Danni's POV
Waking up in the hospital is never fun. The constant beeping of the machines, the sterile smell, and two nurses tucking in my blankets as they whisper gossip back and forth about Judy's nasty divorce.
"Oh, good morning, dear," One of the old nurses greets me in a quiet, gentle voice when she sees that I'm waking up. I blink a few times, look around the room, and then try and remember why I'm in the hospital. "How are you feeling?"
I blink at her again. "Confused."
"You were in a car crash," She explains to me. That sentence unleashes a dam of memories being held in my brain about what happened. I slid into an intersection on a red light and I remember somebody t-boning my car and then after that, everything kind of goes blank.
"Where's Luna?" I ask the lady when I remember that Luna was in the car with me, she was on the side of the car that got hit. I feel an immediate sense of dread wash over me as I wait for the nurse to tell me what's going on.
"She's still in the ICU," She says as the other nurse leaves the room, probably to go get a doctor or something. "But she's going to be fine. Would you like some ice chips?"
She doesn't give me much of a choice because by the time she's done asking the question, she's already spooning little chips of ice into my dry mouth. I wait for the ice to melt on my tongue and then I swallow the cold water. It feels nice.
As I'm melting the ice on my tongue, a doctor comes into the room with a warm smile on his wrinkled face. "Hello, Danielle. I'm Dr. Rickard. How are you feeling?"
"Fine," I respond quickly just as a force of habit before I add, "Actually, my head does hurt a little bit."
"Okay, well let's get everything sorted out so that we can get some visitors back here for you. You're practically filling up the waiting room."
I'm silent. The nice nurse keeps giving me the ice chips as the doctor checks the machines and then adjusts something on the IV that's being fed into the back of my hand. He gives me two normal-looking pills and explains what they are but to be completely honest, I just kind of ignore all of the pharmaceutical talk because I don't understand any of it.
Once Dr. Rickard is done checking everything to make sure that I'm not dying, the nurse finishes the ice chips and then they're both leaving the room. The nurse leaves with a promise of bringing back somebody that I know. I'm hoping that it's Bailey because I really want to see him but then again, I kind of don't because he must be so freaked out right now.
I try to fix my hair a little bit with the arm that isn't being stabbed with fluids but I'm only alone for a few minutes before the door is swinging open and my beautiful boyfriend is standing in the doorway. I smile at him and I'm about to say something witty but before I can even utter a word, he's racing toward me and then wrapping me in a tight hug.
"You scared the shit out of me," He sighs into the shoulder of my hospital gown. "Are you okay? How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling like that's the third time that somebody's asked me that in the past five minutes," I respond. "But I'm fine. Really, I'm totally fine."
"You do remember me, don't you?" He wonders as I'm running my fingers through his thick golden brown hair. So soft.
"What? Bailey, yes, I remember you. Why would I not remember you?" I raise my eyebrows at him as he sits down on the side of the bed, keeping my IV hand held firmly in his.
"You were the one that made me watch that stupid The Vow movie. You know, fuck you for making me watch that because I thought that you were going to forget me," He starts to rant to me, freaking out just like I knew that he would. "You scared the shit out of me."
"I'm really super-sorry about that," I mutter under my breath. "I didn't mean to."
"Well, you're really super-not forgiven," He responds, carefully lifting my hand to his lips and kissing my knuckles.
"Have you talked to my parents?" I ask him. I cough a little bit from my dry throat.
"Yeah, they're on their way," He confirms with a nod. "So is Quinn."
"Oh, god," I groan, resting back on the cheap pillow behind me. "They're going to freak out. How bad do I look?"
"Completely honest?"
I try to nod but my neck is really stiff so I just say, "Yeah, completely honest."
"Not too awesome," He sighs. "I mean, you're beautiful of course but... here, I'll find you a mirror or something."
He gets up from the edge of the bed and starts looking around the room until he finds a metallic food tray on the table by the door. Picking it up, he brings it over to me and holds it up to my face so that I can see my terrifying reflection. I have a huge bandage on the left side of my forehead, a black eye, and a few cuts and bruises around my face and chest.
"I look disgusting," I groan, pushing the tray away so that Bailey will put it down now. "Why haven't you broken up with me already?"
"Stop it," He sighs, leaning forward and he looks like he's about to kiss me.
"My lip is bloody," I say before our lips connect even though I'm burning inside to kiss my boyfriend.
Bailey pauses and then kisses my cheek instead.
"Will you do me a big favor and go check on Luna? They said that she's in the ICU but I want to make sure that she's going to be okay," I hold his hand in mine again as he sits back down beside me.
"I talked to her friends about half an hour ago and they said that she's still unconscious but they're almost positive that she'll wake up soon," He explains to me.
"When is soon?"
He shrugs at me. "I don't know, babe, I'm sorry. Within a few days probably. She's going to be alright."
"All of her friends are here?" I ask him.
"Well, I don't know how many friends she has, so I don't know if all of them are out there, but there's five of them out there and then her mom and her brother."
"Her mom and her brother?" I look at him without even trying to hide how surprised I am to hear that her family is here at the hospital. I mean, it shouldn't be surprising considering she was just in a bad car accident but her family is really distant so I would just assume that they wouldn't stay here, especially since the doctors don't know when she'll wake up. They just don't seem that dedicated but then again... what do I know?
"Yeah..." He trails off, obviously not understanding my shock. "But one of her guy friends seems to really be freaking out. I think his name is Greg or Grey or something like that? Is he her boyfriend or something?"
"No but they're complicated," I shake my head at him. "Who else is out there?"
"A bunch of people from school are out there, your family should be here soon. They've been traveling all night," He explains. "You should call them and let them know that you're awake."
"I'll call Quinn later," I assure him. "But right now will you just sit with me? Did I miss anything in the world while I was out?"
"You were only out for about twenty hours and thirteen minutes—not that I was counting or anything but I was—so nothing in the world really changed. Except for my world, because that's you and you were asleep the whole time," Bailey tells me, kissing my cheek again before sitting closer to me on the bed. He's careful not to hurt my sore neck or head but I'm now able to rest my head on his shoulder which makes me feel exponentially better.
"You're sweet," I laugh a little bit at him.
"I know," He concedes. "And I love you."
"I love you too," I mutter softly, trying not to smile because it hurts my split lip but he makes it so hard to not smile. "And we're totally going to do it later."
"I don't think the doctor would be okay with that," Bailey says with a soft groan to his voice. "You really hit your head pretty hard, he told me that you probably won't be up for physical activity for two to three weeks."
"Okay, well then we're totally going to do it in two to three weeks," I say, trying not to grin but like I just said, he makes it so hard to not smile.
"We can do other things while we wait," He offers as a runner up idea as he puts a hand on my thigh over my hospital blanket.
"Bailey, believe it or not, being in a hospital gown with an IV pushing drugs into my veins does not put me in a sexy mood," I tell him with an apologetic frown. "When I get out of here though, I'm totally going to rock your world."
"You already rock my world," He assures me, kissing my cheek again.
I press my palm against Bailey's stubbly jaw and offer him a smile even though I'm sure that my smile right now isn't so charming considering how bruised and gross my face looks. "Did the doctor tell you when I could get out of here?"
He shakes his head at me. "No, but I'll go see if I can find him to talk to you."
"Okay. Check on Luna while you're out there."
After he stands up, he turns to look at me with a look that says 'there's not going to be any news'.
"Please," I add. "I'm really worried."
"Alright. I'll check on her. Do you want me to send somebody else back to see you while I'm gone?"
"Grey," I decide with a small nod. "Thanks, Bai."
I love that nickname for Bailey because it's short for Bailey but it also sounds like bae which makes me giggle. He thinks that it's annoying but right now, he just winks at me, says "I love you" and then he's out the door.
I forget to ask him to get my phone for me though because I want to call my family to let them know that I'm awake but I don't know where my phone is and I probably can't stand up from the bed anyway considering I'm attached to the IV still. I'll just wait for the doctor to get here, I'm sure he knows where my stuff is.
Dr. Rickard comes into the room but he's really busy so he greets me, checks my vitals and everything, and then explains that I have a minor head injury and just some cuts and bruises. I tell him that it doesn't feel minor but then he reminds me that at least I didn't lose any memory. I mean, the time just before the crash is a little fuzzy but that's it, so he does have a point there. He leaves the room after telling me that he wants to keep me over night just to make sure that I'm healing properly but he'll have the IV out within the hour.
He's in and out so quickly that I don't have time to ask him for my phone though.
However, just as Dr. Rickard is leaving, Luna's friend is coming in. Grey looks incredibly confused as to why he's in here, why I wanted to meet with him. This will be a lot more awkward than I had originally anticipated.
"Hi," I greet him as he shuts the door behind him and I try to offer him a small smile so that he thinks that I'm friendly. My lip hurts when I smile though, so it doesn't last very long. "I'm Danielle."
"Yeah, is this going to take long? They're about to let us go back to see Luna," He says, motioning toward the door.
"She's still not awake?"
"No," He sighs, staying near the door. "She's still not awake."
"Well, when she does wake up, you should tell her how you feel," I tell him and when he gives me a blank, wide-eyed stare, I return with, "Okay, yeah, my head may feel like it's exploding but it's really obvious that you're into her. She's never going to love you like you love her though, and the only way that you'll really be able to move on is by telling her."
"And who are you again?" He wonders with a confused frown.
"You don't really know me," I say, leaning my head back in an attempt to alleviate some of the pain. "I know you a lot more. Luna talks about you a lot."
"Alright, well thanks for the advice, babe, but-"
"No," I interrupt him with a slight shake of my head. "Don't call me that."
"Of course. I'm going to go now," He starts stepping back toward the door and I feel like I make him a little uncomfortable because he isn't used to talking to girls who stand up for themselves.
"You should write her a letter if you can't do it in person," I add before he can leave. "She loves letters."
"You don't know what you're talking about," Grey tells me with a shake of his head. "So kindly fuck off, alright?"
"Alright."
He glares at me for a moment and I stare back at him, not glaring back but not flinching away from his glare either which I'm assuming he was expecting. He is kind of scary looking, I'll admit that, but I won't let him intimidate me. After a long moment of silence, he turns and leaves the room. And I didn't ask him to get my phone.
He probably won't listen to a word that I just said but I hope that he realizes that there's at least a possibility that I'm right. I'm going to drop it now though, I'm not going to bring it up again because it's none of my business, I guess. Only a few minutes of silence pass before the door opens and I look up, expecting Bailey but I'm surprised when it's actually my brother.
"Hey, Quinn," I greet him in my quiet, raspy voice.
"Hey," He mumbles, walking toward the bed. "You really fucked up this time, huh?"
"It was the ice," I defend even though I know that it's mostly my fault that the car crash happened because I was going a bit too fast. "Oh God, what about the people in the other car? Are they okay?"
"Yeah, the guy dislocated his shoulder but he's fine," He responds. "According to the doctor anyway. How are you feeling?"
"Well, I was doing fine but now I'm feeling really crappy because you're right. I really fucked up. I should have been going so much slower and I should have been more careful and this... this is my fault," I'm suddenly hit by that realization that I haven't really had time to think about until my brother oh-so kindly reminded me of that fact. "Luna is unconscious because of me."
"Hey, no, I didn't mean it like that," Quinn says quickly, stepping forward so that he can sit on the edge of the bed where Bailey had been sitting just a little while ago. "It isn't your fault, Dan, it was just the ice. This stuff happens. What's important is that everybody's going to be okay."
"You're missing class," I state.
"Yeah, well when Mom called and told me that you were in the hospital, I wasn't going to not come see you, dumbass," He states. "But don't worry about that. I'll email my professors and it'll be fine. You really scared everybody. Mom and Dad are almost here and Mom is about to have a conniption."
"I bet," I mumble, knowing how caring and worrisome my mother is. I can't imagine the amount of stress she's in right now and how much ranting I'm going to get when she gets here about how worried she's been this whole time.
"Wasn't that guy that was just in here Luna's friend? What was he doing in here?" He completely changed the subject and I give him a strange look.
"I just had to talk to him about Luna," I state with a small yawn.
"Really?" He wonders, sounding suspiciously curious about the situation.
"What's it to you?" I wonder teasingly.
He rolls his eyes at me. "Just trying to start a conversation."
"Hey, how's your girlfriend by the way?" I mention Paige with a look of distaste because I don't really like his girlfriend at all. I've only met her once when I went home just before Thanksgiving and she was very distant, she didn't really care about talking to us at all and she was just on her phone the whole time. Not only that but whenever I hear Quinn talk about her, he's always complaining about her or fighting with her.
"She's still my girlfriend," He confirms with a nod, answering the only question that I really care about.
"Major disappointment there," I sigh.
"Because you think that I should date your friend?"
"I didn't say that."
He gives me a look that says that he's not going for any of my shit. "Come on, Danielle. She's nice but I'm sure that she can find her own dates."
"I'm not trying to push you two together. Do I think that you two would be cute? Yeah, sure, but I'm not butting in," I defend. "You know, if you didn't have such an... unpleasant girlfriend, I wouldn't be so occupied with finding you a better one."
"You think that Luna is better than Paige?" He looks at me with a sort of incredulity. "Paige is pre-med, she has her life together. She doesn't even drink. Your friend, Luna, is practically an alcoholic and... I mean, I only talked to her for a few hours one night and I can already tell that she has a mountain of issues."
"Shut up," I scoff. "She's a good person. At least she cares about people, unlike Paige. At least Luna cares about the people around her. She'd die for any of her friends. But, you know, you're right. Your girlfriend may be stuck up and bratty but at least she doesn't drink the alcohol and she wants to be a doctor."
"You're getting angry," He accuses me with a small sigh.
"I'm getting annoyed," I correct him. "You're being judgmental."
"And you're being..." He stops and takes a deep breath. "You know, it doesn't matter I'm just happy that you're okay."
"Yeah. Well, I'm really glad that you came so thanks for being here," I mumble because I'm in a hospital room and one of my best friends is in the ICU. I'm not in the mood to argue with my brother right now.
"Sure thing. I'm going to get you something to eat, are you hungry?"
"I really want a chocolate milkshake," I tell him as he's standing up from the side of the bed. Quinn leans down and kisses the side of my forehead before telling me that he loves me and then leaving the room.
Shortly after that, one of the nurses comes into the room to remove the IV needle from my hand and to give me the go ahead to eat the milkshake that Quinn has gone to get me which is good because it'd really suck of my brother came back with a shake that I'm not even allowed to drink.
"Hey, good news," Bailey walks into the room as the nurse is still checking all of the machines and getting my temperature and everything. "They're taking Luna out of the ICU, she's stable. She's still unconscious but she's getting better."
"That's great," I smile at him. He glances at the nurse but when she doesn't tell him to go away, he walks farther into the room.
"Yeah, I figured you'd think so. Are you feeling any better?"
"I'm waking up some more," I tell him. "And I want a shower."
"You have your own bathroom so whenever you're ready, everything is set up for you to take a shower. We suggest that you wait at least one more hour and to have a nurse's supervision. Not in the shower with you, just here in the room to make sure that help is here if you need it."
"I'll help," Bailey offers quickly. "Help you shower, I mean. You know, if somebody has to do it."
Blushing, I look away from him just to look to my side and see the nurse giving me a smile as she tries to hold back laughter. I look back at Bailey. "Shut up."
He grins at me, leaning over the bed to kiss my cheek. "I only do it because I love you."
"Gee, golly, aren't I just the luckiest gal in the world."
