↷ THIRTY THREE

''Hey, you..''

Devin turns to face Jeff Atkins and scoffs up a vague smile. As she wipes away a stray tear, she turns back around and mumbles, ''Hey.''

Devin Greene stood in front of the hospital building that Saturday afternoon.

He takes a step forward. ''Are you okay?''

She shakes her head. ''No.''

''Oh.''

It was another moment of silence, other than the sounds in the streets and the doors sliding open and closing to those coming in and out of the facility.

Jeff lingered until he stood next to her. He was eyeing a piece of chewed up gum stuck on the gravel with furrowed brows and asks, ''What was all that about?''

''My mom has ovarian cancer,'' She simply says. But she could feel the tears building up and her throat burning. ''Her condition wasn't so bad. But they found more tumors outside of the ovaries.'' She rolls her eyes. ''I have no idea what the hell that means, but they say it's bad.'' She turns to look at the boy that was already looking at her and pursed her lips. ''I'm scared.''

''She's going to make it through,'' He encouraged. ''She has you and Matt worth fighting for.''

''Ugh,'' She peers away with a groan. ''Matthew.''

''He must be a wreck.''

She licks her lips that were dry against the lingering summer air. ''He hates me.''

''Hey,'' His head hangs to the side. ''He does not hate you.''

She stares off across the street blankly. ''Yeah, he does. And frankly, I don't blame him.''

''Come on, Dev,'' He raised a brow. ''What makes you think that?''

She remained silent. She knew that once Jeff knew as far as to what Matthew knew, he would hate her too. She even hated herself for what she become.

She blinks out of her zoned out state and and looks down at her shoes. ''You should probably go.''

''Why?''

''Just,-'' She turns to him and furrows her brows. ''trust me. The less you know, the better.''

''For who?'' He continues to question. ''For me or for you?''

Just then, Justin Foley's pick up truck came to a slow stop in front of the hospital with Justin, himself, sitting in the drivers seat. Devin turned to face the angry yet confused Latino. ''Justin and I aren't together in that way. He just knows how to help me.''

''And what can he do that I can't?''

She shakes her head and brought a hand up to his cheek. ''You're so much more, in every possible way.''

Her gaze flickers down to his lips. His soft and plump lips. Closing her eyes, she plants her lips on his for only a few seconds.

''I'll see you around, Jeff Atkins.''

His lips and skin felt cold once she had detached herself from him, running off towards the vehicle. He watched as she slammed the passenger door shut.

''Listen,'' Justin breathes out. ''I know we have our conditions, but-'' He shakes his head. ''You look like shit. I'm giving this one to you for free, on the house.''

''No,'' She looks out of her window, eyeing her rear end mirror. ''No, I know Bryce is expecting some cash in return meaning it'll come out of your wallet.'' She places the five dollar bill in the cup holder between them.

Devin Greene returned to the hospitals with about three drops of eye drops imprinted into both her eyes and drowned in the scent of Vanilla Lace from Victoria's Secret, chewing on two patches of mint gum.

''Hey,'' Her voice was horsed. The sound of her voice caused Matthew and much to her surprise, Jeff turn to her. She furrows her brows down at him. ''You're still here?''

''Of course.''

''Where'd you go?'' Matthew asks, a twitch in his lip signifying his disgust as he eyes her up and down.

''Just..'' She shrugs her shoulders with her hands stuffed in her pockets. ''Out.'' She then sighs. ''How is she? Did anybody come back and tell you anything?''

''No,'' Jeff pursed his lips and in leaned forward in his chair. ''But, it looks like we're about to right now.''

Devin turns to just as Doctor Romero approached. ''You're Devin Greene, Alyssa's daughter, correct?''

''Yes,'' She nods her head. ''Is she okay?''

His lips perked up into a smile. ''The surgery was a success. Though, she was under a lot these past couple of hours so you can't see her right now while she's in the critical care unit.''

''Oh,'' She nods her head, comprehending the situation. ''That's fine. Can we be able to see her tomorrow?''

''Of course.''

''Great,'' She breathes out a tired smile. ''Thank you so much.''

''I'm glad we could help.''

As he walks off, Devin turns around to Jeffery Atkins and Matthew Greene with droopy eyes. ''She's going to be okay,'' She repeats softly.

''Maybe I should drive you guys home?'' Jeff offers when taking a stand from his seat.

''No,'' Devin rubs her head. ''No, it's fine. How else are you supposed to get home?''

He waves her off. ''I can walk home. Besides, you can barely walk because of how tired you are.''

''But,-''

''Oh my god, hand him the damn keys and lets go,'' Matthew exclaims.

''Wow,'' Jeff breathes out after Matthew rushed out of the car and slammed the door shut roughly behind him. ''You were not kidding. He's really mad.''

Her chest heaves into a dry chuckle as she looks away while rolling her eyes.

''Listen,'' She looks back at him and digs her head into the seat. ''Thanks for being there for me today. That was a lot to go through considering where we stand.''

''Devs,'' He shakes his head. ''How come you didn't call up Zach? You guys seemed to have gotten close over the summer.''

She scrunched her lips to the side. ''Zach is like an older brother. You know, I definitely trust him but I don't feel like we're close enough to reach this level. You-'' She licks her lips, her tone dropping a few volumes. ''You were already there.''

''I always want to be there for you, Devin,'' He assures softly.

She remained silent for a brief moment before speaking. ''It was nice seeing you today, Jeff.''

She gets out the car herself, allowing her trust in Jeff's hand to lock the car himself and find his own way home.
