Ruth Powers #2 (part one)
The smell of corndogs and nachos and the sound of country music filled your senses. You looked around and saw the barmaids serve drinks round to tables and take orders. You could see someone fall off the mechanical bull as well but you weren't thinking about any of that. You were thinking about why you were here and what you were doing here at shotkickers again. You needed a change of scene since your recent breakup and this, you thought, was the place to take your mind off of the whole situation. Of course, there was plenty of atmosphere and plenty going on here but all you were was sitting there quietly at a table by yourself.
"You alright there?" You heard a voice address you and you looked in front of you to see a concerned looking waitress.
"I...yeah, I'm fine" You gave her a weak smile as she picked up your plate to take back to the kitchen.
"Can i get you anything else?" She smiled.
"I'll have another drink, please"
"Coming right up!"
You drank down what was left in your glass and rather forcefully sat it back down on the table and sighed loudly. As you did this, you heard someone else doing the same and you looked across the room to see who it was. It was a woman about your age at another table who looked to have just finished her drink as well. You both caught yourselves looking at each other and smiled at each other. She was a woman, about the same age as you with brown hair. She was wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette and was dressed like she was going out somewhere. She was all alone and then she approached your table.
"Hey" She smiled. "You sitting alone as well, huh?"
"It would appear so" You responded.
"So, whatcha doing here?" She asked in polite conversation.
"Uh, well i just went through a recent breakup and i just needed to get out of the house and i thought here would do but I'm kinda alone as you can see" You gave a weak chuckle.
"Hey, I'm a recent divorcee myself. I came here a while ago with my friend to take my mind off it. It isn't as fun without her around though"
"Yeah, i know what you mean. It ain't as much fun without company"
"Well we got each other?" She smiled and sat down beside you and took off her sunglasses.
"Here's your drink, sir" The waitress said as she returned to the table with your drink.
"Uh, sorry but could you make that two, please?"
You and the woman got to talking and she introduced herself as Ruth Powers. She told you about herself. She said she was divorced, had a daughter called Laura and told you about her recent endeavour with a friend of hers called Marge. You also told her about you and your break up with your ex. You both just talked, joked and laughed the night away together and even did a spot of line dancing!
"I'm never gonna get the hang of this!" You laughed as you kept tripping yourself up with your own two feet.
"You just gotta get into it! Come on! It's easy!" She demonstrated.
"I'll keep on trying!"
You didn't realise how quickly the hours had passed and it was dark out before you knew it. Your eyes widened in horror as you checked your watch.
"Oh man, i didn't realise the time"
"Yeah, i should be getting back to my daughter" She sighed in agreement.
"I guess i should call a cab" You smiled at her as you picked up the phone and got your money out to pay for this call.
"Would you like a lift home?" She offered.
