Chapter 36: Jumping Out the Window
They all got in and Buster explained what happened to him before they all packed up and he tried to wake up Miss Crawly.
"Miss Crawly," Buster called.
"Pew, pew. Pew," Miss Crawly mumbled.
"Miss Crawly, wake up," he tried again.
"Wha… Mm, what?" she exclaimed when she woke up.
"Wake up. We got to get out of here," Buster told her.
"Coast is clear. Let’s go," Johnny said, looking through the door.
"Come on, Miss Crawly. Come on," Meena urged.
"Come on. Come on," Jamie did the same.
"We’ll all feel better when we’re safe at home," Buster assured.
"You sure about that? ‘Cause I can tell you, running and hiding away is not all that it’s cracked up to be," Clay told them.
"Well, we don’t have a choice," Buster insisted.
"Yeah, well, all these years, I thought the same, but turns out there’s always a choice. Just never had the guts to make the right one. Know what I mean?" Clay replied.
Then they overheard Crystal on the TV and they went to see what he had to say.
"I shut down my show ’cause of a talentless little twerp called Buster Moon. Seriously, you should’ve seen this teeny, tiny loser. Oh, and his pathetic amateur friends. Let’s just say, whatever Podunk town they crawled out of, that’s where they belong, ’cause it sure ain’t this great city," Crystal explained, smirking into the camera.
Buster turned the TV off as the others looked sad by what Crystal said. But Jamie was more mad about it than sad. But the others started walking toward the door.
"No. I see, Clay’s right. What we’re trying to do here, it takes guts," Buster said quietly.
"It does. And we usually solve something like this the theatre way," Jamie pointed out.
"You're right too, Jamie," Buster nodded then said to the others, "Guys, wait. We-we cannot let that bully steal our hopes and dreams."
"No, no, no. We are way past singing and dancing now," Rosita replied.
"Look, I-I know this might sound crazy. If we got the theater back...Just for one night only," Buster started.
"Oh, come on. Seriously? It’s not like we can just sneak in there and put the show on behind Crystal’s back," Johnny stated.
"That is exactly what we’re gonna do," Buster remarked.
"And besides, it wouldn't be the first time. After the first theatre came down, we still wanted to put that show on. We performed behind Judith's back and we can do it behind Crystal's too," Jamie said.
"Yes!" Nooshy cheered, nudging Johnny.
Then the doorbell rang, making them gasp.
"Maybe it’s, like, room service?" Gunter suggested nervously.
But then knocking sounded and a guard yelled, "Open up or you’re dead, Moon!"
"Okay, it’s not room service," Gunter corrected.
"You and your dumb friends better not be hiding in there," the guard yelled.
"What are we gonna do?" Meena asked.
"Guys, we just got to be brave now," Buster told them.
"Are you saying we should fight these thugs?" Johnny asked.
"No, no. They’ll beat us to a pulp," Buster answered.
"Real reassuring," Jamie commented.
The knocking continued.
"We’re gonna put this show on whether Crystal likes it or not. But first, we’re gonna jump out that window," Buster replied, pointing to the window.
"What?" they all questioned in shock.
"I’m beginning to like this guy," Clay commented.
As the guards busted in, the gang then jumped out the window into the water below, letting the current take them away.
"Security. Yeah, we got ten suspects loose on the river ride. Repeat, ten suspects loose on the river ride," one of the guards informed.
"Hang on, everybody," Buster instructed.
They all cheered as they headed for a slide.
"Uh, this is pool security. I don’t see anyone here. Over," one pool security guard said.
"There!" another pointed out as the others split up and ran through the brush.
"They’re heading east through the back lot!" a third said.
"Go, go, go, go, go," Jamie said.
"Oh, I wish I didn’t have…" Gunter started, gasped, then finished, "such teeny, tiny legs!
They kept running until they made it back into the city.
Meanwhile, Crystal was finishing up at his interview.
"Thank you, Linda. Thank you. Thanks, everybody," he said as he waved to the crowd.
As he walked offstage, he returned to an angry expression. Then Jerry handed his phone.
"Well?" he asked.
"Uh, no sign of ’em, sir. We think they might have split town," a guard said.
Crystal got mad as the gang cut through alleys until they got back to the theatre and went in what looked like a closet. But when they got inside, they saw a lot of small monkeys.
"No one is supposed to be in here," one of them informed.
"Uh, who are you?" Buster asked.
"We’re the night cleaners," the same monkey answered.
"Oh, I see. Well, we don’t need any cleaning right now, but it’d be better if you didn’t leave, so…Mm, I don’t suppose any of you can tap-dance, huh?" Buster requested.
One cleared his throat and raised his hand.
"Huh. Well, let’s move it, folks," Buster told them and they got to work.
