging to her wet skin and her hair was dripping as Rafael managed to lead them towards what that looked like a row of building with roof shades.
"Oh my God." She told him the moment they stopped under a rooftop of a shop they were now standing in front of.
Olivia tried to wipe off the water from her face. She could not believe how wet she was.
"Are you okay?!" Rafael yelled just so she could hear him admist all that rain noise. She looked at him and then chuckled.
"I'm fine!" She yelled back at him. She wanted to yell the words 'we should have just waited in the theater for the rain to stop' at him so badly but she loved the fact that they got to hold hands and run in the rain just like she had always seen in the movies, just like she had always imagined. She was happy. She was really happy.
"Wait here for a second!" He yelled again. "I'd be right back!"
"What?" Before she could say anything else, she watched him turn quickly and rush towards the tiny shop beside them with flower pots outside.
She exhaled for a second and shook her head. Just what was she supposed to do with him? She reached for her hair, trying to squeeze out the rain water from it. She was so wet everywhere. Her shoes were next. She'd have had the strength to do the same to her shoes if she wasn't so cold.
She took a deep breath, rubbing her arms together as she slowly turned to the huge window behind her. She sniffed a bit, trying to stop herself from shivering all over, rubbing her arms over and over again while her eyes were still glued to what looked like a jewelry store. She sniffed again.
Just how many much more beautiful things did she have to see in Italy? God, it was so beautiful. She had all her attention on the diamond necklace with an anchor pendant that shone so bright in the show box in front of her. She didn't know why but she felt like she wanted to touch it, to really see it. The rain had already stopped falling so freely here and there, and it was just drizzling now. She could see the necklace so clearly. She felt like it was calling for her. It had almost made her forget the rain and the fact that she was shivering all over. It was the most beautiful necklace she had ever seen and then her eyes slowly narrowed to the price tag on it.
Twenty two thousand Euros!
"What are you looking at?"
She jumped immediately at the sound of Rafael's voice. She had been so engrossed in looking at the necklace that she had forgotten everything else. Rafael had come back. She let out an exhale in relief as Rafael turned to the show room just so he could see what she was looking at.
She slowly turned to the rose in his hand and the dried jacket in the other. She scoffed.
"You really had to stop here just to get me a rose?"
He slowly returned his gaze to her. He had almost forgotten what he had bought. She reached for the rose. She took it from him and then raised it to her nose. She took a deep breath, a wide smile appearing on her face. She loved roses, they were her favorite.
"You're freezing." Rafael reminded her as he hurriedly opened the jacket and placed it neatly on her shoulders to keep her warm. She sniffed and smiled at him.
"I'd be fine."
Rafael slowly turned back to the show glass. He was barely listening to her. She noticed. She followed his gaze to the glass. Her eyes widened in surprise as she took a deep breath. She knew exactly what he was going to do next if she didn't stop him.
"Uh-Uh, " she shook her head, "Don't do it." He turned back to her. He narrowed his brows. "I know what you're planning to do Rafael, and I swear to God if you spend another thousand euros all because of me, I'm going to-"
"Chillax." Rafael stretched his hand to reach for her shoulders.
"You honestly need to stop spending on me like this. People might begin to misunderstand."
He scoffed.
"Since when did you care what people think?"
"It's not just about what they think, it's about you, and me. I don't want to get too used to you spoiling me all the time."
"I'm an Igbo man Olivia. It's kind of something that's in my DNA. Spending effortlessly on my woman is something I can't control or run from."
"What if you run out of money because of me?"
"That's not possible."
"Or get bankrupt?"
He chuckled.
"That's not possible either. Isn't that the same thing?"
Olivia scoffed. He was so full of himself and he knew just how upset it made her feel. She rolled her eyes.
"I don't need anything else Rafael, I just want to go get some ice cream and go back to the hotel with you."
Rafael pouted.
"Really?"
"Reallier."
"Okay." He rubbed her arms. "Fine fine, we are not buying anything else. We'd just go get ice cream and go back to the hotel. Is that okay?"
Olivia nodded.
"It's perfect." She whispered, going into his arms. She needed his embrace. She wanted to hold him and watch the rain drops from the rooftop together. Rafael held on tight to her and then turned to the rain. He planted a soft kiss on her forehead. Olivia let out a smile. She rubbed her head on his chest.
Now that was something she could get used to. She could get used to that forever.
