Chapter 12: After the Auditions

Meena

The camera crew showed all the chosen ones for the contest.

"And you can see the lucky few leaving the theater behind me. Now back to you in the studio, John," Bob announced.

Meena's mother turned the TV off, trying to not make her daughter sadder than she already was.

"Oh, honey, please don't cry. You are not a failure. There'll be other chances. You just--" she tried to assure.

"Bah! To heck there will!" Meena's granddad interrupted.

"Dad, please," Meena's mom tried to make him stop.

"Come on! Don't you want this?" her granddad asked.

"Well, sure, but I messed it up," Meena answered sadly.

"Then you gotta go back there tomorrow and say, 'Mr. Moon, I demand you let me re-audition!' Be confident! Show 'em you ain't gonna be pushed around! You got that, Meena?" her grandpa asked.

"Um..." Meena answered uncertainly.

"Good! Now, go get my cocoa," her grandpa requested, grabbed some of the muffins they made, then left the kitchen.

Ash

Ash was cleaning up the apartment as Lance was randomly singing and playing his guitar about Ash wanting to go for the contest, making fun of her.

"Would you stop? I'd only be doing it for us," Ash told him.

"Oh, really?" Lance asked sarcastically.

"Yes, really. If I won that money, we could build our own recording studio, start our own label. I mean, the whole world would get to hear your songs," Ash explained.

"I'm not listening to my girlfriend 'cause she just wants to sell out," Lance sang, making Ash groan.

Mike

Mike was playing his saxophone on the street until he saw a female white mouse in a purple dress walk by. He walked beside her, playing his saxophone romantically. That is until she walked into a club and the gorilla, Mario, wouldn't let him in.

"Hey! Uh, just a min-- Oh, oh, wait. W-Wait!" Mike started.

The mouse looked back at him, smiled, then continued walking into the club, making Mike sigh dreamily.

"Oh, look at-- I know Derek, the manager. He'll vouch for me. Come on!" Mike tried to persuade Mario, but it didn't work.

"Hey, Mario. How's it going?" one of three bears greeted and the gorilla let them in.

"Oh, for crying out loud. Oh, yeah, oh, let the bears in. Let the bears in. Fine," Mike fussed then played at sour note at Mario.

Johnny

Johnny walked into the mechanics shop that he called home, happy he made it into the competition and that he gets to hang out with Jamie the next day. Then he found Big Daddy, Stan, and Barry surrounding a table.

"There he is! I got a surprise for you, my son," Big Daddy said proudly.

"What's that?" Johnny asked after he set his skateboard aside then walked to his dad.

"Tell him the plan," Big Daddy told the gorilla in the blue suit, Stan, as he put an arm around Johnny.

"Right. We've been told there's a ship carrying 25 million in gold, gonna dock at night right here. With the usual guards here and here. But, lucky for us, there's a sewer right under here. So the getaway driver meets us here," Stan explained.

"And that is gonna be you this time, Johnny," Big Daddy finished.

"What? You want-- You want me to drive?" Johnny asked.

"Yeah. It's time my boy had a proper role in the gang, eh?" Big Daddy stated.

"Hang on, hang on, Dad. Barry's always been our driver," Johnny pointed out.

"Barry don't mind. Do you, Barry?" Big Daddy asked Barry.

"No. No, that's fine," Barry answered.

"Yeah," Big Daddy responded.

"So-- So, when exactly is this ship coming in, then?" Johnny asked.

"We ain't got a date yet," Stan said.

"Probably won't be for a while, though, will it?" Johnny pointed out.

"What do you care? It's the last job we ever need to do. When it comes in, we go. Right?" Big Daddy asked.

"Great. Can't wait," Johnny replied, not really into it.

He grabbed his skateboard then texted Jamie.

Rosita and Jamie

Rosita waited outside the bathroom, getting her kids ready for bed while on the phone to get a nanny.

"Um, hi. I saw your ad in the paper. Yes, I need a nanny just for a couple of weeks because my usual sitter is joining me in a singing contest," Rosita explained.

A smile appeared on her face at the answer.

"You can? Great...Oh, the kids? Yes, they're wonderful. They...yeah, I have 25...No, I'm-- I'm not joking. Um, but they're really no problem--" Rosita continued.

Then the nanny hung up.

"Hello? Hello?" Rosita asked.

"Good night, Mommy," one of her piglets said.

Meanwhile, Jamie was in her room, just listening to music on her phone when she felt it buzz. She looked to see Johnny texted her.

(A/N Jo= Johnny; Ja= Jamie)

Jo: Hey.
Ja: Hey. What's up?
Jo: It's my dad.
Ja: You wanna talk about it?
Jo: It's just...my dad wants me to be in the family business and I don't want to.
Ja: Oh. Not fun.
Jo: Not at all.
Ja: I wish I could help, but I don't really know what that feels like.
Jo: What do you mean?
Ja: It's complicated.
Jo: Oh.
Ja: Yeah.
Jo: Well, do you think you could meet me?
Ja: Wanna do that date a little early? 😜
Jo: Haha. We can still do that tomorrow, but I just need someone to talk to.
Ja: Where should I meet you?
Jo: Do you know where the mechanics shop is?
Ja: Yeah. I know the place. I just got to help with Rosita's piglets and I'll be there in ten minutes.
Jo: Okay. See ya then.
Ja: You got it.

Jamie went to the piglet's bedroom and read them a bedtime story.

Meanwhile, Norman walked in, totally tired.

"Hey. How was the big meeting?" Rosita asked.

He moaned as he gave her his coat and briefcase.

"That bad, really? Well, I have something really exciting to tell you," she started to say.

"Mmm. You make the best pie, honey," Norman responded.

He went to sit down as Rosita put his stuff on the counter.

"Listen, Norman, I know it's short notice, but I could really use some help with the kids tomorrow because...well, you are not gonna believe what Jamie and I did today," Rosita explained.

She showed him the flyer, but didn't get a response.

"Norman, are you listening to me?" she asked.

He was snoring as a piece of the pie he had fell. Rosita sighed sadly as she looked at the flyer.

"Rehearsals begin first thing tomorrow morning, so get some sleep and dream big dreams," Buster's voice echoed in her head.

"Hmm," she hummed as she got an idea.

That's when she saw Jamie going down the stairs and toward the door.

"Jamie, where are you going?" she asked.

"One of my friends needs someone to talk to and I'm going," Jamie answered.

"Is it Johnny?" Rosita smirked.

Jamie hesitated then said, "Maybe."

Rosita chuckled then said, "Go. But when you get back, I need a recording of you reading a story to the kids."

"Okay?" Jamie answered uncertainly.

"I've got an idea since I couldn't get a nanny," Rosita explained.

"Gotcha. I'll be back later," Jamie waved as she left then Rosita got right to work.
