↷ THIRTY SEVEN
''Kim Kardashian wasn't always sexy.''
''No,'' Marcus barks at Justin, pointing an accusing finger at him before exclaiming, ''Kylie wasn't always sexy!''
Devin Greene sat with Zach Dempsey, Marcus Cole, Bryce Walker and Justin Foley that Thursday afternoon in the cafeteria. She was originally here for Zach, yet, unfortunately, this was crowd. Though, she did hang out when those when necessary, it didn't mean she much enjoyed their company.
Her chin was rested in her hand that was propped against the table. Her dull brown eyes traveled along the moving beans on her plate.
Apparently, the Kardashian was the hourly topic.
''Kylie had the potential,'' Bryce argues.
Zach's features tightened into a cringe. ''No she didn't!''
''Guys,'' Justin waved his hands out. ''Can we just agree that they both came out looking like a fish?''
Devin rolls her eyes at the madness Justin created at the table. No wonder Kat was always running around. She would've too if she dated one of these bafoons.
Dropping her spork on her plate, she gets up with her tray to toss out the food she never bothered to taste.
She turned around once she tossed the tray in the garbage bin and stopped herself in her tracks at the sight of Hannah Baker eating by herself.
Besides two other people who sat on the opposite end as her, the table was completely empty.
Devin purses her lips and cling her clasped hands against her clothed stomach.
She needed to talk to her at one point. She owes it to Hannah after avoiding her for all this time.
But what if Hannah didn't want to be bothered? What if her acts were unforgivable?
A loud whistle was heard in the cafeteria, breaking Devin Greene from her thoughts.
''A fine dime, right?'' A male voice compliments. There was a satisfy hum that followed along the lines of that comment.
The brunette turns her head to find an entire end of a table dedicated to a crowd of freshman boys. More importantly, the leader of this pack, was displaying a sparkling million dollar smile her way. He was known as Caleb Otero.
''I thought I told you, I'm not interested?'' She questions aloud, turning her body to face him and sliding her arms to fold against her chest.
''Trust me, sweetheart-''
She shakes her head with a cringe. ''Don't call me that.''
''I intend to turn my dreams into a reality.''
''Awe,'' She pouts. ''I really do hate to burst your bubble, but in the real world, you don't always get what you want.''
He only smirks at her response. ''I like to think otherwise.''
Devin was fuming. As flattering as this was, there was a fine line of boundaries, and it was clear that the boy is as blind as a bat if he couldn't see that line.
''Woah there!''
Her chest felt lighter when she exhales her breath that she didn't even realize she was holding when she turn and found Tony approaching the scene.
''Do we have a problem here-'' He placed his hand on the small of her back and gave a warning look. ''babe?''
A snicker almost slipped from her. She turns back to the boys who leaned back with disappointed. Caleb was eyeing Tony with wide eyes.
''Not at all,'' She grins.
Tony extends his free arm out, indicating for her to walk away, which is exactly what she did, and he made sure to stay by her side.
''Wait till they find out you're gay,'' Tony turns to find Devin grinning at her.
''The freshman?'' He points a thumb back at the group. ''Nah.''
Her laughter was cut short when she had realized too little too late that she had approached her old table. There, Jeff and Clay sat in their regular seats while Tony walked around her to take his seat across from them.
''Oh,'' She clears her throat. ''Hey.''
''Hey,'' Jeff smiles.
She nods at Clay Jensen, acknowledging his presence and his wide eye stare. ''Hi Clay.''
''Hey,'' He mumbles. He was kind of hurt that Devin was only speaking to him now. Did it only need to depend on her status with Jeff in order for her to talk to him anymore?
Ignoring his troubled thoughts, he scoffs up a smirk. ''It sucks we don't have the same gym period anymore.''
She nods her head. ''To be honest. I don't have a target to hit during volleyball anymore.''
They smile at one another. God, did she really make the mistake of shutting everyone out.
''So, uh,'' Jeff blurts out, diverting the attention back onto him. ''What was all that back there?''
She mustered a faux grin. ''Tony saving me from a wild horny pack of ninth graders. Which, thank you, by the way.''
Tony lifts his hands up in defense. ''Hey, I was doing them a favor. It looked like you were about ready to splatoon each one of them like a game of whack a mole.''
She giggles at his analogy.
''I, uh, hope I see you guys at tomorrow's game.''
''We kind of have of have no choice,'' Clay shrugs his shoulders, folding his arms on the edge of the table. ''Coach Patrick assigned the game for homework since it's the first basketball game of the season.''
''Awe, Clay,'' Devin giggles. ''I admire your tedious void of not breaking the rules.''
He furrows his brows. ''What?''
Jeff chuckles. ''Dude, Coach is gonna be so focused on his boys, he's not gonna care who's there and who's not.''
Clay Jensen flattens his lips into a straight line and nods his head. ''Thanks for putting me on the spot, guys. I literally feed off of this humiliation.''
''It's all from love, darling,'' Devin grins. She laughs along with Tony and Jeff as she scans the cafeteria. However, her bubbly spirits faltered immediately when Hannah was no longer at her spot.
''Hey, um,'' Devin lifts a finger up to her bottom lip and mentally debates whether to wrestle the topic aloud. ''Have any of you spoken to Hannah since.. you know-''
''No,'' Clay shakes his head. ''She ghosted as good as you did.''
''Really?'' She furrows her brows. ''She hasn't even bumped into you? Nothing?'' They only shake their heads. ''Clay, you work with her?''
''She doesn't speak to me.''
''Oh,'' She mumbles.
Tony raised a brow. ''Have you talked to her?''
''I don't know how,'' She simply tells him. ''How do you try to rekindle a friendship after shutting them out for three months?''
Clay tilts his head to the side. ''You did it to me.''
''You're different,'' She waves him off. ''I didn't slam a door in your face.''
It was at once that the boys hissed and winced.
''That's mean,'' Jeff pouts.
''Yeah, no shit captain Atkins.''
