↷ THIRTY ONE

''One hour-''

Ms. Wisnewski fixes his belt buckle before dropping into the seat of the spinning computer chair. ''No talking and no laughing. This hour is spent to reflect on whatever horrid actions you caused today.''

Devin had her chin resting in her hand as she rolls her eyes. Mr. Wisnewski was a man who was around his sixties, possibly mere seventies. It was a miracle that the students haven't given him a heart attack, much less convinced him to retire already.

It wasn't a full five minutes before he fell asleep with his head hanging back and his mouth gaping apart to allow the obnoxious row of snores bounce off of the walls of the quiet classroom.

Jeffery Atkins sat in the row next to Devin's, but two seats back. He kept eyeing the back of her head with his fingers tapping against the wooden desk nervously.

Clearly, he didn't think too far into the plan. So far, he's been winging it.

How do you approach someone that was once approachable?

''Damn it,'' She hissed. Devin looks up from her phone to those who were also sitting in the detention room with her. But there wasn't that many students. ''Does anyone have a charger on them?''

The three other kids in the class shook their heads and return to their device, allowing Devin to sulk in her seat.

''Uh,'' He sputters out. ''I have one.''

Which wasn't an entire lie, he had the wire and the box outlet sitting in his book bag.

Devin didn't even bother to turn to him when scoffing. She stuffs her phone in her pocket and then folds her arms on the table, resting her head on them.

As she was going down, Jeff couldn't help the silent pleads in his head, 'Please don't arch your back, please don't arch your back, plea-'

As a natural flex of her body, that Devin, herself couldn't control nor much knew about, her back arched when resting her head. Even her shirt rose a little, exposing a small portion of skin that allowed cold air to hit her skin.

Devin removed an arm to lower her shirt down.

There goes winging it. Devin had left Jeff no choice but to limit himself down to plan b.

He rises from his seat and carries the chair over to where Devin sat.

The brunette sat up just as he dropped into the metal chair planted next to her.

Devin remained unresponsive as she laid back down, turning her head to face the windows. It was going to take a lot more than sitting next to her to get under her skin.

''Did you hear about Drake cancelling his Summer Sixteen tour?''

She rolls her eyes. It was pathetic, really. Was that all he had?

''Remember when we had first planned to see him?''

Her heart made a small dip. Whenever they were together, it was more than likely for the two to listen to at least one song from Drake. It was their thing.

''We never really had things planned,'' He rubs his moist palms against the fabric of his jeans nervously. God, it was so hard to talk to her. ''We let things flow. Like when we first became friends? Even though,-''

It took everything in her not sit up and turn to him with furrowed brows. She couldn't give him this satisfaction, he's the one that hurt her, not the other way around. He deserves her silent treatment. She deserves to move on.

''Even though, I think we both knew we'd be more than that,'' He mumbles. He then pursed his lips. ''Remember when you came to school really late and I took you out for lunch just to make you feel better? And made silly faces over our frappicinos? Or when you came to the first game of the season and you cheered for me?''

What did he want from her?

His voice dropped into a whisper, as if he was spilling a dangerous secret no one else could hear. ''Remember when we were a dating?''

Jeff Atkins heart broke in two when Devin Greene finally sat up and faced him. But it wasn't the reaction he was expecting. It was far from it. He was expecting for her to yell at him, for her to go away and to stop fighting for her.

Instead, her eyes were bloodshot with tears pooling at her sacks, creating a salty streak against her cheeks.

''Remember when you hurt me, Jeff Atkins?'' She hissed. She cocks her head to the side and shrugs her shoulders. ''Or maybe you don't. Because you weren't here for that part.''

He was left with his mouth hanging open while she was rushing herself out of her seat.

She had stormed out of the classroom with a hand pressed against her mouth, suppressing the chest wrecking sobs that were urging to come out. Was he happy seeing her like this? Why did he say all of that?

''Devin, I-''

Devin turns sharply and points an accusing finger at him. ''Get away from me.''

The door to the detention room closed shut, the small click echoing in the empty school hallways.

''No-''

''Why not?'' She slaps her arms against her sides. ''That was real easy for you to do when you broke up with me.''

His weight dropped on one hip while the other leg was propped out. ''I guess I deserved that one.''

''Argh!'' She walks across the hall with one hand weaving through the roots of her hair. She turns to him and questions, ''Why? Why did you break up with me? Is it because you lost feelings? Was I not enough for you anymore? Was I too complicated? What was wrong with me that made you leave?''

He pressed a hand against his clothed chest. ''Devin,'' He shakes his head, stepping closer to her ever so slowly. ''It wasn't you. That was all me.''

Her jaw clenched. ''You did not just quote the worst break up line in the history of break ups.''

He threw his arms from his side. ''It's because it's true.''

She stomps one foot out and drops her weight on one hip, folding her arms and narrowing her eyes at the Latino. ''And what about you, Jeff, was the problem?''

''I-'' He shakes his head vigorously. ''I don't know if I can say.''

''So you have the damn nerves,'' She takes a bold step forward. ''The damn balls, matter of fact, to approach me and reminisce on what we used to be, but can't owe me the simple explanation of why you broke up with me?''

''I want to Devin, but-'' He choked on his own words. ''I felt like things were going to go south any way if I had told you.''

''Oh my god,'' She gapes at him. ''Did you cheat on me?''

He cranes his neck forward and squints his eyes at her. ''What?'' He jerks back and his eyes blew wide open. ''No! No, I would never do that to you.''

''I wouldn't think you would do a lot of things to me, Jeff,'' She shrugs her shoulder. ''But shit happens.''

''Devin,'' As he takes a step forward, she takes a step back. ''No amount of apologizing or pleading could make you forgive me at this very moment, but I miss you. I didn't know how to handle everything, but I knew that the longer we were dating, the more pain I was going to put you through.''

''Jeff,'' She desperately breathes out. ''I was practically on my knees, begging for you to tell me what was wrong. I meant it when I said I was willing to make things work, I had faith in us.''

He raised a brow down at her. ''Do you still?''

Her shoulders drooped and her features seemed to drop. This whole time, she's been focused on moving on, finding herself again throughout all the madness of emotions.

But, yet, Jeff was the one who gave up when the going got tough. Were they really that strong for one another?

''I do,'' She breathes out. Her breathing hitched when a simple touch landed on her arm. ''But,-'' She shakes her head. ''I went from talking to you every single day, to walking past you in the hallways as strangers. Maybe-''

Her voice dropped another octave when he took another step closer.

They were standing in the middle of the empty corridor and it still felt like Devin Greene had no space to breathe. She could smell his cologne with every inhale. He had his usual scent, which was faint against his stained t-shirt. Old Spice.

''Maybe we outgrew each other,'' She whispers. She remained eye contact with him, but it only grew intense the longer they stood this close to each other.

''You're blushing.''

''Congratulations,'' She huffs. ''You have observation skills. But that doesn't answer my question.''

''Which was?''

His hands managed to slip past her and grip onto her waist. This was it, even she didn't keep her ground and fight for what she wanted, she would easily cave in.

And the last thing Devin wants is an endless cycle with no lesson learned. There needs to be a change.

''Why did you leave me?''

His eyes flutter shut and he dropped his head. His forehead pressed against hers while she was looking up at him with wide eyes.

''The night before Kat's graduation,'' He gives her sides a squeeze. ''Kat called me and she told me that Justin Foley is in love with you.''

Her voice pronounced stern. ''What?''

''She told me that Justin had fell in love with this girl that never bothered to look his way. The only time that she has, was when they first kissed.''

She shakes her head. ''Okay, but that's Justin. What does this have to do with us?''

''I thought that.. erm..'' His voice trailed off.

''Oh my god,'' Her head fell into his chest. ''You thought that Justin and I had or could gain something and I would have left you.''

She pulls away from him and pulls a strand of hair behind her ear. ''Jeff,'' She let's a struggled groan.

''I didn't want to get hurt again, Devin,'' He shakes his head. ''I thought pushing you away was the best option.''

He was surprised when she stood in front of him again, but with her small hands cupping his face. ''I get that, but you can't always pin against me whenever you hear my name in the mix of another boy. You know I cooperate better with honesty, and because that was missing, we crashed. We went through-'' She inhales deeply while saying, ''so much pain that could have been easily avoided.''

''I'm sorry.''

She smiled sadly. ''I am too.'' She rubbed the pad of her thumb against his cheekbone. ''It takes two to tango, Atkins.''

''Friends?''

She looks up at him and began to think to herself. She was actually surprised that he took control of the situation and decided where to leave things, considering his insecurities that continue to reveal. Though, she was disappointed that he was asking to start off as friends.

Did he not want more? Or would it be better to start from the bottom rather than at the top?

She nods her head. ''Friends.''

The door to the detention room open and one of the girls from inside peeked outside. Her name was Savannah.

''Wisneski keeps wobbling around,'' She cocks her head to the side. ''You better get in here before he gets up.''
