↷ TWENTY SIX

''Mm, how long have you been up?''

Devin Greene smiles up at Jeffery Atkins droopy eyes that haven't quite yet adjusted to the immense lighting entering the bedroom early that morning. In a subtle motion, she shakes her head and whispers almost breathlessly, ''Not long.''

A corner of his lips quirk into a vague smile while looking down at her. Her legs tangled with his under the covers and her arms clung all around his torso as her head rested on his bare chest.

They weren't like that for the whole night of course. The slept facing opposite directions spite from how tired they became the night before. They just happened to roll around in their sleep and ended up in this position.

A soft lock of her hair was being fiddled in his index finger. He found it so entertaining, the way her hair would unravel after it's been twirled and just falling back against the pillow. She hummed positively against his touch, enjoying the fact that he was playing with her.

''What do you want to do today?'' His horsed morning voice asked with a raised brow.

She whines a small protest. ''Can't we just stay in for the day?''

His chest vibrated against her ear as he chuckles briefly. ''We leave tomorrow night, though.''

''We'll go all out tomorrow then,'' She clings to him tighter. ''I'm comfortable here.''

He couldn't waver the grin conquering his features. He enjoyed the fact that his girlfriend rather spend quality time together instead of having the others around for a plan. ''But..'' He began to counter but watched as she shook her head vigorously against his argument.

''No,'' She mumbles, pursing her lips into a frown.

''The others-''

''Not my problem.''

''One of them is your brother?'' He states curiously.

She rests her chin on his chest to meet eye contact. ''Your point?''

''What are they gonna do?''

She shrugs her shoulders. ''They're big kids, they can figure it out.''

''Dev,'' He scolds warningly.  The corners of her lips drag out into another frown, begging with just those dull brown eyes as a way to win her case. But she knew she couldn't leave the group hanging. She was the one who suggested they all should come down here.

''Fine,'' She gave in, her frown never ceasing while agreeing to his terms.

A small scoffs falls from his lips as he leans over, barely causing a motion in the bed while pressing his lips against hers. She smiles against his lips while maneuvering into the kiss, falling in sync with his motions.

The tension seemed to grown thicker the longer the kiss lasted as Jeff lifts himself over Devin's physique, towering over her boy and placing both of his arms and legs and either side of her body.

Her hands landed on his shoulders, pulling him closer as her hands wandered towards the back of his neck and into the roots of his hair.

She moans into the kiss before speaking through each peck, ''I need to pee.''

Her skin felt heated as he sinks his teeth into her bottom lip. Her eyelids were hooded while her pupils blown with lust intently watched his teeth pull her lip away and easily letting go.

''Hold it,'' He murmurs.

She sucks her teeth and pushes him off of her.

''Bro!'' He cried out, which caused her to laugh on her way out of bed and to the bathroom conjoined with her bedroom.

While locking the door, she hears Jeff call out to her again. ''Wait, Dev!''

''What?''

''You're bleeding!''

She furrows her brows and looks down at her sweats. ''What?'' She whispers while turning herself to look at the bottom part of her sweats. Turns out, there was a whole blood spot from her period staining the material.

''Awe, fuck,'' She murmurs to herself.

Surely enough, with how big the spot was, she's definitely marked her spot on the sheets of the bed.

There was then a knock on the door. ''Babe..'' His voice was much softer and much more clearer. He was standing in front of the door from the outside. ''I'm gonna go wash the bed spread. You want me to get you, your extra clothes?''

She opens the door and let's a sigh fall from her lips. She leans against the door frame and requests, ''Yeah, and can you do me a favor while I take a shower? Can you get me some pads?''

''Of course,'' He simply nods while lifting a hand to behind her head, pulling her close to plant a lingering kiss on her temple. ''You want me to get you anything else while I'm out?''

She pursed her bottom lip and shakes her head. ''No, I'm good. Thank you, hun.''

''No problem, mi reina.''

''Awe!'' Hannah gushed when she caught the sight of Devin walking down the stairs in a new pair of pajamas from her spot on the couch. Her hair that was blown dry after being washed was tied up into a bun while the brunette, herself, was rubbing her eyes. ''I heard your time of the month kicked in?''

''Shh,'' She playfully hissed while landing the bottom level of the cabin. She dropped her arm to her side and asks as she looks around, ''Where's Matt and Clay?''

Jeff looks away from the tv, he was currently scrolling through channels for any good movies that were on for the hour. ''They're out back playing football.''

''I'm sorry, what?'' She cranes her neck forward. Devin plopped onto the couch in between Jeff and Hannah. Hannah was nodding her head along the counterpoint of that statement. ''I know right?''

''But Clay doesn't do sports,'' Devin shakes her head vigorously.

Jeff shrugs his shoulders, switching from MTV2 to VH1 where they were playing Madea's Halloween. ''I was on my way out when Matthew had asked. He didn't want to wait for me to come back so he got Clay.''

Devin pouts at him with a humerus glint sparkling in her eye. ''Awe. Is someone feeling a sort of way because he's no longer the spotlight in my baby brothers eyes?''

He snickers. ''Never that.''

Hannah giggles along with Devin just as the boys had walked in through the kitchen. Clay had entered with rough patches of dirt stains marking his pasty skin while Matthew walked in clean as a whistle. He held the football in one hand while the other held a water bottle.

The girls were already gaping quietly before Jeff turns and snorts. ''Holy shit. What happened?''

Clay narrows his eyes at the trio, his voice lower than usual. ''Nothing,'' A satisfied sigh falls from his lips as he plops into a separate chair across from them. ''Just a regular and progressive game of football.''

Hannah lugs her head to the side to find Matthew standing behind the couch where she sat. ''Progressive, how?''

''As in Clay was total trash because he doesn't know how to play,'' He takes a swing of his water before furrowing his brows. ''And he's a sore loser.''

''I am not!''

''Yeah, you are,'' Devin perks up while speaking simultaneously with Matthew. She turns to those around her and explains, ''We played a game of ping pong in gym and because I was winning, the kid goes and hits the ball, not towards me- no, he goes and throws it to the side over the net so he can think he get's a point, when really, it was an overall foul.''

''I don't approve of your fan behavior.''

Her eyes went wide as she goes to look back at him. ''What?''

It was hard for Jeffery Atkins, Matthew Greene and Hannah Baker to cooperate in Devin's offense throughout all the laughter.

''What are we doing today, guys?'' Hannah abruptly asks around.

Matthew shrugs his shoulders. ''Nothing. Devin's monthly killed the whole mood.''

The brunette's features dropped as she leans forward to turn in her seat to face her younger brother. ''How does my period kill the mood? I'm the one bleeding through my vagina.''

''Ugh,'' Jeff cringed. ''Save the gory details, please?''

Devin raised her hands in defense. ''All I'm saying is you guys could plan something for the day. You don't have to stay stuck in the house with me.''

''Not everything's about you Dev,'' Clay looks away dramatically. ''Jeez. We just don't know what to do.''

''Well,'' She emits a short strangled groan from her throat as she leans forward, resting her elbow on her knees. ''You guys could head downtown, where the board walk is at? They have like a whole arcade you could try out.''

''Oh my god, please tell me we're going?'' Matthew practically begged, jumping in his spot.

Hannah furrows her brows at her. ''You want take out?''

''Yes,'' She eagerly nods. ''They have a Steak 'N Shake around there, you know.''

Jeff furrows his browns and murmurs from the thought, ''Steak 'N Shake?''

Devin and Matthew swiftly turn to to him with their lips falling into a gape. ''You never had Stake 'N Shake?''

He shakes his head, curious as ever. ''I never even heard of it.''

''Oh, yeah,'' Matthew nods his head. ''We're definitely getting it.''

Devin flattens her lips into a straight line and pats her boyfriend's knee, encouraging a small, ''Have fun,'' before getting up from her spot on the couch and heading for the kitchen.

Her bare feet stampeded across the wooden flooring and rounded the corner and to the refrigerator. She wraps a hand around the bottom handle and opens it open, leaning her torso down to get a better view of what was inside.

She stands back up straight when she hears Matthew crying out, ''Oh, you've got to be kidding me!''

From her furrowed brows, her countenance calmed once she witnessed Jeffery Atkins walking into the kitchen.

He stands on the opposite end of the island and leans his forearms against the surface. ''I got the purple bag of Doritios in case you want something to munch on.''

She smiles softly at him, taking a step forward and closing the door behind her. ''What was all that about?''

He mimicked her smile. ''I'm staying here with you.''

Her smile drops in almost an instant as she pleads, ''What? No, Jeff, go with them.''

''I don't want to.''

She folds her arms across her chest and frowns. ''Why not? And I better not be a reason for it.''

He scoffs. ''Sue me, then. Because you're the reason why.''

Her head falls the side. ''Jeff-''

''It's fine,'' He assures. He pushes himself off of the island and makes his way around the corners till he was standing in front of her. ''I want to be here to care for you, whether you need a message, a quick supply run to a bodega, even when you just want to cuddle.''

She threw her head back smiling wide. ''I really don't deserve you.''

× × ×

''Shit,'' Jeff hissed while Devin giggles. Pitch Perfect was playing on the screen, however, the couple couldn't care less of what was on because they sat on the couch, facing each other. Devin Greene and Jeff Atkins had one leg folded while the other was laying past one another's hips.

They were playing hand games from back as kids.

They were currently on Mama Can't You See.

''One more time and then we'll do numbers,'' Devin finalized, but Jeff quickly disregarded.

''If we play numbers, we'll never get past one.''

Devin threw her head back with laughter. ''It's okay, I have the same issues.''

''That was literally how I first met Clay.''

Devin perks at the sudden memory mentioned. ''Really?''

''Yeah.'' The baseball player was practically lost in a daze with a happily smile sketching from both corners of his lips. ''In second grade, do you remember when all the classes had this low key competition with numbers because they were saying-''

''Whoever was the fastest and reached the highest number was considered the smartest,'' Devin nods her head. ''I remember. Even though we all knew we weren't smart.''

''People still wanted to see if they were.''

''Yeah,'' She giggles.

''I always saw him sitting in the back of the class, nobody really included him the game, So I did,'' He chuckles softly. ''He was so fast with it, I couldn't even catch up with him from the second it started.''

She couldn't help but admire the Latino in front of her. He was absolutely compassionate, honest and was his own person. It warmed her to know that even at a young age, he held morals similar to this day.

''How'd you stay friends?''

That's when he starts laughing. ''I told him that as the dumb kid, I need a smart friend. Like Batman and Robin.''

''If this is you're way of starting up another conversation as to why Batman is a lame, you're in over your head, Jeff.''

He pursed his lips. ''Go ahead, we could go over why Captain America is such a lame.''

''Yikes, but doesn't Captain America have a bigger fan base?''

''Anyways..''

Devin rubs her hand against the fabric of her leggings and drawls in a long inhales, ''Do you wanna play Uno? Or do you have a sappy story on how you lost your long lost brother name Juan in a game of Uno?''

''Haha,'' He flatly mocks. ''Keep joking like that and watch me really have a long lost brother.''

''Ooh,'' She smirks. ''On a scale from one to ten, how much better looking is he compared to you.''

''Juan would be in the negatives.''

Devin's laughter was cut short when a pain went through her lower abdomen. ''Ow,'' She hissed, holding onto the bloated end of her stomach.

He furrows his brows. ''Everything all right?''

She shakes her head. ''I need to go lay down.''

As she stands up from the couch, sliding away from Jeff's touch, he questions, ''You want me to come-''

She uses a free hand to hold up to him, shushing him immediately. ''God, no. It's too hot and I need my space.''

He tilts his head to the side. ''There's an air conditioner in the room.''

She cocks her head to the side while limping towards the set of stairs. ''Which I will gladly enjoy alone.''

He slants his lips to the side. ''What if I wanna lay down?''

''Do it on the couch!''

Lifting herself onto that first step, she rolls her eyes at another one of Jeff protests, ''But-''

''But,'' She repeats. ''If you come into that bed, I swear to the strength of God in me, I will kick you off.''
