Everything was perfect. I had an amazing new boyfriend, my memory was coming back, and I was doing super well in the trials. I should really learn to stop thinking that.

After my race two days ago I'd learned that several competitors had left with broken limbs or a horrible disease. And more were leaving every day. Ava and I were sitting on my balcony watching two boys from the trials get into a cab to take them home. "Ava I'm scared," I said. "What if whoever's doing this goes after me?!" "I'm sure they won't Rowen." She didn't sound so sure. "Ava I'm one of the top competitors, notice that none of the people who haven't won a race or gotten a best time have been targeted." "Ok maybe you do have reason to worry," she conceded, "but just make sure you only drink water or stuff that has only been touched by you. Also be careful and make sure me or Sammy or Emma or Jackson or someone you trust is with you at all times." We heard a knock on my door. "That would be Jimmy," I said as I got up. "And why is he here?" Ava inquired. "Because the team wants to say hi to me and Kaylee (our other coach who was also Jimmy's girlfriend) wanted to say hi too." "Ok cool." She said as I let Jimmy in, followed by Sammy. "Ava!" I yelled, "I did nothing!" She yelled back entirely too quickly. I rolled my eyes, "sorry guys come on in." Jimmy chuckled and Sammy gave me a quick peck on the cheek. We sat down on the couch and Jimmy set up his laptop with Skype. He placed it on the coffee table as Ava came in. "Oh Sammy!" She exclaimed, "fancy seeing you here I had no idea you'd be coming." I took one of the throw pillows and used it for what throw pillows were meant to be used for. She dodged and sat down next to me. Kaylee picked up after two rings. They were sitting in a classroom at Edgewood, our high school back in Manhattan. I was hit by a pang of homesickness for my city skyscrapers and local pool. They waved and all shouted at the same time. Kaylee came in front of the screen, "hey Rowen, how ya doin?" I smiled at my coach, "pretty good, I'm sure you were watching me win my first two races." "We were and you should've heard the screams. I'm still a little hard of hearing in my left ear." There were snickers from my teammates behind her. "Anyways, we all think you did amazing and we have a little surprise for you." She moved out of the way and a large banner came out held up by Brennan, Kendall, and Ella. It was beautiful decorated, and they'd all signed it, it read, WE'RE ALL CHEERING FOR YOU! GOOD LUCK ROWEN! I had no words. "Aw thanks so much you guys I love it!" A voice in the back piped up, "yup and the whole schools gonna watch your next race and cheer you on!" James, his head came up in the camera as I shoved Sammy out of the camera. Ava wrapped her hand around his mouth as James came up to the camera. I was pretty sure Kaylee had been projecting from the computer to the smart board but now it was just in the computer. I could hear the regular classroom buzz pick up again. Jimmy asked me if he could leave for two seconds, I glared and shooed him away. "Hi James." I said. This was going to be the most awkward conversation of my life. James had the biggest crush on me.

How was I going to tell him I had a boyfriend. Who just so happened to also live in Manhattan. I glanced at Ava, but she wasn't looking at me, she was looking at James. Ava had a huge crush on James. Love triangle much? Anyways, there was no easy way to break this to him, he'd find out eventually. I opened my mouth to speak but Ava beat beat me to it. "Rowen has a boyfriend," I closed my eyes and slid out of view of the camera. This fun video visit to my friends back home had taken a dark turn. Sammy crawled around to the other side of the coffee table and motioned for me to follow. I held up one finger to signal for him to wait a second and I promptly hung up on James. Jimmy walked back in the room holding coffee and a doughnut. I glared at Jimmy as he picked up his laptop from the table. "So, how was your conversation with James?" "Out!" I yelled, he had the nerve to laugh as he left my hotel room. I flopped back down on the couch as soon as the door closed. Sammy and Ava sat down on either side of me. Ava was unusually subdued. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "It's alright," I sighed, "I know you just wanted to help, plus you have other ulterior motives." I smirked as her face reddened. Sammy spoke up, "do you have a boyfriend that I need to worry about?" "Ha ha you're so funny." I sighed. "No he just really liked me and I guess I kind of liked him, but then I met you and yeah." He laughed, "so I don't need to worry about this fellow?" "Maybe," I smirked and turned to Ava. "Hey maybe now he'll take an interest in you, because you know it's like when you can't get the girl you go after the best friend." She shoved me and smiled. "Maybe."
