Chapter 1

It felt so good to breath in the salty Ocean air after what seemed like an eternity of school. The sound of the Ocean in the distance made me feel like it was calling my name, to just swim away, but no. I was stuck waiting until all the family activities for the day were done, AND THEN I would go for the long awaited swim.

"Iris if you dont hurry up were going to be late to go shell hunting, again," my little brother Tyde called from the cabin porch.

I loved this little cabin. It was the same cabin the family vacationed to every summer. I looked at the sides of the worn cabin, the sky blue paint had a few more cracks in it than last summer, the porch and wood work around the windows needed to be restained, and the glass on the windows could use a thorough cleaning. I got up and brushed the sand of of my legs.

"Coming Tyde," I called back. I started heading up towards the cabin when I saw something shiny in the sand. I reached down I dug out a pretty silver shell necklace, it had turquoise gems, and when I turned it over on the back of the shell it looked like a whales tale coming out of the ocean. I pulled my hair over my shoulder and fastened the necklace on. For a second if felt like the shell was burning my throat but then it stopped. Huh, weird.

I dashed up the steps and into the cabin.

"Hey Iris," my dad said, "make sure to bring your swimsuit and swim bag with you, also your towel is in the dryer."

"Thanks dad, uh do you know where mom is?"

" Yeah she's out front packing the car up, were planning on doing a barbecue after we look for shells."

"Ok, thanks,"

I run through the kitchen and then the living room out the door and head behind our silver van.

"Hi mom."

"Hey Hun. Did dad tell you where your towel was?"

"Yea he said it was in the dryer."

"Yea, Tyde managed to impale his juice box and your towel was the only thing on hand to stop the eruption of the hi-c orange flavored volcanoe."

We both laughed. I loved my mom she had the most beautiful sea-green eyes and blond hair. I wish I had blond hair, but no, I have nasty almost bright red hair, luckily though I inherited my moms green eyes. And unlike the rest of my family I was deathly pale.

"Ok why don't you go grab your bag and the rest of our family." My mom told me.

  " Alrighty, sounds good!"

I ran back inside the cabin, whipping the door closed behind me. It slammed a little harder than I intended, the metal screen door made a louder groaning noise than usual. Huh, that was weird I didn't even put that much force into closing it.

I bounded up the steps to my cozy little room. I had the only room on the second floor. The walls were painted a soft yellow color which had faded over the years and there was a twin bed with a quilted bedspread in the corner right next to the closet.

I unzipped my duffle bag and grabbed my swimsuit and towel and shoved them into a smaller bag. I than turned and dashed down the steps grabbed my towel from the dryer and headed out to the car.

"Ready to go Iris?" My mom said starting the van.

"Yea," I said trying to put as much enthusiasm in my voice as possible.

"Let's goooo!" Tyde whined, "if we don't get there soon all the good shells will be gone!"

"Okay, we're going," dad replied with a chuckle.
