Chapter Nine.

"Avery, get up!" Someone's annoying voice was yelling in my ear. I groaned and shoved my head under my pillow to avoid hearing it anymore. But the voice only got louder and soon my pillow was ripped off of my head and tossed across the room, hitting the wall with a quiet thud. "Avery, your hunk of a boss is at the door. Now get your ass out of bed!" the voice I now recognize was Talia, and I shot right out of bed just now comprehending what she said.

"Cameron's here?!" I practically screeched in her face, before jumping out of bed and dashing down the hallway.

"Yeah, he's been at the door for a while now" Talia mumbled with a yawn before slowly wandering into the kitchen and making herself a cup of coffee. Looking at the clock beside my TV I saw it was almost eight thirty, and Cameron was probably banging on my door for half an hour by now. Last night after he asked me out I couldn't fall asleep for the life of me, and around two AM I gave up and chugged some nigh time cough medicine. I'm sure regretting that now.

I ripped open my front door, Cameron almost slamming his fist down into my face as he prepared to knock for probably the hundredth time. "Cameron, I'm so sorry!" I cried out, motioning for him to walk in through my open door. He smirked down at me before slowly strutting past me and into my living room. I smelled his cologne as he past me, and I almost crumpled down onto my carpet with how sweet he smelled.

His muscles flexed through his tight short sleeve white shirt as he looked around my apartment, and his dark blue jeans hung onto his perfect behind, making me want to do nothing more than reach over and cup it between my tiny hands. He looked so handsome and content outside of his business clothes, making me love him even more.

"A Jets fan huh?" He suddenly asked, with hands crossed over his face. I furrowed my brow at him before he nodded down to my shirt. I looked down and gasped realizing I was practically wearing nothing in front of him right now. I couldn't lift my face in fear that he would see the terribly bright blush that manifested on my cheeks. "Definitely would have thought you a Giants girl" He said with a chuckle, I could almost hear the smirk through his voice.

I slowly pulled my head up and glared at him. "Ew" was all I said, scrunching up my nose at the football team my father raised me to never cheer for. Cameron sucked a breath before the smirk left his face and he coughed awkwardly. I crossed my hands over my chest feeling suddenly insecure as Cameron's eyes raked over my barely covered legs.

"Hi Cameron!" I heard Talia's now chipper voice call out through the opening in my kitchen. She was smirking looking between the two of us while sipping her cup of coffee slowly. Cameron and Talia have met a couple times, when she visited me in the office, or she just happened to be with me when Cameron needed an errand done. She of course being my best friend knew all about my infatuation with my hunk of a boss.

"Hello Talia" Cameron said his eyes still not leaving me, whether he was looking at my messy bed head, or day old makeup, I would never know. But either way, I have seen myself enough times in the morning to know I was definitely nothing too pretty to look at this early.

"Ray, go put some pants on before Cameron has a heart attack" Talia said chuckling when she walked into the living room, before she gently pushed me out of my rooted spot down to my bedroom. I could feel Cameron's eyes on me the entire way, and it wasn't until I made it back to my bedroom and shut the door that i finally felt like I could breath.

Ten minutes later and I was finally dressed and felt somewhat presentable to actually be seen with my beautiful boss. Cameron's casual attire made me feel a lot better about choosing what i wore; light blue jeans, a plain black loose top and some old sandals I found in the back of my closet. It was pretty easy to choose what to wear seeing as everything I owned was pretty plain or old. I never found the need to go buy new clothes, I never went anywhere. I just tossed my long hair into a low pony tail and washed my old makeup off, to replace it with just mascara and blush.

"Wow, you sure don't take long to get ready do you?" Cameron asked when he saw me emerge into the living room. He was sitting crossed legged on my love seat, while Talia had curled herself back up on my couch and cocooned herself in a fleece blanket.

"Nope, Ray here can get ready in record time!" Talia called out, me still barely being able to see her through the fluff of blankets. But I smacked what I thought was her head, and by the responsive Ow! that came after it, i knew I was right. And I smirked in response before grabbing my purse and house keys.

"Don't be mad because it takes you two hours to leave the house!" I said to her as I tossed my phone and keys into my purse. Talia just glared and pulled her cell phone out to probably play whatever game she was obsessed with these days. Last week she was begging me to send her a virtual pig through some farming game, my response always being a shake of the head to my best friend.

"Ok, I'm leaving Lea, Ill see you tonight!" I called over to her before I let Cameron guide me out of my apartment. Talia grumbled a response and barely waved to me before turning back to her phone. I shut my door gently behind me and followed silently beside Cameron to my building's elevator. "What's tonight?" Cameron suddenly asked me catching me off guard. I looked over to see him leaning casually against the stainless steel wall of the elevator.

It is still so fascinating to me how different Cameron seemed when we weren't in the office together. He was so casual, and relaxed. He was like a normal human being, even though he still had me salivating over him wondering what was under his tight designer jeans. His dark hair was pushed lazily to the side, while his blue eyes held a certain something I had never seen in them before, like he was happier in the moment than ever before.

"Talia's art opening is tonight, she works at a gallery in the village" I explained to him, earning a simple head nod in response before the elevator opened up for us in the lobby. My doorman waved at us before Cameron led us over to his car; a black Mercedes Benz that probably cost more than my apartment does all year. Cameron surprised me when he opened my door for me, and waited until I was seated comfortably before smirking and closing the door behind me. He was more of a gentleman that I thought he was.

He started the car and quickly pulled out into the busy New York traffic before he spoke again. "I'd like to come tonight" He said, keeping his eyes on the road as he drove towards the bridge. I was confused as to why Cameron was driving towards the Brooklyn bridge, there were plenty of places to eat over here in Manhattan.

"To what? The art opening?" I asked looking with longing between his long arm that was rested casually over the steering wheel, to his long legs that were shifting gears. "Yes, Talia is a part of your life. I would like to support what she does. So can I come with you?" He asked, looking to me with hopeful eyes before looking out the window to stop at a red light.

"Um, yeah sure"

"Great, It's a date" Cameron said grinning over at me before taking off quickly through the red light.

"Shouldn't you wait to see how this date goes first?" I asked him, raising an eyebrow when he glanced over my way.

"I'm a hopeful man, Avery Montgomery" He said sending a wink my way. I let a sigh hiss through my teeth, feeling my heart skip a beat with that simple gesture, and let my head fall back against his black leather head rest. I then noticed that Cameron really was taking me all the way over to Brooklyn, as we were now driving over halfway through the Brooklyn bridge.

"Why are we going to Brooklyn?" I asked him, looking in admiration at the place I once called my home. My face was almost pressed against his expensive window seeing the place I haven't been to in months now. I have always been to busy to come over here, and with traffic it was almost an hour's drive in a cab. "You'll see" Was all Cameron said for the next ten minutes.

I don't know how he did it, I don't know how he found out about this place. Cameron parked in front of the diner I used to eat at with my family when I was a kid. We ate here every Saturday morning for as long as I can remember. The last time being the day before my father died. I felt my eyes grow watery as I looked over to Cameron who was looking at me wearily, probably wondering if he made a mistake taking me here or not.

But Cameron didn't realize just how much I missed what my life used to be, all the happy memories my childhood brought me. So him bringing me here, really did mean the world to me, as I was desperate for some form of remembrance for what my life used to be. After blinking away my unshed tears I reached over and grabbed Cameron's hand in mine, letting him know this was ok. "How did you know?" I asked him softly, still in shock that he brought me here.

"It's my secret. But let's get inside, there's someone meeting us" Cameron said before squeezing my hand and letting it drop on the center console in the car. He walked around to my side of the car and opened my door once again, and gently closed it behind me. I was confused as to who the hell was meeting us here, Cameron doesn't know anyone in my family, and certainly wouldn't invite my mother here after last night. I figured it was just someone I knew from work, which still didn't make sense since he said this was a date.

Cameron's hand was on the small of my back as he led me into the small diner, the bell ringing softly overhead signaling a customer. But instead of someone coming to take us to a booth like they normally did, Cameron just gently pushed me into the center of the diner. I looked back at him confused as to why he was standing behind me with a small smile on his face. "What's going on?" I asked him confused and feeling slightly hurt like this was too good to be true, like my boss didn't really want to do this with me like I thought when he first mentioned it.

"Hey baby sis" I heard behind me causing Cameron's smile to widen before he took a seat at the counter. I turned around to see Tommy standing there still in his uniform, grinning at me while playing with his patrol cap in his hands. I covered my mouth with my hands, not having any control over the sobs that poured out of my body. And I literally threw myself into my brother's arms, not realizing just how much I missed him.

Tommy chuckled and picked me up in his arms, picking my feet gently off the ground in the process. I could see Cameron looking at me with the brightest smile I have ever seen on the man. He brought me to my brother, to the only family I have left and for that he just made me love him even more. There was no turning back, Cameron had me hook line and sinker from this moment on. But seeing him look at me with the same amount of admiration that I was giving him, gave me hope that this wasnt all one sided.
