↷ TWENTY ONE
''Ooh!''
Hannah Baker leaned against the brick railing set on both end of the wide steps in front of Liberty High's entrance, while Jeff Atkins had stood up straight on one side of Hannah with Devin Greene's back stood close in front of his torso. Clay Jensen stood on the other side of Hannah with a smile sketched on his lips, his eyes squinted more than usual given the beaming sun was shining bright over them that Wednesday morning.
Devin, Jeff and Hannah however had ecstatic grins plastered on their features when they saw Kat arrive with her hair done straight, dressed in white Thrasher tee that was most likely a size bigger than her usual considering the shirt looked a little baggy as she wore a pair of ripped light wash denim shorts, and a black pair of Nike's on her feet.
''Somebody got my text this morning,'' Hannah prompts, peering the wandering eye over at Devin to throw some shade.
Hannah had texted the girls that the first rule of Bad Bitches Expedition, they had to go all out with their outfits for these final weeks, something they wouldn't consider wearing on a regular.
Waving her off, Devin assures, ''People won't even be able to tell.''
Hannah wore an olive green t-shirt dress that curved around her hips and gladiator sandals tied around her feet. Her hair wasn't in it's usual state, instead it was it was twisted into French braids.
It was the most rarest item Hannah had found in her closet that morning.
Devin had her hair tied up in the biggest sloppiest bun at the back of her head with a pair of grey suede Pumas on her feet that didn't seem to entirely match with the red jersey dress with the number 99 printed on it. She had a denim jacket barely hangs on her shoulders.
''Alright, we get it, you guys look good,'' Clay ushered. His features were twisted as he had a hand covering his sift from the blazing sun, but it wasn't enough. ''Can we go now?''
× × ×
Kat sat in her third period class that day, her seat around the middle of the right side of the room, where the windows were.
Her AP English teacher went on and on about the symbolic aspects of Othello and decoding Shakespeare's ancient language.
She had an elbow propped on the wooden desk and her chin resting in the palm of ber hand, her other hand bouncing the eraser end of her pencil against the surface of her desk as Mr. Edwin lectured, ''The handkerchief, for example, holds Desdemoda's fatality. Right?''
Mr. Edwin turned away from his chalkboard and scanned the room to find majority of his students half asleep during the lesson.
The man himself was around his late forties with a bald scalp and dark grey hair running along the side his head. He wore a quart sleeve thinly printed plaid shirt with three different hues to it. Green, black and orange. The button down shirt was tucked in his brown dressed pants, but it looked like the buttons on his shirt or the belt buckle holding everything together wouldn't last with how tight it was stretched from his belly.
''Come on guys,'' He encourages. ''One more chapter and we'll be done with this.''
''Is there gonna be a essay after this?'' A random kid from the back of the room piped up.
Mr. Edwin grins. ''Of course.''
The whole class erupted with equally distress groans.
Suddenly, the fire alarm blared all around the building. Though majority of the time the alarm is rung, it's a practice round, the students usually take this as an excuse to be out of class for five to ten minutes and socialize.
But instead of rushing out the classroom as they usually would of, they remained seated when they heard a female screaming from down the hall, ''Fire! There's a fire!''
''Oh-okay, everyone,'' Mr. Edwin stammers out once the news had sunk in, but the teens were already beasting out of their seats. ''Single file line- Guys!''
As Kat followed people out through the front door, she noticed those in the hallway slipping on the floor or trying to hold onto something stable like a wall or a person but failing miserably.
Kat stood in the open doorway as she folds her arms across her chest, mumbling with furrowed brows, ''What the hell?''
Her neck broke when she turned down the hallway when she heard a roar of laughter erupt.
There stood Jeffery Atkins and Devin Greene.
Both ends of her lips twitch into a small smile as she carefully steps around those on the floor towards the two.
''What the hell is all of this?'' She asked.
Devin giggles, ''It's a prank.''
''Dev and I spent first and second filling up those big ass buckets in the equipment room of the gym, store them with water and spilt them on all the floors,'' Jeff explained.
Jeff's gaze shifted and in an instant, he broke out into a high pitch roar of laughter.
''Look at Mr. Edwin,'' He laughs.
Kat turned as her and Devin caught Mr. Edwin trying to hold onto the frame of the door for his classroom while his feet kept slipping himself forward.
''This-'' He blurts out, one foot quickly slipping past the other, losing his balancing second after second. ''This is not a single file line.''
Kat and Devin broke out into laughter, losing their breathes as quickly as Jeff did.
Mr. Edwin however managed to catch his balance outside of his classroom. When he did, he slowly but surely let go of the door frame.
His arms, however, were still out from his side and his breathing was shaky as he looked down, internally praying to not fall.
Mr. Edwin looked up and when he did, his left foot slipped backwards, causing him to leapt forward and from that point, it looked as I he was running but in the same spot.
''Oh my god!'' Devin screeched of laughter. She turns to Jeff breathlessly who was crying into the wall. ''He looks like the Frozone dude from The Incredibles.''
And just as the trio stood at the end of the hall, laughing off a successful prank, it continued that way for the final days of school turned that to weeks.
Whether it was popping into random classroom dressed like zombies with torn outfits and make up exceptionally done by Devin Greene and using the most sexual lines thought of by Kat on the first student of the room they lay their eyes on.
Hannah Baker walked towards a freshman taking an Ecology course and remarked, ''Bust a nut on my ass and make it look like a glazed donut.''
Devin walked up to Zach Dempsey in the art room and says, ''Work those fingers on me like you're playing 2K.'' followed by a wink.
Jeff had walked up to Chelsea Cunnings at her desk in the gymnasium and tells her, ''People use their legs to run laps, I use my tongue.''
Clay even decided to join in on the fun and walked up to Sheri Holland, stuttering his line terribly, ''The um- the word for the hour- I mean day, is legs, so let's go back to your place- or uh, mine, and spread your legs- shit, no. I mean-''
He stops himself and looks at up at Sheri who's features cringed inwardly.
He cocks a brow at her, ''Can I start over?''
Or bringing three balloons to school so suck in the helium and walk up to random people in the middle of a conversation and say, ''Swiper no swiping.''
Clay dropped in his seat next to Jeff while Devin, Hannah and Kat were already settled across from him at the table during their lunch hour.
''I have a headache,'' He informs the group, his high pitch chipmunk voice still present.
''Thats why we do it every two hours, Jensen,'' Kat prompts to the brunette before taking a sip of her Orange flavored Fanta.
Or even letting peers over Facebook and Snapchat know a game that was being played.
''Friday,'' Jeff started his Facebook post. ''Don't forget to bring your water guns for the Wet Games.''
That Friday was a big turn out when the whole day was spent getting shot at by water from a five foot distance and getting water balloons thrown at.
Now came down to the final days, where Devin Greene, Clay Jensen, Hannah Baker, Katherine Williams, and Jeff Atkins were planning the biggest going away party.
Kat was leaving on a Thrusday, and the last day of school was on Wednesday; so was the party.
Hannah slammed her locker shut and turned to the group surrounding her. ''I can't believe the last day of school is tomorrow.''
Devin scoffs, her gaze concentrated on the discolored rust on the locker set next to Hannah's. She leaned into Jeff's side as she comments, ''I know.''
She looks around the group and faintly smirked. ''Time really flew by.''
''Hey,'' Kat calls out, perking their attention. ''No tears yet. We still have, like, seventy two hours left.''
''Technically, it's less than that,'' Clay points. Kat turned her head to the side to eye him flatly.
''Anyway,'' She starts again, she turned to the girls. ''Let's enjoy it while it last.''
''Speaking of last,'' Hannah sparks up a new interest of conversation. ''Last sleepover at my place?''
Devin lifts her head up from Jeff's clothed chest and pouts. ''Why not my place?''
''We never done my place.''
Furrowing her brows, Devin opened and closed her mouth, not entirely sure how to fight back on that one without coming off as a bitch.
''Fine,'' She gives in. ''Meet you guys at lunch?''
The group chants various agreements, indicating that the plan was a done deal before heading off to their first period classes.
