Chapter 2: Promise

[WARNING: Suicide]

Her eyes fluttered open, tears flowing down her cheeks. All her memories from her past lives came back and she needed to find Hōzuki to be with him, never to be separated again. She looks at the guy next to her, who was very similar to Hōzuki but lacked the attractiveness.

"Hello, there. Had a good rest?"

"Where am I?"

"Well, you're in heaven, my dear."

"A-Am I dead? No, I c-can't! I c-can't leave him!"

"Unfortunately, you died at such a young age. Such a pure soul like you was automatically sent to heaven but it really is up to you if you want to stay here."

"I-I need to return. I can't leave like that! I h-have to tell him... t-that I love him..."

She was sobbing, the pain in her heart was far more painful than when the wood stabbed her.

"A beautiful lady shouldn't cry over a man. I know you're extremely upset, probably not being able to be the one you love. However, if you do stay in heaven, there are many others that you can fall in love with—If you'd want, there's me."

Y/N whacked his hands off her shoulder, glaring at him.

"No. I will only love him... I with only love H-Hōzuki."

"Wait, did you just say Hōzuki?"

"Yes, why?! D-Don't tell me he d-died too!"

"Yes, he did. But, I can bring him to you."

"H-Huh?! Y-You can?!"

"There's going to be a lot of fights but anything for a beautiful lady. Hōzuki is one lucky bastard to have you to like him. Why him?"

She fiddles with her fingers,

"H-He's absolutely sweet and charming... And, I feel secure around him."

"I guess that's valid... from a woman's perspective."

"O-Oh... I didn't quite get your name!"

"Hakutaku. Remember my name, dear."

Her eyes squint at him as he giggles walking out.

Hōzuki... You're Chou, right? I-I'm sorry that you died because of me.

In just minutes, the door came crashing open. Her eyes widened, looking at the familiar being but now with a horn on top of his head.

"H-Hōzuki?!"

"Y/N!"

His eyes quivered slightly and he wraps his arms around her frail body.

"I thought you were gone again."

Everyone that saw the scene was shocked seeing an emotional Hōzuki. Y/N's hands tapped onto his back and he released his grip. Suddenly, he whips his head towards Hakutaku.

"I'm taking her to Hell."

"W-wait, what?! I need explanations! Hōzuki!"

He just dragged her with him, bringing her to the place he called Hell. There was still this uncertain feeling in her and as they walked side by side, she tugged onto his sleeve and he looks down at her.

"Y-You're Chou, right?"

"You remember me?"

"S-So you're r-really Chou!"

Tears came flowing down her eyes, staining her rosy cheeks. Those who saw them thought he had once again rejected a beautiful woman.

"I-I'm sorry! *Hic* I'm s-so sorry that *Hic* I caused you t-to *Hic* die!"

Hōzuki's hands twitched before hugging her and petting her head. Ever since they met, in her previous life, his strokes would always calm her down.

"It's not your fault. But good new is that we're here together, right?"

"Mhmm..."

She takes a whiff of his scent and her body slowly relaxed.

"But you did not need to kill yourself when I was gone... You could have lived a good life."

Chou and Y/N were absolute best friends, always hanging out with each other. As they grew, Y/N had grown feelings for her male companion. She had always had a weak body, so she could never leave her house. He often came along with adventures, filling her with stories that made her smile.

"W-when we grow up and I have a stronger body, will you t-take me as your wife?"

"Huh? Y/N... focus on getting better first."

She sheepishly smiled but her lungs suddenly felt hot pain. Y/N started coughing vigorously, unable to control her body's reactions. Blood came out of her mouth and face paled. Chou's face was full of fear. He quickly brought her back in, making sure she took a good rest. An idea came into his mind. He'll go out and find someone that can actually heal her. As he made his way out of the village, he heard loud voices shouting.

"That's him! He's the one that cursed Y/N. He always hangs out with her. That's why her sickness is getting worse!"

His body was taken by the adults, flinging him into the fire as a sacrifice. In her room, she looked up at the sky as she remembered Chou's words before he went running out.

"I-I'll come back with someone to heal you. T-Then we can get married, okay?"

She smiles from that memory, clenching her hand as she awaited his return. Days went by and he was not back. Her sickness got worse and no one could heal her. The elders surrouned her, treating her as some goddess since she was the only daughter of the chief. That was when she heard words she did not want to hear.

"Wasn't that Chou kid the cause of her worsening sickness?! He's long gone and her sickness should be healed by now!"

...What? What do they mean that he's long gone?!

"Check the fire where we burnt him. If there are ashes of his remains, we have to dispose it to make sure he no longer lingers in the village!"

Ashes? Burnt?

Tears welled up in her eyes as fear glossed the once colorful orbs that went dull. Her gentle voice shook as she spoke.

"Y-You did not kill him, did you?"

"We had to. He was the cause of your prolonging sickness!"

"N-No... No... No, it can't be. He's not gone! H-He's..."

Outside her room, she heard someone scream,

"We have disposed his remains into the ocean! She should be safe now!"

Her eyes shook. They really did kill him. The one that made her lifeless torturous. The one that only cared for her for who she was, not as the daughter of the chief. She bawled, arms shaking as she pulled on her hair.

"W-WHY?! W-WHY!"

Her screaming caused her voice to go hoarse and everyone was worried. Did his death make her condition worse? Her father, the chief, came rushing down trying to explain to Y/N that it was all for her sake. She scooted to the edge of the wall, scared of the adults that murdered Chou.

"N-No... T-there's no p-point l-living if he's not a-around!"

"Stop spouting nonsense, Y/N! You'll become healthy and be able to marry rich!"

Rich? I don't care about richness like these adults.

As her father reaches for her, she pulls out a knife and slit her throat. Her bright red blood splashed all over as her frail body collapsed on the floor, the ending of her horrendous life without him.

"Hōzuki, m-may I p-please stay by your side? I don't want to separate from you for the third time."

He sighs, carrying her bridal style.

"Of course. We have to make up for the thousands of years we were apart from each other. I'll tell Enma that I'm taking you under my wing."
