Chapter 31: Talking More with Clay
Clay was hammering a sign in the ground as Buster continued trying to persuade him.
"Uh, honestly, th-this is gonna be the greatest show I have ever made," Buster told him.
The hammer then went right past him.
"Whoa!" Buster explained then continued, "And when you see the sets and the…"
"Turn on that tap for me," Clay requested.
"Tap? Uh, sure," Buster nodded, did so, then said, "So, anyway…"
Then Clay sprayed him into the water, making Clay laugh as Ash came out with two cups of tea.
"Oopsie-Daisy," Clay smirked.
"Moon, you okay?" Ash called.
"I’m okay!" Buster yelled from the other side of the small hill.
She then held out one of the cups to Clay, making him glare a bit.
"It’s tea. You drink it?" Ash asked as Clay took it.
Buster panted as he came back, soaking wet, then stated, "I promise, this is going to be the most wonderful…I mean, fantastic show ever."
"Did you put honey in this?" Clay asked after taking a sip.
"A-And the ending? Oh, boy. I mean, i-it’s gonna end with you and your song…" Buster continued, Clay growled at him, then Buster concluded, "You don’t want to do the show."
"Besides, lost my singing voice, so…" Clay shrugged.
"Your voice sounds fine to me," Ash pointed out.
Clay groaned and walked over to water some bushes.
"This…This is all because you lost your wife, isn’t it?" Ash asked sympathetically.
"Okay, porcupine. We’re not talking about my Ruby," Clay remarked, watering the plants.
"Look, I know she inspired so many of your songs…" she replied.
"All of my songs," he corrected.
"Right. I…I can’t imagine what it must be like to lose someone so special, but do you think this is what Ruby would’ve wanted for you? I mean, you out here on your own and never singing again?" Ash pointed out.
"No, y-you don’t understand. There’s…there’s no rock star living here anymore," Clay sighed.
"Clay, you just need to play again. Your songs will bring you back. You can. You can reconnect with…" she tried to persuade.
"No, I can’t! I haven’t even heard one of my songs in over 15 years. And for good reason," Clay said, dropped the hose, took a deep breath, then added before pouring out the tea and dropping the cup, "Ruby was everything. And I don’t like honey in my tea."
He then walked toward the house as Buster and Ash watched him sadly.
Buster sighed and replied, "He’s not gonna change his mind."
"He will. But you should go back," Ash said.
"Me? What about you?" he asked.
"I just need time with him. I can’t just leave him like this," she answered, picking up the cup.
