Chapter 61
Felix inhaled sharply, wincing in pain the moment the cold cloth filled with ice came in contact with his cheek, passing a shocking current through his veins.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," Olivia winced too like she was the one with the pain. She couldn't help but feel guilty for what happened to Felix. Rafael had hit him so hard that his cheek was beginning to swell and now she had to put it on herself to take care of it. The look of concern was evident in her eyes.
"It's okay." Felix couldn't count how many times he had said that to her already. He slowly turned to face her, watching her slowly as she dabbed the cloth on his cheek gently.
"To be honest, I don't feel bad this happened to me. At least it gave me a chance to be like this with you." Olivia slowly lowered her gaze to him. "I've always wanted to be alone with you. To talk. There's something I've got to tell you-"
"Felix." Olivia stopped him for a second, slowly lowering her hand from his face as a frown covered her lips. She could see how the smile on Felix's face had begun to fade too. "Felix, I'm sorry but whatever it is you're thinking," She rose her head to meet his. "It can't work between us." She continued, trying to be as brave as she could. "It's because that space in my heart already belongs to someone else."
Felix held his breath for a while and then swallowed hard.
"It's Mr Superman isn't it? The guy that came over earlier? The one that attacked me?"
Olivia let out an exasperated sigh.
"I'm sorry." Now she was beginning to feel so ashamed for what Rafael had done. Just how many times did she need to apologize? "He's not always like that. He's really a good person. We've not just really been on the same page lately and so his emotions got the best of him."
"Does his emotions always get the best of him?" Felix glared at her.
"Ehn?" Olivia wasn't sure she got that.
"What if his emotions get the best of him next time and he takes it out on you?"
Olivia let out a faint chuckle.
"Oh, Rafael is a lot of things but not a woman beater. He wouldn't even hit me if I had a knife to his neck."
"You trust him." Felix pouted. "I must say he's really important to you."
Olivia forced a short smile on her face.
"But I know your story Olivia Kalu. I know a lot about you. A lot about your past. About your ex husband and his family. You keep falling into the trap of all these rich people. Don't you think it's time you turned your boat over and tried the simple life? Try falling in love with someone just like you? Someone whose life isn't rich and complicated? A simple life? Don't you want that?"
"I used to." Olivia inhaled. "But I mean, we can't get to choose who we love, can we? It just happens. We just love. And that's what the situation is between Rafael and I. We have been through so much, you have no idea. We didn't plan to fall for each other, it just happened. That's the thing with love. It just happens." Olivia shrugged her shoulders, hoping he understood perfectly with the way he was starring at her.
Felix let out an exhale and then relaxed in his sofa.
"Okay." He told her.
"Wait." Olivia frowned. "Just like that?" Olivia asked him, excited in her heart that they didn't have to dwell on the subject for so long.
"Of course." He answered. "I just really hope he treats you okay. I hope you both solve whatever issues you have and just be happy. Life is too short to waste precious time in an unending beef because the moment he lets you go, I'd take you from him."
Felix let out a tiny smile on his face that made Olivia smile too. The man in front of her had to be the most cheerful man she had ever met. She let out a soft sigh and then rose the ice to his cheek again. She placed it gently on it.
*************************************************
The cool breeze was everything to her at that moment. Sitting down on the wooden bench, glaring lost at the stars. Olivia took a deep breath, rubbing her arms to keep herself warm. There were so many things she wanted to wish for so bad. So many things about her past she wished she could change. So many things to think of. Like her recent pregnancy discovery. So much for Amy leaving her on her own the entire night to think by herself.
She let out another weak sigh just as she heard a tiny rattle on the gate that scared her. Olivia turned quickly, narrowing her gaze on Rafael's tall figure.
Oh, hell no.
She shook her head and then got up immediately to leave. She wasn't exactly in the mood to fight again. She wasn't going to entertain his drunken self anymore, except that this time, he was sober. She could see it when he called her name to stop her from leaving.
"Olivia please." She didn't take another step. "Wait."
Olivia had her back at him. She could feel him walk closer to her, trying to reach her.
"Don't leave."
Olivia scoffed, feeling his presence just about three feet apart from her. "I just want to talk."
Olivia took a deep breath. Did she really want to? Did she really want to hurt herself even more by engaging in a conversation with him, a conversation where he had to make it clear to her over again how changed he was? How he didn't care about her feelings anymore? Maybe she should. Maybe she needed to hear him give her more reasons to want to be away from him.
Olivia sniffed and then slowly turned to face him, folding her arms right on her breasts.
"What do you want Rafael? Have you come to insult me again? To insinuate on how much of a gold digger I am? How much of a whore I am?"
"I'm sorry." He looked into her eyes, taking a step to her. "I know the way I acted earlier, it was childish and absolutely uncalled for Olivia, the things I said to you, I should not have. I'm not going to blame it on the alcohol because it shouldn't have been enough reason to act the way I did so I'm going to take all the blame for it and apologize for it. I am truly sorry. I'd never do anything to hurt you. You know that."
Olivia exhaled weakly.
"I'm not the one that needs your apology Rafael."
"I already apologized to Felix. Trust me, we're in a good place right now. Olivia,"
He took another step to her, Olivia could feel a chill wind pass through her spine as he even got closer.
"I was wrong to let you go." He said looking into her eyes. I was wrong to turn by back on you and not take your side." He continued. "I want to make up for it. I want to be the man you fell in love with again. I want you and Grace back. I want my family back. I know you don't have to forgive me or take me back right away but I'm going to do all I can to make this right. To make things right." He slowly reached for her hands and then held on to them. Olivia didn't stop him. She lowered her gaze to their joined hands, her breathing normalizing as she felt his warm hands rub hers. Olivia let out a tiny breath.
"I am going to do all I can to earn your forgiveness and make myself a man worthy of your love and trust once again. I promised not to let you go and then I did when I let you walk out that door, but not again. Never again. You are my soulmate Olivia," Olivia looked into his eyes. She could see how they shone so bright like crystals. Even in all that darkness, she could almost see her reflection in his eyes from the tiny yellow light from the porch that brightened the compound just a little bit.
"I only just realized how much I need you, how much I'm close to nothing without you. You are my wife, my life, so please, don't turn your back on me anymore, don't stay so far away from me anymore. Don't push me away either. Stay by my side and help me. Help me become a good man, help me become a strong man, strong enough to go against my father. Give me strength. Don't let go of my hand because I'd never let go of yours no matter what. Never again."
Olivia shut her eyes for a minute and then inhaled sharply. She could feel her mouth become so heavy and her vision so blurry from all those tears that clouded her eyes. Her thoughts were crowded. Her mind too.
"I-" her voice shook just as Rafael narrowed his gaze to her hoping she said something, anything thing at all to him. He was hoping she accepted him back. Olivia rose her gaze to meet his. "I'm pregnant Rafael."
She summoned all the courage she could get just as she felt a heavy weight get off her chest. She looked right into Rafael's eyes and could see how concentrated they were into hers. She could see tears quickly well up in his eyes too as he looked down at her, he didn't need to say much but she could see how surprised he was. He just stood there, numb, not even saying anything. Olivia held her breath. She hoped he did. She wanted him to say something. Anything at all.
"I just found out." She continued, holding her breath. "Look, I know this is probably not the right time and you're not ready for the responsibilities that would come with it, I don't even know if I'm ready, but we have to make a choice. I can't lose another child. Not again. I can't bring another child to this world and watch it get taken from me again. No matter what your choice is, no matter if you stand up to your father or not, it won't change the fact that I am an enemy of your family and my life is going to be on the line the moment he finds out I have those tapes and that means Grace's life would be on the line and this baby's life too, because he is going to find out Rafael. I can't sit back and watch your father ruin any more lives. I can't sit back and watch an innocent man die for nothing, I can't let my parents' death be for nothing, Ann's death, all the things I went through, the sufferings I've gone through all my life, I can't turn a blind eye to it. Whose life is going to be ruined next? Who has to die next? Me? Grace? Amy?" She stared into his eyes.
"I'm not asking you to turn your back on your parents for me Rafael. That's selfish. But like you said, my life is worth nothing to people like your father. No matter what I do, no matter what choice I make, there's no guarantee that he's not going to try to come after me and hurt me, finish what he started because I am a threat to him. And I won't go down for nothing. I won't go down alone. I won't let him kill any one else I care about. I'm so confused." A drop of tear fell from her eyes.
"I'm so confused and I'm scared my head is going to explode. There's no amount of tears that can even explain how I feel right now, heck I'm getting really tired of crying all the damn time."
Another tear dropped from her face and then another.
"So tell me, what would you have me do about any of this? About this baby because I'm scared. I'm so scared that I might actually have a heart attack right now, that I might actually die any minute." She sniffed and then cleaned her eyes quickly. God why did she always have so much tears pouring from her glands all the time.
"This is so exhausting." She sniffed. Why wasn't he saying anything? The silence was deafening. Olivia couldn't even bring herself to look at him anymore. She felt so embarrassed. Did the news scare him too? Did it scare him just as much? Did he hate the idea of bringing another child into the world? Was he not ready to be a father yet? All those thoughts kept crowding Olivia's head.
She watched Rafael take a final step towards her, pulling his hands up her arms, his eyes still glued to hers. Olivia held her breath as he pushed her closer to him gently and then placed her head on his chest, hugging her tightly. Olivia could hear his heart beat. It was perfectly normal. It wasn't beating as fast as hers were. It wasn't slow either. Why? Didn't he hear all the things she had just said? Olivia gulped hard, she could feel her entire body go numb. She couldn't even hold him back. She could feel him breathe into her hair, burying his face into her hair.
"I love you." He told her.
She could feel more tear drops fall from her face and on his grey woolen shirt. She could barely hold it in anymore. She was crying so hard already. She felt him place a soft kiss on her head not daring to let her go. Olivia held her breath and then buried her face into his chest. "I love you so much."
His words still echoing in her head over and over again.
I love you.
