Chapter 54
"Here."
Olivia raised her head to the glass cup filled with water stretched out in front of her. She let herself smile a little bit as she took it.
Rafael pulled the chair right beside her and turned it around so he could sit close to her, looking at her for a moment. Olivia wrapped her hand around the warm glass, three hours since the party had ended and everyone had walked away after the outburst. The hall was empty now, she had only really stopped crying and was beginning to sober up from all that alcohol. What a hell of a party.
Her head was beginning to feel really light.
"How are you feeling?" Rafael had to ask. He was really worried about her especially since she was the one that was mostly affected by the news. He knew just how much Austin meant to her and how much she trusted him, It must have hurt her so much to know how he ruined her life.
"Like a fool." She said slowly raising her head to meet his with a tiny smile on her face. Rafael let out an exhale. "I just can't believe how stupid I've been all along. All these years, I let him into my heart, into my life." She held her breath. "Into my daughter's life."
"You can't blame yourself, you couldn't have possibly known, no one did."
"But you knew." She looked into his eyes "You've always known, that's why you didn't want me close to him."
"No, that was Victoria. I only had my suspicions and after I saw him get so angry at the hospital the other day, I just had to consider the possibilities of his involvement plus with his DNA matching the results of the autopsy," Rafael clicked his tongue. There was no need to go on. "Anyway, it's all over now, you don't have to be sad or upset, everyone knows the truth, by morning the world's going to know you're innocent, they'd know you didn't do it, now you don't have to let anyone treat you like crap anymore."
And it was all because of him.
Olivia just wanted to let him know so badly. She wanted to let him know how much his hard work played an important role in her freedom, how much he had played in her freedom without even expecting anything in return. Even when he didn't have to. She wanted this man to know how important he was beginning to become to her.
How much he was starting to mean to her, how much her heart skipped beats when he was close to her, touching or holding her hands even when he didn't want to. Every single second she spent with him, how unexpectedly happy She was.
You have to tell him,
Amy's words kept ringing in her head, this was ridiculous, just what was she thinking after the crazy night she had?
She scoffed softly and looked back at her glass.
Come on Olivia, really? don't embarrass yourself anymore, now wasn't the right time.
She took a quick drink.
"You must be tired, you should go home and get some rest." Rafael continued. "Come on, I'd take you." He gently gave her thigh a gentle tap and got up quickly. He turned away.
Olivia bit her lower lip hard.
"Wait!" She said jumping to her feet.
Rafael halted for a minute and slowly turned to her, wondering what was wrong. He narrowed his gaze on her just as she slowly dropped her glass on the table, and then turned back to him.
Two seconds.
"I uh-there's something I have to say. It was what I was trying to say in the ladies' room before I got cut off."
Rafael didn't understand but he wanted to know what it was. He turned fully so he could look at her while she spoke. Olivia let out a nervous chuckle, she was really nervous.
"What is it?" He asked her noticing how tensed she was all of a sudden. She watched Rafael pull his sleeves above his wrist with one pull, one after the other, his eyes and attention focused on her.
Olivia tapped her feet nervously.
What on earth are you doing Olivia?
She could hear the tiny voice in her head tell her just as Rafael took a step to her to see if she was truly okay. She puffed air into her cheeks then took a deep breath, she let it out. She shut her eyes as Rafael took a step to her.
"I think I'm in love with you." Olivia blurted out immediately. Rafael froze.
He was still and became as cold as ice for about a second or two. Olivia opened her eyes one after the other to peek at him. He wasn't moving, he didn't say a word, he just stood there, frozen. She shook her head quickly.
"I don't think it, I know it." She tried to correct herself. "I have feelings for you Rafael, feelings I can't really explain and I don't know what to do with them."
A huge frown suddenly appeared on his face while he still kept his eyes on her. He didn't look surprised at all, he just looked- angry.
He was angry?
Did he know? Had he always known? Why else did he look upset then?
"At first," Olivia wasn't going to get discouraged or scared. She had started already, she knew she had to get through with it "At first, I thought it was just gratitude, that I was just developing these feelings because I was extremely grateful to you for everything you've done for me but then I realized it was more than that. I realized I was slowly getting attached to you, I get worried when you don't call me and I get worried when you don't pick up when I call you, and that time you didn't get back and we couldn't reach you for days, I thought I was going to die of a heart attack if something bad had happened to you. It is it isn't it? It has to be it, the feeling you get when you can't breathe when someone isn't close to you, how your heart jumps with excitement when he holds your hand."
Olivia paused for a second.
Why wasn't he saying anything? Why did he just stand there looking at her like that? Was he disappointed? Disgusted? Irritated? Not even a scoff or a wink? Rafael just stood there like a statue, his frown worsening as tiny echoes of what Susan said at the hotel were beginning to replay in his head.
Olivia scoffed quietly and then raised her head, she had to at least pretend it was okay if she was the only one confessing her feelings.
"What is wrong with me?" She said almost in a whisper, loud enough for him to hear. "I swear I'm not drunk. Why am I being like this?"
She lowered her head.
Maybe she needed to stop there, if she was beginning to annoy him again then she just needed to stop herself before it got worse.
"You know what?" She asked him as he began to take a few quick steps to her. "You don't have to bother about anything I said at all and I'm not going to force you to accept my feelings or anything of that sort," Olivia could feel her breath cutting short the moment he came in front of her. She couldn't even look at him without noticing his cold glare.
"What I think is." She said in a whisper "I-think,"
Rafael grabbed her hand with a hard jerk that frightened Olivia, taking one final look at her. Olivia's eyes shone so hard in surprise the moment he turned and began to storm towards the door, pulling her behind him.
They were out of the building now and headed to the car park, Rafael increasing his speed and grip on her.
"Rafael Stop." She told him the moment they got to the car garage, still trying to control her speed. He pulled her to the car, what was wrong with him? Why was he being so weird? Pulling her like that, not even giving her a chance to pull her dress up so she didn't fall. She could hear loud rumbles in the sky as they got closer to the door at the front passenger's seat. The sky was changing , it was cloudy like it was about to rain. He opened it.
"Stop It." She told him. "You're hurting me!"
Rafael dropped her hand with a force so hard that she thought it was going to fall off.
He turned to her.
"What is wrong with you?" She asked him, rubbing her wrist gently, they were becoming sore with all that pressure.
"Get in." He told her.
Olivia blinked twice, her eyes staring into his.
"What is wrong with you? Why are you being like this?" She asked him, her voice trembling. She was scared, scared of him and what he might do to her. Rafael didn't say a word. He just kept looking at her. Olivia stood straight and exhaled. "If what I said bothers you so much then you can just forget about it. You don't have to do any of this to prove your point."
"Didn't you hear me?"
"I'm not going anywhere with you if you'd keep acting like this. You can go home." Olivia frowned "I'd just go back to the hospital with Tony."
She turned to go away when Rafael grabbed her arm, pulled her back to the car and gently pushed her into it before she could say anything else.
He shut the door quickly before Olivia could even turn and hurried to the driver's side.
"Sir," The driver rushed to him with the keys. "Are you ready to-"
Rafael grabbed the keys from his hands and got into the car, he shut the door quickly.
"What is wrong with you?" Olivia asked him again "Don't you think you're too old to be acting like this?"
Rafael started the engine.
"Put your seatbelt on." He warned her, his eyes on the windshield.
"Rafael." Olivia glared at him but he wouldn't say it twice. He stepped on the accelerator, now she knew she had to put her seatbelt on, it wasn't a joke, he was serious. Olivia hurriedly fixed her seatbelt on.
The car sped off.
