Sunflowers

Saturday morning the sun was shinning and Alina was already up eating breakfast with her family, they were in the living room eating a bowl of cereals each one and watching The Simpsons, their perfect morning was ruined by the doorbell ringing "I'll get it" Aaron said

"Alina it's for you" She heard his brother down the hall, she got up with the bowl in her hand and eating on the way to the door

"Man wants to speak with you" Aaron informed, she looked at the door and there he was, smiling like a fool

"P-Perk" she sutter, her brother raised an eyebrow stranging the weird behaviour and enviroment between the two but shrugged his shoulders and left "You can't just appear here out of nowhere"

"Yeah I can" he smiled "Hurry up we are going out"

"What?"

"Take off your cute little pajama, dress something else so we can go out"

"What's the problem with my pajama? I can go out like this" she said confident

"No, you can't. "

"Is it that ugly" she questined looking down making him roll his eyes "I do actually like this pajamas, is very comfy also and-"

"The problem is that it suits way to well, so unless you want me to get in prison by murdering guys on the street you'd get dressed" He shooted

"okay okay Jason Voorhees" as he demanded she got dressed and climbed down stairs to go with him somewhere she had no idea of "Better?" she asked, he took alook at her analyzing her "Hm maybe way to much, can't you just dress something large or it will cover all of you" he said teasing

"This is what you getting, this or nothing"

"I'm fine with this... I am more than fine" he said trying to touch her waist but she slapped his hand

"Don't push your luck"

"You are mean"

Once in the his jeep she took the freedom to ask "Where are we going?"

"on a date"  he said starting the engine

"when did I say yes to this date"

"you didn't but I am taking you either way"

"Oh so you are basically kidnaping me"

"If you want it, I'm trying to be romantic"

"A week ago you were a jerk"

"So what am I now?"

"A romantic jerk" she smirked

"Look at her, so funny" he smiled

"I have big expectations on this...You were the expert on dates with Emma"

"Rules... number one no talking about ex's and fyi i'm much better now and everything I'm going to do for you will always be better"

"Flattered, may I ask why?"

"Because has meaning" he answered slightly taking a look at her, watching her blush "Are you... blushing Jones?"

"Just drive"

"yes ma'am" the car drive was long, very long in fact it was already time for lunch and Alina was starving though she was having fun, they were talking and teasing each other, they were both very relaxed, it seemed that the night they had made them comfortable, it was easy to talk to each other, no fears, no disagreements...

"We are here"

"In the middle of nowhere?" she asked looking at the beautifull field in front of her

"Yes"

"Well it's beautifull"

"Wait till you see on the other side" he said getting out of the car

"Wait, how will we get there?" she asked opening her door and watching him take a wooden basket

"Walking" he answere " Can you take that?" he questioned looking at the big bag she grabbed it and she followed him through the field

As they walked through the grass Alina noticed the yellow valley in front of them, an enourmous field full of sunflowers "Oh my god" she gasped

"Found this place a long time ago, never brought anyone here" he commented leying th basket on the small grass, "We'll eat here, with an amazing view " she noddded happily watching the flowers looking at the sun as if they were in love by it.

She arranged the tablecloth on the floor over the grass, he sat down and started to take their lunch. She was still dumbfounded by such beauty "There's a house there" she mentioned

"Yup it's from Harold Edwin" Colten informed handing her a big sandwich with ham, cheese, salad and a onion on top

"Thanks" she sad grabbing the sandwich, he poured red wine on both tall glasses " Who's that?" she asked munching her food

"The owner of the sunflower field" he explained "i met him the first time I was deppaired with this place"

"How did you find it?"

"Because of you"

"Me?" she asked and he hummed

"We always fought a lot and I hated it, started to hate myself for it I'd take long drives to calm myself, to think... then I found this, I sat right here and Harold was harvesting the sunflowers and started to talk with me"

Alina was smiling during the whole explanation, she was interested so she asked " what did you talk about?"

"Mostly you..." Colten said looking into her eyes

~Flashback~
The moon could be seen shinning and reflecting his glow to the green glassy grass. Colten was tired of walking he saw at the far end a tree, once there he sat with his back laying on the tree resting. He examined the place where he was the view was indescridibably gorgeous, a field of sunflowers in front of him but they were being collected.

"sunflowers, hm the irony" Colten said to himself, he had just made such a big drive to forget about her and when he gets here there's something to remind himself of her. Emotions filled up a tear escaped his eye

"You look hideous, boy" Colten hear a raspy voice say

"Hm, Thanks" Colten said giving a chuckle, he sensed the man approaching him "What happened son? What is a young man like you doing here looking miserable" The man asked, he had a wooden staff on his hand and a straw hat "Must be a girl" the man said maing Colten chuckle

"Yeah it is a girl"

"a girl or a woman?" the man asked making Colten looked at him, the man sat in the grass "They are quite different ..."

"What is so different?"

"Well.. a girl acts childishly-"

"Than that's her" Colten said making the old man laugh "Let me tell you the rest... A girl acts childishly, she plays with your mind, carves attention and if you don't care she'll chase you down because for her you are fascinating, a way to get her perfect world even more perfect. Now - " the man said chuckling "The Woman acts solemnly, her words have meanings and altough she seems to act foolishly it's just because she has been hurt and she recognizes her blemishes. See... a woman doesn't play with your mind. she explores it, she makes you test your limits, makes you do things, say things you didn't know you'd ever do. She doesn't want attention she wants respects and if you don't care about her she'll replace you by herself that's the only person she needs. A woman is realistic, she doesn't live in an ideal word but she has the power to make yours superb." After his explanation the man took of the hat and looked at Colten "So a woman or a girl? What is she?"

"She is impossible to deal with. Makes me go insane. Always doing what she wants, doesn't listen to me, doesn't look at me, sometimes I think she doesn't even acknowledge my existence. She puts me on the edge but she is the one to take me out of there, has troubles on believing in herself only sees her flaws and that makes me so angry. She is this extaordinary human but doesn't recognize it, she is so stubborn and probably hates me but knows me better than myself." Colten unburden

"let it out son" The old man said giving small pats on Colten's back "so it's a woman I see... those are complicated"

"yeah"

"They are complicated because we don't want them for today or tomorrow, we want them for a lifetime" The wise man said

"Any advices?" Colten asked desperate

"One only, once she stops being stubborn means she has given up"

"On what?"

"On you" The man said getting up

"Where are you going?" Colten asked

"Work son"

"I'll help" Colten offered following the man. They got to the field of sunflowers and colten was stunned by those giant sunflowers he saw people helping harvesting the sunflowers probably some workers of the old man  "What made you start a plantation of sunflowers?"

"A woman" the man asked smiling, he followed the man to his stone house. He noticed the mailbox had painted on it and 'H&D' . The man guided Colten to the entrance of the big house, he saw the lake in front of the house too "That's quite modern for this house" Colten mentioned looking at the glass walls

"Hm- yes Had to make a bigger room for the reunions, I hate that" The man said opening the door

"Wow, it's beautifull" Colten said

"Hm...not for long"

"Why?"

"They want to make me improve the house"

"Who?"

"The one's who get me sellers...they are a real pian in the ass"

"Who are they?"

"My nephews"

"You don't have sons?"

"No, unfortunally we weren't able to create life" the man said in the kitchen, he took a warm bread and put it on the table, a plate with ham, other with cheese and a bottle of wine " sit there"

"Oh I can't I have to go-"

"Sit there. You aren't going anywhere it's late. it's 5 in the morning an you surely have a long trip home, rest here then go home" The man demanded and Colten nodded sitting on the chair. Both sat down Colten was quite intrigued with this man why was he so kind? he didn't know but he suddendly glimpsed at a frame with a beautifull lady on it "Wow" Colten said amazed the room was full of paintings and photos but that one stood out the most

"Oh yes she was a gorgeous woman"

"is that your wife?"

"It is, that is my Doris" the man said smiling at the picture "That picture was taken in her parents house"

"She was very pretty" Colten remarked taking a bit of ham and bread "So she was the reason of the sunflower field?" the man nodded happily and questioned Colten "Do you have time for a story?"

"I do"

"And ears? Nowadays young people dont want to hear us"

"Well I do, please tell me" Colten said taking a sip of wine

"It was in th 50's, I was a Marine, the Korean War was getting uglier and they requested for air support, though a lot of our archery was in England so they demanded us to go there. we had to fly to the UK get our equipment and then fly to Korea but along the way we lost the coordinates so our saviour was the telephonist on the other side of the line. When we got on land I had to thank her for saving our lives turns out it was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. So I took my chance "

"Did you invite her out...?"

"Yes... to a dance club" the man said smiling at the memories "I got a way to tell my captain I need to stay as I had a high status on the Marine, he let me stay. We danced the whole night and I fell in love with her, guess she fell in love to. I found a way to work in the Marine Corps of the United Kingdom and get more time with her"

"Staying in a different country just for a woman?"

"I told! A woman will explore your brain, she make me do things I didn't even know I could with 20 years. I was young and naive yet I was in love. I had a good reason and that was all I needed to stay"

"You really loved her"

"Yes. I did." The man gave a bigger smile "We dated and a year later I left for the war in Korea, it was a very bad time, I saw things I didn't wanted to see. I made a promise to myself, to live for her."

"That is amazing" Colten said interested in the man's courage and love. The man nodded and continued his story "When I got back I asked her to marry me, but her parents didn't agreed with her altough I was a militar I was an atheist and they were very rigid Christian, the war made me stop balieving in God I guess"

"so you were forbidden to marry each other"

"Hm, yes"

"So what did you do?"

"We ran away"

"Really?" Colten smirked and the old man laughed and reassured him again "Yes. We ran away to America just the two" he said showing his two fingers and laughing "I got back to the US Marine and she got a job on a florist. We lived for 2 months in a motel to save money"

"I was a sargeant I did won a pretty good amount of money for that time so I bought this house and the field in front of it. She decorated the house as she please and once we were stable we got married"

"So how ...why the sunflowers?"

"You know, son, marriage is a whole new field in that perpective you learn things about your partner that you didn't knew about, because people change their likes and dislikes it's a whole new path and I learned she love me a lot but there was one thing she loved more than me"

"What was it?"

"Sunflowers" he said pointing to the jar of sunflowers on the kitchen counter "She loved how they how follow the sun as if they were in love with it and how sad they were when their love would gone"

"I know someon like that" Colten chuckled engaged by the old man's story

"So in on our one year weeding aniversary my gift was a tractor and on it's seat two sacks of sunflower seeds . I planted them so wen she wake up in the morning one day she would look at field full of sunflower. I worked a whole week putting seeds on he big field but let me tell you it was worth it just to see her face light up at the view of the field full of sunflowers. One day I arrived home and instead of sunflowers it was man and woman there"

"What happened?"

"That was what I asked her, she told me 'The flowers were happy here but now it's for them to make people happy. I don't want them to die like this' . That woman had given the sunflowers to the florist after awhile the florist asked her when would be more sunflowers ready to collect... we planted again and the bussiness started to grow, so much that I had to make it a full time job, and ocassionally I bought the other fields we started to live out of sunflowers, there weren't many fields of them near by and people would buy them for everything florists, wedding companies who would want the flowers fresh, flowers for tea, medicine... It was what kept her alive after she found out she couldn't get pregnant, those flowers were our babies.."

"That is a beautifull story"

"Yes it is... my Doris, she was a sunflower. Altough she is not here anymore everything I do is for her, The field, the house, I try to keep it alive as she would want"

"I bet she is happy to hear that"

"I hope so"

"I'm sure Doris is very happy to at least had a life full of love and sunflowers" Colten said making the old man laugh

"Sure, I hope so. So who is your sunflower? I would love to meet her"

"I don't know if that will ever happen"

"Ah hopeless?"

"I know her since I had 1 year old and I love her since then"

"Did you ever told her that?"

"I'm way to proud for that" Colten chuckled

"Well life will make sure that pride leaves in desesperate times. I'm sure I will meet her" The man smiled making a toast with the red wine

"I hope so"
