↷ TWENTY THREE
''Holy fuck!''
A groggy Devin Greene jumped off the bed, her eyes glued to the time that it read on her phone.
''Holy fuck, get up!'' She tells to the two girls in the room that were still asleep, peacefully. Devin kicks the air matress, a small and agitated grunt heard from her throat.
''Oh my god, what?'' Kat flatly questions with her eyes closed, remained in her comfortable position.
''It's 10 : 09.''
As if, in an instant, sleep was no longer a factor for effectiveness when it came down to how quick Katherine Williams and Hannah Baker got out of bed.
While the girls were out, taking up both upstairs and downstairs bathroom, Devin made use of herself and walked over to her bag.
She pulled out a hair brush for herself, along with three hair tools such as a straightener, her curling wand that came with various wands and her waver.
Leaving her products at Hannah's vanity, she returns to her bag and pulls out a fresh pair of undergarments, along with the outfit she had planned for this specific day.
After everything was laid into play, she had perked from her spot on the floor while going through her social media for the past ten minutes as Hannah called from the bottom landing, ''I'm out!''
Grabbing her undergarments, deodorant, and toothbrush, Devin was passing by Hannah on her way down the stairs and into the bathroom.
The room was moist from the quick shower and condensation was performing on the cabinet mirror.
Devin Greene made sure to take as long as Hannah Baker did by brushing her teeth in the shower and putting on her deodorant before putting on any piece of underwear.
Running up the stairs after her morning routine, she had walked into a room where her friends were pacing back and forth, doing various actions to their benefits.
Hannah was dressed in a lightly lined long sleeve beige sweater with a orange button down corduroy skirt. She topped it off with a pair of knee high heels she borrowed from Devin in a black hue.
Kat decided to keep things simple with a purely red skin tight chest that indefinitely clung to her cleavage, allowing her the need to not wear a bra. She wore simple black heels with a black strap going around the ankle.
''Hurry up,'' Kat tells Devin who was slipping on her outfit. She was pulling on an orange copper pair of satin shorts, matching with her off the shoulder black long sleeve crop top. She was saving her black booties for last, given that she needs to do her hair and make up. ''I have less than forty minutes.''
Kat had plugged in both flat iron and curling wand by the outlet next to Hannah's vanity. She sat on the white wooden bench, and began brushing her natural curls out while Hannah stood behind her, focused on the highlight she was applying.
Devin walked over to the girls after her outfit was set and grabbed a brush from a small container on Hannah's vanity. She pulled her hair out of her ponytail and brushed through her knotted curls.
''Hairstyles? Go,'' Kat instructs to Devin, needing to know the game plan for today's look.
Devin points a finger down at Kat after brushing through her hair, placing the brush down on the desk and using that free hand to run through her hair. ''Sophisticated curls,'' She then points at Hannah. ''Straight,'' She then points to herself. ''Small curls and braids.''
''What about make up?'' Kat asked, a brow cocked at Hannah through the mirror.
''Whatever we can't do, we do it in the car.''
Devin's ringtone started blaring through the busy atmosphere.
''Ugh,'' Devin groans again. She pats Kat's head and tells her, ''Start straightening.''
Leaving the small corner, Devin picks her phone off of the nightstand and answers the call.
''Hello?''
''You guys ready?'' Jeff asked.
''Ugh,'' She groans. Pulling the device away from her ear, she taps the screen and puts the call on speaker. ''We're getting ready right now.''
Making her way back to the vanity, she slides the phone on top of it and takes the iron from Kat's grip, taking control of her hair.
''What, now? It's going to start soon,'' Jeff tells them, as if the girls weren't aware.
''You don't think we don't know that-'' Kat snapped until she cringed. ''Ow, watch it.''
''Stop moving your head,'' Devin instructs. She was ironing her baby hairs and she needed her to remain still for at least a minute.
''What happened that made you guys wake up late?'' He asks.
Hannah scoffs, pulling away from her mascara wand. ''Ask your girlfriend.''
''Hey,'' She arches her brows. ''We needed to sleep.''
''What you do?'' He questions sternly. He knew Devin Greene was a night owl, no matter if she slept a regular schedule, and she's do anything and everything in her power to keep her company just as energized as she was.
''We listened to music,'' Devin tells him simply. It was only partial of the truth.
''I call shenanigans,'' Hannah exclaims. ''You named it yourself, a throwback dance party.''
''Shenanigans?'' Kat furrows her brows. ''What happened to the word bullshit?''
''How quick do you guys think you'll be?'' Jeff continues to question. He definitely wasn't at ease, especially with Devin.
After what he was inform the previous night, he became more tense.
It definitely didn't go unnoticed by the group either.
''We should be there before the ceremony starts,'' Hannah insist, organizing her make up back in order on her vanity.
''Jesus, why is your panties in a twist, babe?'' Devin hissed.
''They're not,'' He fires back.
All at once, the girls had stopped their motion and eyed Devin's phone with furrowed brows. Even Clay Jensen, who was pacing back and forth next to him stopped in his tracks to furrow his brows at him.
''Woah, Atkins,'' Kat breathes out. ''You need to relax.''
''I'm stuck outside with the other graduates wearing a suit in eighty degree heat, it's hot,'' He informs them on his struggles.
''Oh, well you can only imagine how the graduates feel wearing a cap and gown in the eighty degree heat,'' Kat remarks with the roll of her eyes.
By now, the girls were back on track. Devin was almost done straightening Kat's hair, but Hannah needed to get ready so she can help the others get ready faster as well.
So she grabbed one of her own straighteners from on top of the white wooden desk, and went to the outlet by her bed side table and plugged the flat iron in. Hannah made herself comfortable on the air mattress and began working on her hair.
''Why don't you go sit in the car and turn on the AC?'' Devin suggests softly to him.
The line was silent beside the background noise coming from the graShe She She She duates, families and friends standing outside the high school.
Clay was heard quietly beside Jeff as he mumbles, ''Why didn't we think of that?''
Pulling away from Kat's hair, Devin leans over and smiles softly, ''You're welcome, boys.''
× × ×
''There you guys are,'' Clay Jesnsen exclaims with a great smile, just as the girls ran from up the parking lot.
Kat had ignored the guys and continued to run past them and towards the graduates, where she could squeeze into some last minute photos.
As Devin walked up to Jeff's side, Hannah proclaims, ''Not to mention, we have a good give five minute to kill.''
Devin Greene attempted to slide her arms around Jeffery Atkins torso, but he kept his arms restrained to his side's.
Taking a step back, Devin calls with furrowed brows, ''Babe?''
''What, Devin?'' He snaps.
Clay Jensen and Hannah Baker intently watched as Devin flattened her lips into a straight line and shrugging her shoulders. ''You look really good today, hun.''
''The gel in my hair got washed out from the sweat,'' He pointed out, through his hair didn't look at all out of place.
She shakes her head softly. ''Nobody can tell.''
''Uh huh,'' He hummed, looking away towards the graduates that were told to get into two single file lines.
''We should start heading inside,'' He tells the group.
He was the first to walk towards the front doors of the building, leaving Devin, Clay and Hannah to trail behind from a distance.
Hannah and Clay were speechless, they couldn't believe how Jeff was behaving, and of all people, towards Devin.
Then, to add the cherry on top, Devin isn't retaliating the excessive attitude back. She's being exceptionally kind and brushing it all under the rug.
Hannah furrows her brows at Clay Jensen who turned to look down at a distressed Devin Greene.
He leans closer to her side and mumbles, ''For what it's worth-'' Devin looks up with a cocked brow. ''You look great.'' He looks back at Hannah and smiles softly. ''You both do.''
A thought had dawned onto the two girls. While Hannah felt like the compliment was only received out of pity so she wouldn't feel left out, Devin realized with how dismissive Jeff was, it actually made her feel bad.
More of herself then with what was going on. And it hurt like a bitch.
But the girls had smiled at each other and at Clay, before Devin wrapped an arm around Clay's torso, clinging closer to him for a hug.
× × ×
Jeff Atkins and Clay Jensen were the first to arrive for the small get together at Monet's.
The ceremony had finished twenty minutes before they left, and the group decided as one of the final moments should be shared over some frappuccinos.
The girls were taking their time with photographs in the school auditorium and parking lot as the guys took a seat by the windows.
''Kat really knows how to make an entrance and an exit,'' Jeff shakes his head, chuckling softly.
''She actually told everybody in her graduation class to suck one because it looks like they need it when getting her diploma,'' Clay reminisced.
Jeff chuckles again as he leans his arms onto the table. ''Ah, I'm gonna miss her.''
''And what about Devin?''
He furrows his brows, jerking his head back. ''Why would I miss her when she's not going anywhere?''
''Dickhead,'' He calls him with flat features. ''What's going on with you and Devin?''
''What are you talking about?''
Clay lagged his head to the side. ''You might as well get some sense with me before you do so with Devin. And I think I'm a better option.''
''There's nothing going on, we're fine,'' He continues to lie.
''You know only girls use that fine line when things aren't really fine?'' He counters with arched brows.
This is Jeff Atkins, his best friend. He could tell straight through his lies, and he couldn't let him slide if things weren't okay.
Jeff pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes shut, breathing out a sigh. ''It's nothing. It's just-''
He looks up and pursed his lips. ''I just heard some shit that's got me paranoid.''
''Like what?''
He opened his mouth to tell him the full details when his attention was caught by Kat, Devin, and Hannah walking up to the door of the coffee shop.
''I'll tell you later,'' His voice dropped several octaves when the door open, the bell chime being heard.
''What?'' He breathes out with furrowed brows until he caught sight of the girls.
The girls approached the table, giggling at a joke that was made.
''I still can't believe he actually handed you a card,'' Devin laughs, holding the information in front of her as she walked around Jeff towards the seat available next to him.
Hannah was too busy giggling to even prosper a proper sentence, allowing for Kat to add on as the girls took a seat. ''It's like he was handing out business cards for his spank bank.''
Jeff Atkins sat on one end of the table while Clay Jensen took up the other. Hannah Baker, Katherine Williams and Devin Greene took up one side of it as the other side was pushed against the clear glass of the window.
''What are you guys talking about?'' Jeff asks.
Devin hands him the card with a phone number on it. ''Emanuel Bishop walked up to Hannah on our way out, gave her this as a booty call contact.''
''And I wasn't the only one,'' Hannah whispers through her laughter.
''This would be so much funnier if I had my copy too,'' Kat chuckles, her features flat with disappointment.
Jeff cocks a brow at his girlfriend, edging his arm on the table closer towards Devin's, nudging her. ''What happened? You didn't get one?''
Devin bursted into another fit of laughter. ''What? I thought you of all people would be happy I didn't get one. Guys get the hint, I'm someone's property.''
''I can already hear the feminists that could only think how wrong you were in that sentence,'' Clay remarks.
Kat leans forward and asks ''Hey, did you guys order yet?''
Jeff shakes his head. ''We just got here, actually. Like, five minutes before you guys did.''
''Oh,'' Hannah perks up in her seat. She had calmed down from her giggle fest and was looking at her phone. She reads the notification off of her lock screen, ''New season of Degrassi comes out on Netflix next week.''
Devin's wide brown eyes look up at Jeff, grinning from ear to ear. ''We binge watching, hun?''
He hums before shaking his head. His lips were flattened into a straight line. ''Nah, I'm fine.''
Devin laughs again. ''You know,'' She lifts one arm that was already resting on the table up, to rest her chin in the palm of her hand. ''You're especially funny today, Jeffery Atkins.''
He eyed her oddly. ''Oh, yeah? How so?''
Her smile vanished along with the cheery tone the second she responds, ''That fucking attitude you keep using on me.''
He looks away with a sigh, tempting to roll his eyes even. He used a hand to wipe his face down.
''Look,'' He breathes. He slams his arm on the table when turning to her. ''Don't ruin, Kat's day.-''
Clay, Kat and Hannah gaped quietly at the scene unfolding before then as Devin jerks back.
''We'll talk about this later.''
Devin chuckles dryly as she points a finger to herself, jabbing her finger into her chest. ''I wasn't the one that made the phone call, rushing the girls to get ready for a ceremony that wasn't even meant for you. I didn't embarrass you by being a fucking brat over the heat or whatever the excuse may be.''
Devin pushes herself out of her seat and takes a stand. ''So when we talk about this later, which we will, it's gonna start off by you coming up to me with an apology and an explanation for what's crawled in your dick.''
Devin pushed her chair in and turned to Kat, Clay and Hannah. She breathes out a tired smile and says, ''Congrats, again, Kat. I'll see you guys tonight.''
Did Devin take it over the top?
Not one bit.
When they found the seats Jeff had saved for the group in the auditorium, Hannah and Clay let Devin walk through first so she could have a seat next to him. Once Jeff had realized, he had called Clay Jensen over for better company.
She tried to take photos with him once the ceremony was over and he'd actually spazz, suddenly afraid of the camera.
Even during the ceremony, itself, while she was recording, she would turn to him while talking and he would be so angry when he would tell her to turn the camera away from him.
She couldn't keep playing the nice card, it wasn't worth being treated like shit.
So when Devin Greene stormed out of Monet's, she sure felt glad to get this problem off of her chest.
Thing was, now the problem was on the table. And she was afraid of the results to it.
× × ×
Devin Greene entered Kat's house that evening two hours later then the actual time everyone was suppose to arrive for the party. Her hair hair had gotten messy and loose from this morning, but with a little touch up and some hairspray, it looked just as good. She was wearing a thin brown body suit with a slit that ran down her boobs, showing much cleavage and a pair of camouflage sweatpants. She matched it with an all black pair of Nike hightops.
''What's your deal, Devs?'' Kat exclaims, causing Devin to turn swiftly to her.
She grinned when she saw Kat and Hannah walking up to her, arms link and drinks held in their hands.
''You trying to steal my spotlight?''
Devin jerks back, her weight dropped onto her left leg while her right was propped out. She smacked a hand to her chest and rested her other hand on her hip. ''I have no idea what you're talking about.''
Kat cranes her neck forward, narrowing her eyes. ''Don't play stupid. You're dressing supah-dupah sexy on my night.''
She flips her hair and smirks at her, suppressing an urge to laugh. ''Well, what can I say, it's a natural gift.''
Hannah scoffed, a smile playing at her lips as she removes her arm from Kat's to hold a hand up. ''Hold on a second, Kat.''
She walks in between the two and glances back at Devin every now and then as she spoke, ''I think Devs, here, got a little agenda with this outfit.''
Kat gasps, ''Devs.''
The brunette slaps her arms against her sides. ''I just want to show Jeff what he's got, see if it knocks some sense into him.''
''Hmm,'' Kat hums. ''This is gonna be an interesting night.''
''Yeah,'' She breathes out. ''Speaking of, are the guys here yet?''
Hannah lifts up a finger. ''No, but, we are waiting to see if Clay gets here because we made a bet.''
Devin cocks a brow. ''Is my relationship rubbing off on you guys?''
Hannah nods her head. ''Its possible.''
Kat waves Hannah off before explaining to Devin, ''We made a bet to see whether or not Clay actually does come. If Clay does, Hannah wins, if he doesn't, I win.''
Devin jerks back, nodding in agreement with Hannah. ''Clay is so gonna come.''
''Don't jinx me, Devs.''
Hannah shook her head at her while Devin laughs.
''Listen, I'm gonna go get a drink, catch up with you guys in a few, okay?''
''Alright,'' The girls broke out into a smile, departing their ways with small byes.
Devin managed to slip around those who gotten drunk early in the night and made her way into the kitchen.
It wasn't necessarily crowded given there were two kegs in the backyard, so there were only people lingering.
Devin avoided the red solo cups lying around and headed straight for the refrigerator. She opens it to pull out a fresh beer bottle before closing it.
''Shit!'' She exclaims once she closes the door. She back slaps Justin Foley against his chest as he starts laughing. ''That's not funny, Foley.''
He arches his brows, smiling wide, exposing his pearly whites. ''How close were you to dropping that?''
He laughs even harder when she lifts a up a free hand, her pointer finger leaving some space above her thumb as her answer.
''But, see, if I were to drop that, it wouldn't be funny, now would it?''
He furrows his brows, holding his arms out from his side and pushing his chest out as he takes small steps closer to Devin. ''Are you testing me, Greene?''
Devin didn't even get to have the chance to open her drink before setting it down on the island next to them, as she took slow and small steps backwards, away from him.
''You started it.''
She giggles uncontrollably, turning at the heel of her foot to run once he charges for her.
She shrieks when he wraps both his arms around her torso from behind and threw her on top of the island.
''Woah,'' Devin's voice dropped just as Justin Foley smoothly took his place in between her legs. ''Personal space, Foley.''
He put both hands on each side of her, caging her as he leaned forward, his voice dangerously low. ''Ah, come on, Greene.''
He lifts a hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, getting closer until his breath tickled her skin. ''It's summertime, he don't gotta know.''
Devin pushes him off of her and gets off of the wooden island. She turns to walk away, but her heart dropped in the pit of her stomach when Jeff marched over to the two.
He grips onto her hand and pulls her away from him, leading her towards the staircase.
She eyes him from behind curiously. What was he going to say to her? She didn't do nothing wrong, and she stopped Justin ahead of time before he was able to try anything.
He lead her into Kat's room. The room had a few boxes towering small corners and her mattress was lying on the ground. There was a small night light that lit up the room, but it didn't light up much.
''What is wrong with you?'' She breathes out. She was practically out of breath, she didn't realize she was running just to keep up with Jeff's fast pace.
''Do you love another guy?'' He blurts out.
She jerks back, her features flat. ''I love Matthew.''
He looks away with a scoff.
''Okay,'' She chuckles dryly. ''You're not making any sense right now. Are you okay? What's wrong?''
''Tell me that it's just me,'' He begs.
She furrows her brows. ''What?''
''Just say it,'' He urges breathlessly. She was scared to see him like this. He looked so fragile before her. He stared down at her with wide eyes, lines creased on his forehead and his chest heaving up and down.
She smiles at him softly, reaching out to hold his hand. She gives it a tight squeeze and reminisced, ''It's just us. It'll always be just us.''
He breathes out a chuckle. That was what he told Devin Greene over the phone the first day of their blossoming relationship when she had paranoia.
Did he overreact?
Maybe a little. But she couldn't blame him for reacting the way he did when he found her in that position. So many people are sticking this image into his head that Devin Green isn't a good girlfriend, that she's out and about with every other guy on the block.
Though, this didn't explain his sour mood for earlier. That's why Jeff Atkins didn't feel as if he was overreacting.
''Did somebody tell you something?'' She asks, tilting her head to the side.
He shook his head. ''No. I just really wasn't in the mood earlier and I'm sorry that I took it out on you.''
Bullshit. Oh, how she wished she could be able to say that out loud. She knew that he was lying, it was rare when Jeff Atkins was in a mood unless someone caused it. It was usually him that was in a good mood and Devin in a sour one.
But for some reason, Devin didn't feel the need to call him out on his lie. Instead, for the first time, she doubts her gut instincts and smiles softly at him. ''It's fine. I guess I should apologize for yelling at you.''
''Ah,'' He waves her off. He pulls his hand away from hers and wraps his arms around her shoulder, pulling her into a hug. She buries the side of her face into his chest, wrapping her arms around his torso. She felt his chest vibrate as he spoke, ''Don't worry about it.''
There it was. The first lie buried in their relationship.
