Chapter 15
Six months later.
Olivia drew in consecutive deep breaths as tears rolled down her eyes. She was in a lot of pain.
It had been two long hours and it hurt so much. The contractions were getting stronger with every moment that passed. Everything was in slow motion.
"Mrs. Silver." One of the midwives called her attention. She turned to face her slowly as tears blurred her vision. "Mrs. Silver, we can't do this without you. We need you and the baby to survive but we can't help you do that without your cooperation." She said softly, urging Olivia to listen. Olivia shook her head as teardrops rolled down the side of her face.
She couldn't. She could accept the pain, she could take all of it if it meant she would get to be with her baby because she knew, she knew that those were Victoria's midwives. She knew that the moment the baby was delivered, they would take her away from her. She knew that Victoria would do everything in her power to keep her child away from her and if that happened, she wouldn't be able to take it. If that happened, she would have nothing to live for.
She let out a whimper when she felt a sharp pain move from her lower back to her abdomen.
"Mrs. Silver." The midwife continued, her voice pleading now. "Mrs. Silver, please listen to me. You're putting your life and the life of your baby in danger by doing this." She continued. Olivia sniffed and turned away, her breathing ragged.
When was it going to end? When would she finally be free?
"Mrs Silver, please push." The midwife was saying when someone else walked into the room. Olivia glanced at the approaching figure, her fingers trembling and her vision blurred by the amount of tears she was letting out.
Her entire body was trembling as a matter of fact. She could feel beads of sweat, mixing with her tears as it trailed down her face.
"Mrs Silver." Kemi called as she stopped beside Olivia's bed. Olivia turned to her weakly.
Why was she even there?
They weren't exactly friends. Sure, they'd talked a few times in the last six months and Kemi had helped her out a few times but they weren't friends but if she had to be honest, the police woman was the only person she trusted the most at that point.
"Mrs Silver." Kemi stopped beside her and reached for her hand. Olivia watched her warily, she knew exactly what was coming next. She knew exactly why Kemi was there.
"Don't " She started weakly.
"You have to." Kemi said to her.
"They will t-take her away from me." She winced.
"You have to." Kemi gave her hand a firm squeeze. "If you don't, she's probably going to die and you would to. Do you want that? To kill your own baby?"
"Of course not." She sobbed.
"Good. You have to get her out. Do it for her." She added. Olivia choked back a sob as she turned away. She knew the warden was right. "Be strong for her." Kemi continued. "Can you do that?"
Olivia was quiet for a few seconds. The warden was right, resisting was only putting her in danger and her child even more. In as much as she didn't want anyone to take her child from her, she knew the last thing she wanted was to be the one to hurt her own child. She let out a shaky breath.
"Can you do that?" Kemi asked again.
Olivia exhaled and then bit her lower lip. She nodded before she sniffed.
"Okay." Kemi let out a sigh of relief. She didn't know Olivia that well and she had no idea why she was so drawn to her, but for some reason, she wanted Olivia to survive. She wanted Olivia to be okay in the end. "Okay." She breathed as the midwife moved closer.
"Mrs Silver, I'm going to need you to push. Can you do that?" She asked.
Olivia winced, clutching on tightly to Kemi's hand as she experienced another contraction. She groaned and then nodded.
"Okay at the count of three I need you to push as hard as you can alright."
Olivia puffed air into her mouth. Giving birth in prison wasn't exactly how she ever thought her life would have turned out.
"Mmmnnnnnnnn!" She moaned as loud as she could as clenched on to the bed sheets, pushing as hard as she could. "Mnnnnnnnn!" She held on tighter.
"That's it, thats it," she heard the midwives say "keep going, you're doing it." They encouraged her.
She tried to catch her breath but she felt like she was running out of time.
She pushed again and then again. Each time harder than the previous.
She wasn't sure she could anymore
"I can't." She whispered falling back in the bed.
"Yes you can Olivia." Kemi's voice brought her gaze right back to her. "You have to." Kemi frowned hard, a tone of determination and encouragement in her voice. "You're going to kill your baby if you don't. Isn't she what you've been hoping for? Fighting for? Isn't she the reason why you've not given up yet? Do this for her."
Olivia wasn't sure she wanted to go on anymore but she knew kemi was right. She had come all that way, just for this moment. This was her baby, the person she loved more than her own life.
Olivia took deep breaths. She had to go again. She pushed harder, putting all her strength and energy this time
"Good, good." She could sense excitement in one of the midwives voice. "I see a head, just one more."
Olivia took heavy breaths. The next one had better be the last. She was slowly feeling all her energy leave her.
She pushed harder and at that moment, she felt a sudden relief, and there it was, a cry.
A baby's cry. Her baby.
That was all she had been waiting for, that was all she needed before her eyes forced themselves close. She fainted.

Three hours later...
Olivia moaned as she opened her eyes slowly. She was so weak...so tired. Every inch of her body hurt when she tried to move. She drew in a deep breath and then looked around, taking in the details of her environment.
She glanced around the almost empty medium sized room saved for the bed space and the small bedside table. She placed her hand over her stomach and tried to move the other one.
Crap.
It was handcuffed to the bed. Had she almost forgotten she was still a prisoner? She groaned just as the female warden entered the room. She was still dressed in her uniform but something about her seemed warmer, seemed off.
"Olivia?" She called Olivia's name as she walked to the bed. "How are you feeling?"
"M-my Baby." She muttered weakly, her voice cracking as she spoke. "How is she?"
She noticed Kemi's lips tilt up slightly as she took slow, steady steps towards her.
"She's very beautiful. She looks a lot like you." Kemi stopped beside the bed. At this point, she was going to say anything to start off on a good note before she dropped the bomb. She was smiling but Olivia could see sadness in her eyes.
She heaved out a sigh of relief.
"Can I hold her?." She breathed. "Where is she?" She placed her hand over her chest. She noticed Kemi's face fall as she opened her mouth to say something and then shut it back.
"Kemi-"Olivia called weakly. "Where is she?" She asked again, this time with a more serious tone. Kemi sighed and reached for her hand and all Olivia could feel in that moment was dread. She bit on her lower lip and sniffed. She could feel the tears gathering in her eyes already.
"Just tell me where my baby is." She turned away, feeling a drop of tear roll down the side of her face.
"J-Just let me hold her." Kemi could see just how worn out she was.
Kemi watched her for a few seconds.
She opened her mouth to say something once more but swallowed her words again. How could she tell her that her baby was not there? How could she tell her that her daughter was gone?
She drew in a deep breath and then pursed her lip.
"Just let me see her." Olivia repeated, the tears in her eyes evident now. "I-I won't touch her if you don't want me to. Just let me see that she's okay." She knew she wasn't making any sense but she was desperate now.
"Mrs. Victoria came over-" Kemi started. "I-I don't know but somehow, we were asked to give her the child. She's to become your daughter's guardian-"
"They took her?" Her voice broke. "Th-they can't. She's my baby." She felt a drop of tear roll down her cheek. "M-my aunt, my aunt was supposed to- how?How could they not let me see her even once? H-how could they not let me hold her even once?" She grabbed a fistful of her hospital dress. Her heart was racing hard against her chest. "Sh-She needs me." She stammered. Breathing was becoming seemingly impossible and she felt as though the walls were closing in on her. Her vision blurred as she tried to sit up.
"Mrs Silver-" Kemi held her back.
"I can't— why did you let them take her?" She glared at the officer, still struggling to be past her confusion. "Why did you give her to them?"
"I-I didn't-"
"She's all I have. They've taken everything from me."
Olivia struggled with the lady as she swallowed hard trying to breathe. She was so scared, so terrified. She felt like she was losing control. She felt a sharp pain in her chest as the air around her thinned.
"Olivia, you need to calm down and breathe."
She could see Kemi's mouth moving but she couldn't hear anything.
"Breathe Olivia."
"T-they t-took everything." She managed to say just before everything blacked out.
