CHAPTER 52
Jungkook
Jungkook was sitting at his desk in his office, typing on his laptop.
"Knock knock" Hoseok peaked in " may I come in?".
"mhm" Jungkook hummed while working on something on his laptop.
"Do you want to come with us to have lunch?" Hoseok approached Jungkook's desk.
"I'm busy" Jungkook cut him off with his eyes still glued on the screen.
"Doing what?" Hoseok raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms, knowing very well what Jungkook was up to.
Jungkook didn't respond, he kept working.
"Kook" Hoseok sighed, coming to sit near him "Don't you think that maybe she doesn't want to be found?".
Seeing that Jungkook didn't want to engage in that conversation again, he kept going "It's been over a year...let her go" Hoseok's eyes softened while thinking about the pain that Jungkook must've been in for so long.
A year and a half had passed since you left South Korea. Since you lost the baby. Hoseok remembered it well, that day when everything changed; it hasn't been the same for you, Jungkook or Taehyung ever since. No one had heard from you after you left. Not even Jisoo. You just disappeared; leaving your life in Souh Korea behind. Leaving your friends behind. Leaving Jungkook behind.
"Jungkookie" Hoseok placed his hand on Jungkook's shoulder "Come with us, lets eat".
"I'm not done here yet" Jungkook's pupils kept darting left and right as he read the documents the private investigator he had contacted a couple of weeks prior had sent him. Some papers to sign before hiring him. Hoseok shook his head and glanced at the screen.
"A private investigator?!" his head snapped at Jungkook " Jungkook you have to stop doing this. This has gone too far."
But Jungkook didn't answer. He didn't care for Hoseok's mumbling, it was always the same shit about him going insane and he was over it.
He wasn't insane. Although he was going down the path of it.
"Jungkook" Hoseok called for him "Jungkook, this...this is insane. You have to stop man, you're driving yourself mad".
He watched Jungkook ignore him, not giving him the answer he wanted. So, sighing, he decided to indulge him. Whatever gets him to talk is a win these days.
"Fine. You win. Did you find out something new?" Hoseok looked at the screen.
"No" Jungkook scoffed, pushing away his laptop annoyed. He rubbed his face with his hands and sighed.
"No. I can't find her" Jungkook pushed the inner part of the check with his tongue "There's no trace of her online. I can't call her parents 'cause they don't know I exist" he cocked his head, displeased "If even they know where she is. Hiring this guy is my only chance of finding her" he sighed, standing up.
He approached the window. It was unusually cold for that time of the year. Jungkook observed the rain pour down the city of Seoul.
"Maybe its for the best" Hoseok approached him "Maybe its how it's supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, I miss her a lot, I really do but we need to consider what's best for her right now..." Hoseok hesitated " and I think that in order for her to heal she needs to start over. To forget everything that happened here. And you do to. You need to...move on. Taehyung needs to move on too".
"You don't know what you're talking about" Jungkook dismissed him.
"Maybe. But at least do me a favor and think about it. And don't do stupid shit like hiring a private investigator" he patted him on the shoulder before walking away "If you change your mind we will be downstairs, having something to eat".
Jungkook spent his days like that; when he wasn't busy working, he would use his time searching for you. In the last year he travelled across Europe in the hopes of finding you. He grew so desperate he wanted to hire a private investigator to search for you. He tought that he was loosing his mind. You were all that he would think about.
That day when you lost your baby, Jungkook felt like dying.
He felt guilty, almost like he was the reason that that happened. He blamed himself for coming back to Seoul, for putting you through so much stress, for singing that song again. He should've never come back. He should've stayed in Busan, away from you. If it wasn't for his stupidity, for his weak self wanting to see you once again before finally disappearing from your life, nothing would've happened.
When that happened- when you lost your baby- Jungkook's only wish was to be with you; to comfort you, take care of you, to lessen your pain. But when you lost your baby it took you weeks to phisically recover. And once when you were finally able to stand on your two feet you left the country without even saying goodbye.
Jungkook couldn't even imagine what went trough your head; to wake up in the hospital, finding out that you had to give birth to a child whose heart stopped beating and to go through a recovery that usually mothers go through after going into labor. He felt bad for Taehyung as well; loosing the child completely wrecked him.
Jungkook and Taehyung didn't talk about it though. They never spoke about you or the baby. They mostly kept things formal; if they would talk it would usually be about business. Occasionally, the seven of them would reunite but it wasn't like before. Nothing was like before.
Jungkook kept being friends with Hoseok, Namjoon and Yoongi. If one could call that a friendship. Jungkook was so obsessed with the idea of finding you that it took a toll on every other aspect of his life. Jin kept his distance with Jungkook and bonded even more with Taehyung after the accident; Jin felt for Taehyung for loosing his son. Now that Jin was a father, to loose a child was unimaginable to him. Jin wouldn't even dare to think about what Taehyung was going through. Jimin, naturally, never left Taehyung's side. He wouldn't even look at Jugnkook, let alone speak to him. Namjoon, Yoongi and Hoseok managed in between Taehyung and Jungkook. They tried to be there for the both of them but they made that difficult for them; Taehyung never recovered from the loss of his son. He almost always kept to himself, drowning his being in insignificant and futile pleasures of life. He started drinking and partying once anger replaced the initial sorrow and misery.
As for Jisoo, she felt sad that you left without saying goodbye. She was angry at you for leaving like that, almost like you betrayed her, almost like you didn't trust her enough to open up to her.
Jungkook didn't believe her at first; he thought she was lying, that she knew where you were and wouldn't tell him. He couldn't accept the fact that you would just leave like that. After everything you've been through together.
It was selfish, he knew that but couldn't help it. He knew why you left, of course, but he couldn't believe that you would leave him.
He rubbed and stretched his neck exhausted before sitting back down at his desk, resuming work.
Jungkook was so consumed by work that he didn't even notice the time. It was only when it got dark outside that he finally glanced at his watch, realizing that he had stayed in late once again. His phone began to ring, catching his attention.
"Yeah?" he answered it.
"Where are you? Are you still at work?" Hoseok's voice echoed through the phone.
"Yes".
"All right, that's it. I'm picking you up and we're going out for drinks".
"I'm not in the mood, Hoseok" Jungkook pinched the root of his nose.
"Its non-negotiable" Hoseok was quick to respond " I'll pick you up in thirty and we'll meet Yoongi and Jisoo for drinks".
"I told you that I'm not interested" Jungkook tried to convince the friend but he wasn't having it.
"And I told you that its non-negotiable" Hoseok persisted "Listen, you've been moping around for quite a while. And- I can't believe that I'm about to say this to you of all people- but you need to live a little. So I'm picking you up in thirty and we'll go out in a bar for drinks. See you" Hoseok hung up.
Jungkook rolled his eyes but waited for Hoseok eitherway. The quicker he gets him off his back, the faster he gets to focus on you again.
To the shock of no one, Hoseok was quick to arrive.
"I'm doing this only to shut you up" Jungkook said as he entered Hoseok's car.
"Whatever you say, Kook" Hoseok drove off with a smile on his lips.
The bar was one of those old, irish-style pubs with old wooden floors and dark furniture. Full with people, everyone was busy chatting and drinking beer among themselves as a thick clous of smoke engulfed them all.
Once inside, Hoseok and Jungkook met Jisoo and Yoongi.
"This feels like an intervention" Jungkook said as he sat down.
"That's because it is" Yoongi sipped his beer.
"You need to stop searching for her, Kook" Jisoo reached for Jungkook's hand acoss the table "Its time for you to let go".
"No" Jungkook retracted his hand "Hoseok-" he turned to his friend "If this is going to be like this then I'm leaving".
"Okay, okay" Hoseok gestured "Lets just table this conversation for another day, hm?" he glanced at his friends " I'd say it's a enough of a win that we were able to drag you out of your office for a start".
"Yeah, we figured you'd need to get distracted from your recent...activities" Yoongi said.
"Yes!" Hoseok slapped Jungkook's upper arm "We thought it's time for you to have some fun so...cheers" he lifted Yoongi's drink making Jungkook chuckle.
"Okay, one drink then I'm gone, okay?" Jungkook warned Hoseok.
"Whatever you say".
The four of them spent the night drinking the night away; it took lots and lots of drinks for Hoseok to convince Jungkook to join him on the dance floor. It was only when Yoongi got drunk enough to dance that Jungkook joined them, making Jisoo laugh her butt off.
It was the most fun Jungkook had in so long. Even before you left; he couldn't remember when he felt that carefree. Then, a memory of you and him laughing and joking around in his car after you've made love to one another popped up in his mind. He smiled; that was what happiness felt like.
"I'm always impressed by your moves, Kook" Jisoo said once Jungkook took a seat next to her, leaving Hoseok an Yoongi on the dance floor.
"Ah, its nothing much" Jungkook waved it off "I guess when you own a night club you learn a move or two".
"You look good. I like the change in style" Jisoo ruffled Jungkook's now short hair " You look younger".
"Thanks...I guess" Jungkook chuckled, backing away from her and runnin his fingers through his hair "I needed the change" he bit his lip, getting all of a sudden serious.
"How are you?" Jisoo's expression also got serious "You got us all concerned for you".
"Have I been that insufferable these past months?" Jungkook cocked his brow, a smile forming on his lips.
"A little" she admitted.
"You've been a literal pain in the ass" Yoongi slurred, coming to get his drink from the table and making Jisoo and Jungkook laugh as the watched him go back to the dance floor.
"It's nice to see you laughing for a change" Jisoo said.
"Yeah..." Jungkook said lost in thought.
"How are you...really?".
"Same old same old" Jungkook shrugged his shoulders " Listen, I appreciate the effort tonight but I won't stop searching for her until I find her".
"Jungkook...".
"I've made up my decision" Jungkook interrupted her "How are you...coping with it all? Still angry at her for not getting in touch with you?".
"Jungkook..." Jisoo's expression changed " I wanted to tell you this for quite some time but I didn't know how..." she stopped, catching his attention. Jungkook's whole body got stiff, waiting for her to continue.
"Y/n contacted me a couple of months ago. We talk regularly now".
Jungkook blinked a couple of times. It took a good amount of time for the information to reach his brain.
"What do you mean?" Jungkook asked.
"We've been in touch for quite some time but she begged me not to tell anything to anyone. She would kill me if she found out that I'm telling you this" Jisoo's eyes pleaded Jungkook for forgivness. She knew that that information would completely wreck him.
"So you're telling me now that you kept in touch with her? That everytime that I asked you if you knew something...anything about her, how she was, you've been lying to me?" Jungkook's tone was a mixture of incredulity and anger. He felt played by Jisoo. By the only person who he thought understood him.
"I'm sorry".
"You didn't think that that wasn't something worth mentioning to me? You didn't think that you should've said anything after the state that I was in? You watched me loose my goddamn mind over this and you didn't say anything?!" Jungkook's eyes narrowed "How could you?".
"I'm so sorry. I know how much this must hurt but-".
"You have no idea" Jungkook cut her off.
"But she begged me not to say anything. She doesn't want anything to do with her previous live here in Seoul. She moved on. We don't even talk about it. She asked me not to bring it up ever again. I couldn't do that to her, not after everything that she'd been through" Jisoo explained.
"Where is she?".
"You know that I can't tell you that" Jisoo begged him to stop asking.
"Jisoo" Jungkook insisted "I need to know where is she. Please".
"No" Jisoo shook her head.
"Goddam it Jisoo!" Jungkook slammed the table "Tell me where she is now or I swer I'll-".
"You will, what?" Jisoo interupped him "Are you going to threathen me now?"
"Jisoo..." Jungkook ran his fingers through his hair "I'm sorry. I just need to tell me where she is. I just..." he paused, thinking about what he should say next "I need to see her again. Just once. I need to talk to her, make sure that she's okay. Otherwhise I wont be able to move on" Jungkook was looking directly into Jisoo's eyes, imploring her with his gaze "Please. I need this. Help me. Just this once".
Jisoo felt sympathy for Jungkook, pity even. She had never seen him like that, broken inside. You've managed to completely turn him inside out and she asked herself if Jungkook would ever be the same. Would he ever return being the old Jungkook, before meeting you.
She sighed "London" she bit her lips still unsure about weather telling him was a good idea.
"She's in London. Give me your phone I'll type in the address" She took Jungkook's phone "But" she raised her index finger "you haven't heard it from me. And you promise me to leave this story behind once you come back".
"Done" Jungkook took back his phone, reading the address. Jisoo saw the spark in his eyes, like life itself began to run through his system once again.
"Thank you" he gave her a kiss on the forhead and ran out of the bar. He had a plane to catch.
Jungkook immediately arranged a flight to England, the moment he stepped outside the bar. He didn't even waste time packing. He only took his passport and grabbed a cab to the airport where his plane was waiting for him.
His heart was beating so fast since the moment Jisoo said that she's been talking to you. He thought that he wouldn't be able to calm down for the whole plane flight. And it was a long flight.
Fourteen hours, one stop in Dubai and a couple of time zones later, he was finally in London.
He took an Uber and upon typing your address he felt almost jittery. During the flight he kept thinking about all the things he would've said to you. There was soo much to say.
"Aish!" he scoffed when the Uber he was in got stuck in traffic. Damn London and its crowdy streets.
He nervously kept shaking his leg, looking around the city.
He searched for you in every face and every silhouette his eyes would land upon.
"Here. You can drop me off here. I'll walk from this point on. Thank you" Jungkook rushed out of the car when it got clear to him that he would arrive at the destination faster by foot.
Outside it was pouring but he didn't care. He kept walking towards you.
He thought his heart would jump out of his ribcage as he reached your building. He tried to enter but the door was locked. He rang each doorbell but there were no signs of you. As he thought about what he should do, an old lady exited that very building.
"Excuse me" Jungkook called for her attention "Do you know if someone by the name of Y/n lives here? A girl, about this tall, brown eyes and brown hair, a foregner...would 've only be living here for a couple of months?".
"Oh you must be talking about the pretty new girl that moved here recently" the old lady nodded, giving him a smile. Jungkook's face lit up when the lady mentioned you.
"Yes" he said enthusiastic "have you seen her?".
"I haven't seen her in days. I'm sorry" the lady shrugged her shoulders. "may I ask who are you?".
"Oh I'm...just a friend" Jungkook said.
The lady smiled " My dear boy, a friend doesn't show up unannounced, drenched in rain water, without breath at eight in the morning at someone's house" she smiled.
"yeah well..." Jungkook rubbed the back of his neck as his lips fought to hide a timid smile from her.
"I think she left for work. She should be back this evening" the lady reassured him.
"Thank you" Jungkook cordially said before sinking deeper into his light jacket, crossing his arms to cover from the cold.
"Why didn't you dress better? It's freezing outside" she touched the fabric of his jacket.
"Yeah well where I come from its pretty warm, didn't think about the lovely spring weather here in England" he justified himself, feeling his cheeks become redder by the second.
The lady looked at him confused "Where did you come from?".
"Seoul, South Korea".
"I'm sorry?" the lady was visibly confused.
"I flew yesterday ...or was it today... I don't know" he shook his head " Took a plane straight to here. Well, not straight to here. Had to make a stop in Dubai".
The lady eyed him down, doubting his words.
"You...flew from Korea to England? And you didn't bring anything with you?".
Jungkook shook his head.
The lady's lips curved upwards " A friend doesn't do that either".
Jungkook smiled at her.
"I wish you best of luck my boy. Here" she offered him her umbrella " If you're going to wait you'll need this more than me".
"Oh no" Jungkook shook his hands "I couldn't possibly accept that, please. You need it. I'll just wait over here. Its fine, really" Jungkook took shelter under the building's huge door.
"Okay, well...Good luck" she said before going on her way.
Jungkook sat at the doorsteps, waiting for you to come back. As hours and hours passed, he persisted. He questioned if maybe you weren't going to come back to your home that day but either way he would've waited.
"You're still here?" the lady came back.
"Yes" Jungkook was shivering from the cold. It never, not even once stopped raining that day. Jungkook came to hate the rain and with it London as well.
He sneezed, shrinking even more on himself.
"You'll catch a cold. Come inside, I'll make you a cup of tea and we can wait for her together" the lady offered.
"No, it's fine. Thank you".
"No no, I insist. You need to get up from the stairs and come inside".
"It's fine really. I'll just wait for her here" Jungkook tried to decline the lady's offer.
"And if she doesn't come home today? What are you going to do? Wait here on my doorsteps for days? Come" she urged him.
"I wouldn't want to impose" Jungkook said.
"Nonsense. I'll make us some tea and you can warm yourself a little bit" she gave him a good look "maybe even dry yourself" she said making Jungkook chuckle. He had to admit that waiting inside sounded like a good idea.
"Okay" he got up.
"Come" she grabbed him by his upper arm " my my how tall you are" she said, inviting him in.
Jungkook spent an hour or so in this lady's company. He thought that she was incredibly nice to offer him to wait at her house.
"Do you want another cup of tea?" the lady offered, pouring herself another one.
"No. Thank you" Jungkook was trying to stay warm, covering himself with a heavy blanked that the lady brought just for him.
"You don't look so good" she admitted "I think you might've caught a cold outside, maybe even pneumonia" she said, making him chuckle.
"I'll be better once this day ends" Jungkook said.
The lady nodded. "I'll go and check if she's home, in the meantime you try to stay warm".
"Thank you. For everything" Jungkook was truly grateful but the lady just waved him off as per sy it wasn't a big deal.
She exited her apartment and was about to go to your place when she stumbled upon you on the stairs.
"Hi Mrs. Baker, how are you today?" you gave her one of your radiant smiles while you fished for your keys in your bag, holding onto your grocery bags as well.
"Oh dear I've been looking for you, would you mind accompany me to my flat? there's something that you need to see".
"The cable has been acting out again?" you joked as you walked with her to her place.
"No" she smiled "but it is something that only you can fix" she opened the door wide open to reveal Jungkook sitting inside.
Your questioning eyes shifted from her to the sight in front of you. When your eyes locked with Jungkook's you felt your whole body go numb, dropping the grocery bags on the floor.
Upon seeing you, Jungkook felt his heart drop.
"Y/n" hearing him say your name made your breath stop mid-throat.
Jungkook stood up, unsure what to do next.
"Jungkook..." his name left your lips in a breath. " I don't understand" you glanced at Mrs. Baker standing next to you "What are you doing here?" you looked at Jungkook again.
He was standing there, more stunning than ever. His clothes were soaked and his hair damp. His eyes were puffy and his cheeks pink. You didn't know if it was a dream or reality.
"I wanted to see you" Jungkook cautiously approached you.
"He was waiting for you on the doorsteps since this morning. Flew from Korea to see you. I simply couldn't let him wait for you outside, not in this weather" Mrs. Baker explained.
"I don't know what to say" you felt your head pounding.
"Right. I'll leave you two to it. I have to run some errands anyway" she closed the door, leaving you two alone.
