Chapter Four.
My day dragged on, the awful morning I had proving to set the tone for the rest of my day. I had to sit in meetings with obnoxious investors who were trying to low ball the company. And I hated seeing Cameron get so angry and frustrated throughout the day. Although seeing that vein in his neck pop out in anger, and watching his fists clench at his sides was a major turn on for me. I shook that thought from my head as I packed up my desk at the end of the day.
A knock on my door caused me to look up from packing my bag, to see Bradley standing there with his own bag thrown across his shoulder.
"Ready to be beautified?" Bradley asked with a smirk. Honestly I had forgotten all about his plan to drag me to the salon after work. I had been looking forward to a long hot bath and catching up on my full DVR box.
"Can we do it another day?" i asked stifling a yawn, not realizing how tired I had become.
"Oh no Avery, you can sleep in the salon chair!" Bradley exclaimed walking over and helping me pack up the rest of my things. I grunted a response that earned a laugh out of him, before turning off my computer and the lamp on my desk.
"Just let me tell Cameron I'm leaving" I said before popping my head into Cameron's office. Cameron was staring intently at his computer while typing away furiously. "Do you need anything else of me Cameron?" i asked softly when his stopped typing for a moment.
Cameron looked up and his stoic look brightened when he saw me, and he shook his head. "Everything's perfect Avery, have a good night" He said giving me a smile. His eyes raked down my body before he shook his head and turned towards his computer. I was thankful he couldn't see the blush that snuck it's way up my tanned cheeks. I closed his door gently behind me before turning to see Bradley smirking at me as he leaned against my desk.
"What?" I asked with a raised eyebrow as I grabbed my cell phone that was on the end of my desk and walked out of my office. Bradley was following behind me, and closed my door behind him.
"So how long have you been sleeping with the boss?" Bradley asked me, nudging my arm with his elbow with every step we took. I swear if I was drinking anything or chewing gum, this would be the moment I would be chocking to death.
"What!?" I asked. Looking at him as if he just said the most obscene thing in the world...Well I guess he sort of did, Cameron would never look at me the way he looks at the gorgeous woman he dates. The way he looks down at them as if they are the crowned jewels, and he was cherishing his time with them. No, nobody would ever look at me that way.
"Please, did you see the way he looked at you? I know lust when I see it" He said with a chuckle before the two of us walked into the half full elevator.
"Shut up Bradley, or I swear Ill kill you" I growled at him causing a few of the other people in the elevator to look at us strangely. When i first started working here people looked at me like I was below them, since I was a secretary and weren't a huge part of the company. But when they realized I was actually intelligent about business, and controlled everything to do with their boss. They started to respect me a little bit more. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brown University with my bachelors in business, but just like anyone just starting out in the city I needed to work my way from the bottom.
We exited the elevator, and fought the crowd of people trying to get out of the building. Bradley hailed us a cab and gave them the address, one I had never been too obviously. "Are we going to Chelsea?" I asked, noticing the cab was driving to the one area of New York I rarely stepped foot in.
"We sure are, my stylist will work magic on you. It also helps I live next door" Bradley said looking at the scenery passing us by. You could drive the same route every day, see the same buildings. But somehow it felt different every day. New York had this magical feel to it, and as far as I was concerned it was the greatest city in the world. With it's eccentric walks of life and exciting people on every street corner, you couldn't help but get swept away by it's magic.
Bradley and I made idle chit chat about work and what not before the cab pulled up in front of large white building with heavy glass windows. He climbed out first, and helped me by grabbing the pile of files I had brought with me, leaving me with just my bag to carry.
Stepping inside the salon I was immediately engulfed by the scent of hairspray and coloring. I heard blow dryers going off, and some form of techno music playing the background. But I soon took notice that i was the only member of the female gender in this entire building. The receptionist was male, the clients were male, hell even the stylists were all male. It didn't take me long to realize that wasn't an accident, and Bradley brought me to a gay salon.
I didn't mind in the slightest, I just hope they could handle my mess of hair. "Hey Charlie, brought my friend I was telling you about" Bradley said to the receptionist who had flaming shaggy red hair and these fierce blue eyes hidden behind a rim of eye liner. "Of course! You must be Avery!" Charlie exclaimed walking around the rounded desk to greet me.
I smiled politely and gave him a small wave as a greeting. "You have your work cut out for you guys" I said pointing to my hair that had fallen out of Bradley's braid a couple hours ago. It now looked like a bird had layed it's nest on the top of my head. "Honey we have seen worse" Charlie said with a smile before leading us towards and empty chair in the middle of the salon.
Charlie placed a smock around my shoulders and chatted with Bradley for a few, before hearing the phone ring and running off to do his job. "If Andrew cant make you look fabulous, nobody can" Bradley said sitting down in the chair off to the side and grabbing a hair magazine that was on the table.
I was fidgeting with my fingers under my smock, periodically glancing to other customers to check out their hair. Of course they were all perfectly styled, and almost all of them looked like they were about to walk the runway. If Andrew could work that kind of magic on my hair, I would be on cloud nine.
"I see you brought us someone new" I heard from behind me, and looked in the mirror to see who I was guessing to be Andrew. He had long light brown hair, falling past his shoulders, and green eyes much like my own. He was beautiful in such a different way. Sure Cameron would always be the most attractive man I would ever lay eyes on, with sharp business suits and perfectly shaved chin. But Andrew's eclectic taste in clothing and white fedora hat had me staring at him intently.
"And what are we doing for you today?" Andrew asked me through the mirror, playing with random strands of my hair.
"I don't know, Bradley dragged me here against my will" I said over dramatically while rolling my eyes. Andrew chuckled and looked over to Bradley who was already staring at him. "Sounds like Bradley" Andrew said winking at me through the mirror.
"Ha Ha. Just give her a trim and that conditioning treatment you made" Bradley said waving us off and turning back to his magazine. Andrew smiled at him but said nothing, I had to wonder if something was going on between these two. It was clear of their attraction, as both of them had a hard time keeping their eyes off of each other.
And hour later and I was looking in the mirror at a completely different person. My hair was shorter, a few inches past my shoulders. He had given me long bangs that perfectly framed my face and worked well with the many layers that were frayed into my hair. But the main thing was I had absolutely no frizz, instead my hair was as soft as velvet and I couldn't stop running my fingers through it. I always tried every product I could find to rid myself of this exhausting frizz ball on my head, and one hour with Andrew and it was gone in an instant.
"I love it" i cried out looking at myself in the mirror, so much so I couldn't look away. "You look gorgeous baby doll" Bradley said fawning over my hair, as he was now feeling the softness of it.
"Thank you so much Andrew!" i exclaimed as he led us to the front counter to pay. "That's what I'm here for" He said giving me a wink before wandering off somewhere in the salon. I didn't even care that my hair cost well over two hundred dollars, it was worth every penny.
And the fact that when I walked into work the next day and was actually getting second glances, told me it was something. I actually had confidence for once in my life, and I walked through the building with my head held high.
Cameron wasn't in his office when I went to drop off his coffee, so I left it on his desk and left my notes from an earlier meeting in a file. Somehow he had managed to make his desk in disarray in one night. There were pens everywhere, empty water bottles and scattered paperwork. I sighed before tossing all of the trash into the bin beside the desk. When I went to organize his paperwork, the sound of the door slamming shut made me drop them back onto the desk.
"What the hell are you doing in here?" I heard Cameron's gruff voice growl from the door. I frowned but didn't turn around, wondering what the hell I did to upset Cameron so much.
"I specifically stated that nobody is allowed in my office without my assistants approval. And seeing as how she isn't here yet, explain what you are doing at my desk?" He growled once more, I could practically feel his anger and yet I was frozen to my spot.
Cameron didn't know it was me. I couldn't blame him seeing as from the back I really didn't look like myself. I normally wore pants, and since today was blaring hot outside I opted for a skirt that ended right above my knee, and instead of my usual white blouse I decided on a blood red one made of silk. I guess you could say my hair made me ballsy about my clothing.
My silence must have angered him, because I heard his swift footsteps walking towards me. He grabbed my arm roughly and turned me around to face him, me almost clashing into his hard chest. He looked down at me and opened his mouth to yell at me once more, but stopped himself when he looked into my eyes.
I looked up at him with widened eyes as he clutched onto my arms tight in his large hands. "I'm so sorry Avery, I didn't know it was you" Cameron said loosening the grip on my arms. I smiled in response, glancing down to his plump lips that were slightly parted. God how much I wished to just kiss them, taste his lips on mine. God Avery get a grip on yourself I told myself. I really needed to stop thinking about my boss this way.
"What have you done to your hair?" Cameron asked pulling one hand away from my arm to run his thick fingers through my hair. I closed my eyes feeling the gentle tug of his hand through my now silky locks.
"Just needed a change" I said shrugging my shoulders and looking down to the locks of hair that was still clutched in his hand. Cameron was staring at me so intently I would have given everything to know what he was thinking. I suddenly felt cold when Cameron let my hair fall through his fingers and step away from me. I missed the warmth he provided from that one simple gesture, that one simple move that was enough to make my heart pound loudly in my chest.
"I guess I'll get to work" I mumbled seeing Cameron was slowly sipping his coffee and looking through the notes I left on his desk. I turned around and slowly unlocked my office door and turned the light on. I heard Cameron call my name, making me turn around and walk back into his office.
"You were beautiful before you know" Cameron said, his face clear of any emotion.
I frowned before quickly locking myself into my own office, not knowing any other reaction for him. I wasn't even with Cameron and he already ruined me for other men. No other man could make my heart race in my chest from just glancing at me through a window. No other man would send shivers down my spine by accidentally brushing fingers with mine.
A part of me hated Cameron for that, hated that every other man in my life I would just compare to him....
