↷ FORTY NINE
''Your car needs a wash?''
Jeffery Atkins exits his parked vehicle with a grin that mid morning on a Saturday. He folds his arm across his chest and shrugs his shoulders. ''Is it that hard to believe?''
She mocks his stance, a playful grin playing on her lips while holding her head high. ''I think this is just an excuse to see me half naked and wet.''
Devin Greene refrains herself from reacting by his tentative steps he took closer towards her. Even when his calloused hands gripped her hips firmly, pulling her closer to him, she kept her composure calm.
He leaned down and lightly grazed his plump lips against her ear and mumbles in a sultry tone, ''I get to see you like that any time I want. And it's even better because I'm the one causing the damage.''
There goes any correlation to being calm.
His breath made her ears turn red instead of her cheeks which he had noticed immediately.
Despite the wicked smirk on his lips, she tells him, ''We'll have your car spotless, sir.''
She pushed him away from his grasp and headed over to Sheri Holland, the brunette slouched over her clipboard listed with names to the people that donated so far.
''Hey,'' She breathes out. ''Jeff came.''
Sheri scoffs a smile. ''Figured.'' She looks up with a soft smile. ''We can always count on your man for coming through.''
''Yeah,'' She agrees, rubbing her sweaty palms against her heated thighs. Coincidentally, the Saturday meant for a car wash wasn't exactly one of the colder weekends.
''Listen, Hannah Baker was here for five minutes and nobody bothered to wash her car,'' She tilts her head to the side, practically begging her to do the job. ''Can you do it?''
''Of course,'' She simply complies.
''Ugh,'' She throws her head back. She grips her arm with her free hand and smiles. ''You are amazing. Thank you.''
Devin giggles in response, waving her off before approaching Hannah's vehicle. The owner, herself was sitting on a bench near by her car, just watching the rays of the sun bouncing off of it's reflection.
Most cars that came in today were already clean.
But, school support. Am I right?
''Wow,'' Devin comments, running her hands along front of the vehicle. Hannah looked up with wide eyes. She didn't expect, of all cheerleaders to clean her car for it to be her. Is this what happens when you show school spirit?
''This is in pretty good condition,'' She compliments. She shoots her a friendly grin to receive a small forced one in return.
''Anything specific?'' Hannah furrows her brows. ''Anything you want me to clean?''
''Uh,'' She shakes her head. ''This was a mistake. I'm gonna go.''
Devin's features slowly faltered as she got up from her seat. She placed the bills of regular payment in her hand before walking around her and getting into her car.
After Hannah left the premises, Devin was still standing in the same spot with her jaw hanging only by a little and her money still in her grasp.
Was she too straightforward? Did she say the wrong thing? Was she not straightforward? What the hell happened?
''Hey.''
Devin turns around to find Clay Jensen dressed down more casual than he usually does on a regular school day. ''Clay,'' She forced a small smile. ''Hey.''
He furrows his brows. ''Are you okay?''
Devin inhaled deeply. As much as she worries for Hannah, wondering if she ever missed her, if she wasn't a good enough friend to her, she made it seem as if she was doing better off without her. In reality, maybe she really was. There was no point over obsessing on what if's.
She exhales a grin. ''Yeah.'' She walks up to him and slings an arm around his arm. They began to walk side by side. ''Are you also here for the boob exposure?''
× × ×
Silent.
Nothing, but absolute silence running throughout the whole house. It was eerie and quite awkward. Especially when you have Matthew Greene and Caleb Otero sitting in Matthew's living room while Devin was helping out at the car wash and his mother back at work.
''Can you speak?'' Matthew blurts out.
Caleb furrows his brows and shakes his head. ''Why couldn't we just talk about this in your room?''
''I wouldn't trust that.''
''Look,'' Caleb sighs. ''I honestly don't know if I'm into guys.''
Matthew scoffs. ''You kissed me.''
''But I'm into girls.''
Matthew rolls his eyes. ''The term is called bisexual.''
''I'm not bi!'' He exclaims. ''Not tri, not ti, I am straight.''
''Is-'' He narrows his eyes at him, the confidence in his voice rattling him as he questions, ''is there really a problem? With being into guys?'' He was leaned forward, his arm propped on his knees and his hands folded.
''I'm just not into that,'' He simply responds. But his tense shoulders and scrunched brows told him differently. If he wasn't going to be bold about it, Matthew was.
''Well, I am into that,'' He shrugs his shoulders. ''You got a problem with that?''
''No you're not,'' He chuckles dryly. ''Weren't you fawning over Hannah Baker?''
He shakes his head. ''What I felt for Hannah doesn't compare to how I really feel.''
Caleb craned his neck forward. The conversation was leaving unsettling nerves in the pit of his stomach. He had no control over what was happening, and it was starting to become a little overwhelming.
''As to what?''
His head fell to the side. ''Don't make me spit it out.'' He turns his head to the side to look at him. ''Caleb-''
''Matt-''
''I like you.''
He shakes his head. ''No.''
''Yes,'' He leans up, getting furious at the fact he was denying him. ''I know you're into me too, you're just scared.''
''I'm not scared. I'm just not gay,'' He bluntly states.
Matthew cocks a brow. ''So if I were to kiss you right now, you're gonna punch me?''
''Yes!''
Caleb wasn't quick to notice Matthew's small preparation of licking his lips before boldly swooning in and smashing his lips against his. His hand had reached his face when he had felt Caleb's lips remain still.
The kiss lasted for only a few more lingering seconds before Matthew pulls away. But he didn't pull away entirely. His lips had hovered above Caleb's, his eyes still closed while he was just staring at him. He had to feel his stare.
Matthew's gaze found it's way to his eyes, and it wasn't until the dawn of embarrassment started washing over him. He just kissed his closes guy friend after he admitted his first move was only a mistake.
Matthew began to lean back until Caleb followed after. His lips were like a magnet, because soon as he moved, Caleb followed collided his lips on his once more.
And this kiss was for sure different.
Emotions were on the line,- No. Out on the table for display. There was passion in this one that made it difficult for Matthew to sit still.
Caleb Otero knew the process wasn't going to be easy. He couldn't be as confident with his sexuality as much as Matthew could. But that must be what was so alluring about him. His confidence was inspiring, you just can't help but try to find some in yourself.
''Woah!''
Devin slaps a hand against Jeff's eyes just as he follows up behind her. She then covers her eyes as well with her free arm given that her hand had her keys in it.
Matthew and Caleb quickly pull away from one another to look at the door.
''Sorry,'' Devin cringed. ''On the bright side, we can call it even for when you walked in on Jeff and I.''
Jeff furrows his brows, slightly pouting as he wonders who in the living hell she could be talking to that's in the living room. He removes her hand and found Matthew and Caleb staring back at them.
He places her hand back on his eyes.
''By all means, continue. You guys can't get pregnant so there's nothing to worry about.''
Devin drops her both of her arms as she turns to him incredulously. ''Oh, for fuck sake, Jeff.''
