''Do you see her?''

Jeff had shrugged his shoulders. ''Maybe she made a friend already.''

Her naturally wavy brunette locks shifted vastly when looking back at him with her chewed up french fried stuffing one of her cheeks. ''Yeah, and that's me.''

He shook his head, a small smile hinting at his lips. ''I don't understand. Why do you want to be her friend so badly?''

Throughout the crowded cafeteria, Devin kept scanning through the various faces around her for a particular one she met at the supermarket. ''Because, it would be nice to know someone who hasn't gotten corrupted by the dicks of this school.''

He slapped a hand against his chest and faked a playful gasp. ''What about me?''

She lugged her head to the side, her lips curving into a cheeky grin. ''Besides you, of course.''

''Yeah,'' He mumbled tauntingly in agreement as the two leaned over to place a chaste kiss. She watched his features when they had pulled away, noticing his smile dropped when asking, ''Can I have a fry?''

She cocked a brow at him.

''You made me hungry for one.''

Devin had shook her head and pushed her tray towards the center, between the two, allowing him to take as many as he pleased.

''Mm,'' He hummed when he plopped one in his mouth. His arm was raised when he called out, ''Yo, Clay!''

Devin had propped an elbow on the edge of the table and her chin was rested in the palm of her hand. She had turned when Jeff had called out for him, finding the pasty brunette making his way towards the outside, where there were more seats to eat at lunch.

He had stopped in his fast tracks and took a second to find the face to match the voice, but it didn't take long until he did.

Jeff was waving him over while Devin had shown off a friendly smile, which made it all the more welcoming for him to come over.

''I have been summoned, for?'' Clay had questioned once he had approached. He took a seat next to Jeff, leaving an awkward void of uneven space next to Devin.

''Devin's new little friend might come sit with us and just so I won't feel left out,'' He pats his arm. ''I'll have you.''

''It would be nice to know that you guys just like my company.''

Shaking her head, Devin grins softly at him and reaches out for him .''Never feel underappreciated, darling.''

''But, uh,'' Shrugging his shoulders, Clay had turned to Jeff. ''Who's the mysterious friend?''

Before Jeff was able to answer the question, Devin had open her mouth to drag out a dramatic gasp when the same frizzy curly hair brunette appeared in the open aisle of the cafeteria with a tray settled in her grasp, wandering around as if some lost puppy.

''Hannah!''

Her gaze had instantly interlocked with Devin Greene and those accompanied with her at the table. Feeling a wave of relief wash over the fear of anxiety, she felt a lot more calmer knowing her first day wouldn't be so lonely.

She had walked over and took the available seat next to Devin.

''Oh thank god,'' She breathes out when she had sat down. She pulled a strand behind her ear and spoke, ''Nothing is more terrifying than not knowing where to sit on your first day.''

''Uh, what about Clowns?'' Clay had countered.

Devin and Jeff had jerked their heads to the side with furrowed brows, wondering where the hell that came from.

Hannah kept the small smile on her plump lips, refraining herself from furrowing her brows at Clay Jensen, who created the oddest first impression for himself.

''What?'' She chuckles.

''This is Clay Jensen,'' Devin had introduced. ''His weird atmosphere is his way of trying to be good friend.''

Hannah pursed her lips. ''Then, I guess Clowns can be a little scary. You know, with all the pounds of makeup, they even move a little funny.''

Clay points a finger at her, a grin hinting at both corners of his lips. ''Like the movie, It?''

''Yeah,'' She chuckles, nodding along with him.

Silence then fell upon them, causing Clay to bounce his leg repeatedly under the table and fidget with his fingers on top of it, while Hannah brought a spork along her pile of food, tossing it around from side to the side of her bowl.

Devin and Jeff had looked at each other and the contact was enough to communicate a silent language only they would understand. Somebody had to speak.

''So,'' Jeff perked up. Clay and Hannah looked up to see what he had to say. ''Anything interesting happening after school today?''

Devin's features went stern when a brow was cocked at her. She was so sure she had forgotten about that bet made on Friday.

''No.-''

''Yes,'' He nods.

''No, Jeff, I'm not going,'' Devin had insisted.

''We made a bet,'' He prompts.

''Woah,'' Hannah chuckles, eyeing the two as much as Clay was, both filled with curiosity. ''I'm missing something.''

Devin looks at her and assures her with the shake of her head. ''It's nothing. My boyfriend is addicted to crack.''

''Hey,'' He scolds. He turned to Hannah and shakes her head. ''I am not, don't listen to shit like that. She's just upset because of what happened on Friday.''

''What happened on Friday?'' She continues to question, looking back at Clay whose features dropped in realization.

''Since Devin's a cheerleader, they didn't put her in the number on Friday's game,'' Clay had briefly explained for her.

''And I came with majority of that number,'' She exclaims, turning her body to face Hannah. ''They waited till last minute to tell me that I wasn't going to play.''

''And the bet?'' She cocks a brow, glancing at Jeff for only a split second before looking back at Devin.

''If she had lost, she had to go to practice today and set them straight-'' Jeff intervened, leaning towards Devin and annunciating a little louder, ''Which you did, by the way.''

''Which is why I waxed your legs,'' Devin mumbled loud enough for the table to hear.

Clay and Hannah broke out in laughter.

''I can explain that,'' Jeff had told them, a little flushed that confidential information he had wished and hoped would stay between the two were now shared.

''Was it a bet?'' Clay had asked.

Jeff had dropped his head in shame, giving the answer they were looking for. Hannah and Clay laughed more because of it.

''You guys have a problem,'' Hannah tells them through laughter.

''I'll have you know,'' Jeff sat up and jabbed a finger into their center of the table. ''Devin and I are together because of our bets.''

She jerked back with pursed lips, impressed given that they're so happy together.

''I don't know,'' Devin shakes her head, staring down at her half empty tray. She looks up to Hannah and asks, ''What do you think?''

Her eyes widened. For those who she only just met, she didn't expect for opinion to matter so early.

Maybe it wasn't so hard to make friends.

''I, uh,'' She stammers out. She clears her throat before speaking again. ''I think you should go. You seem to have enough confidence to even be on the team, you should have just as enough to speak up.''

Biting on her bottom lip, her lips had scrunched before she spoke to her. ''Thank you.''

She bops her head and smiles. ''You're welcome.''

Devin had faced forward, but was alarmed when Hannah had spoke again, ''Hey, if you want, I can even go with you to practice after school?''

''Really?'' She smiles. She watched as she nods her head. ''Okay, I'd like that.''

''Oh,'' Clay had abruptly came in. ''Speaking of after school, are we working at my house or at yours?''

Jeff had peered at him with a glare while Devin furrowed her brows at Jeff. Hannah had sat there thinking it must have been a regular, so she went back to playing with her food.

''What you guys talking about? Jeff has practice today,'' Devin mentions.

His lips flattened into a straight line before turning to look back at her. ''I do, if..''

''What the hell is this, Jeopardy?'' She remarked. ''If what? Spit it out, already.''

''If I wasn't on a small break from the team,'' He cringed.

Devin had straightened her posture. ''What for?''

''I'm failing world history,'' He states.

She broke out into a chuckle. ''Well, why didn't you come to me? I could have helped you out.''

He threw his head back and laughed.

Furrowing her brows, Devin turns to Hannah who also furrowed her brows and was looking at her before the two turned back to him.

Throughout his laughter, Jeff was shaking his head. ''No, oh no.''

''Why not?''

''The same reason why you guys don't actually study together in Study Hall,'' Clay had intervened.

Devin had pushed her bottom lip out, pursing her lips before turning to Hannah. The girls looked at one another with a sense of understanding and nodded their heads.

''Make sense.''

‘’You ready for this?’’ Hannah had asked just as they stood at the double doors to the gymnasium.

Fixing the straps of the duffel bag on her shoulder, Devin Greene straightens her posture. She breathes out, ‘’I always am.’’

She reached for one of the doors and held it open for the brunette behind her before strutting into the quiet gym with her head held high, her confidence kicking in the closer she got to the group standing around, watching her and her entrance.

‘’Devin,’’ Sheri calls, shocked by her appearance.

She had furrowed her brows along the lines of the company that was picking up her pace to match Devin’s.

‘’Hannah Baker,’’ She waves towards the group. Though the group remained silent and watched the girl like new prey. Hannah turns to Devin and points a thumb backwards. ‘’I’m gonna go sit.’’

She leans in towards her side and whispers in her ear, ‘’Intense.’’

Devin had ignored her statement and let her run off towards the bleachers.

‘’You got a lot of balls to show your face around here,’’ Amanda spoke up, her posture fixed to match Devin’s. She shakes her shoulders. ‘’I have to admit, after seeing you run out, I was sure you were done with this.’’

‘’My amazing boyfriend convinced me otherwise,’’ Devin smiled sweetly. ‘’I’m sure you would know, you only had a taste of it.’’

Chelsea’s features dropped into a gasp when turning back to Amanda.

‘’Listen, Devs,’’ Sheri calls out for, her head titled to the side sympathetically. ‘’I’m really sorry I had to drop that on you like that. The girls had came to me that same that day and I was only delivering the message-’’

‘’It’s fine, Sheri,’’ Devin continued to smile. ‘’In fact, your girls should be the one apologizing. Let’s see how good you’ll top the next game with that outstanding performance. All without my help.’’

The whole team had dropped their features, realizing they had really fucked up.

And Devin Greene was glad.
