Chapter Two

The three jogged inside to the reception desk. Bobby approached her first.

"Where's Dean Winchester located?"

She looked up slightly from her computer, "Are you a part of his immediate family?"

"Yes! Now for god's sakes tell me where the damn kid is!" Bobby demanded.

She rolled her eyes, "Don't yell at me, sir."

Jody held up her sheriff badge, "I suggest you look a little faster and not take your damn time. We're in a bit of a situation - like most people at a hospital - so please just tell us where he is so I don't arrest you for incompetence."

The receptionist glared at the three of them and wrote down on a piece of paper where Dean was, sliding it towards them. Sam took one look at it and sprinted in the direction she had written. Dean was on the second floor in the surgery center.

Sam ran up the stairs and reached the center in no time flat. He stared through the window of the double doors, searching for any sign of his brother. Machines beeped all around in separate intervals. The place reeked of medicine and cleaning supplies with a hint of desperation from people holding on to fragile human life.

Sam saw Dean laying in a hospital bed surrounded by several people all dressed in a hospital uniform. He went to open the doors, but a nurse stopped him.

"I'm sorry, sir, but the surgery center is off limits for right now unless you have permission. Please wait in the waiting room."

Bobby and Jody showed up behind them. Sam was yelling now.

"That's my brother in there! I'm not waiting in a fucking waiting room! I'll wait right here until they tell me I can see him!"

He nodded, "If you wish."

The nurse showed Bobby and Jody to the waiting room, while Sam stood there. He would either pace back and forth or he would sit up against the wall right beside the doors. He fell asleep, slumped against that same cream-colored wall.

Jody walked over to him to check on him and noticed he was passed out. She looked at him sympathetically and took a folded blanket off a cart and laid it across Sam's body. It must've been five or six hours since the accident. She stared at Dean through the windows, he was no longer surrounded by any workers. Jody and Bobby had been informed the other person involved in the accident had past away. A young kid named Alfie. Jody thanked god Dean wasn't killed, just injured.

He was resting now and hadn't woken up since he blacked out. It was partly because of how bad he hit his head, mixed with all the painkillers they had been giving him. Jody held her hand on the window sill, longing to see Dean. Tears threatened the corner of her eyes. He wasn't allowed visitors yet, but in the morning they could see him. The doctor would explain more in depth what has happened to him then. Visitor hours had technically been over, but because Dean was admitted past visitor hours the hospital allowed it for the night.

Jody noticed a nurse staring at Sam and walked over to her, "Hi, what's your name?"

She smiled, "Uh, it's Amelia."

Jody returned a smile, "So I caught you staring at my boy, Sam, over there, sleeping beauty."

She blushed, "You did? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to stare. I just thought it was sweet how he stayed there for hours because he's worried about his brother."

"Oh yeah, that's Sam for ya! He's a little sweetheart. Maybe you should talk to him...?" Jody encouraged.

Amelia shook her head, "No, I don't think I should. I'm pretty shy and I don't think he would be interested in me."

"I'm sure he would, sweetie! You just gotta go up to him and talk to him!"

She nodded, "Okay, I think I might. I leave around 7 in the morning, but I come back at 7 tomorrow night. If you guys are still here, or he is awake, I'll talk to him."

Jody sighed, looking at the surgery center, "Sadly I think we will still be here."

Amelia placed a hand on Jody's back, "I'm sorry about your son."

Jody corrected her, "He's my nephew, but it's terrible. I wonder what exactly happened."

"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to assume-"

Jody shook her head, "No need to apologize. Sometimes I think he might as well be my son..." Her voice drifted off before she snapped back into a smile, "But I think I'm going to get some rest on one of the couches in the waiting room. Good luck with the rest of your shift."

Jody hugged this complete stranger. She was always a hugger.

She walked back to the waiting room. Bobby was snoring up a storm, and Jody was surprised he even fell asleep, but with his age increasing it seemed to be more believable by the day. The three of them were all asleep. Sam in the hallway and Bobby and Jody on the couches in the waiting room.

Amelia smiled down at Sam before walking into the surgery center. She walked across the area to Dean's room and looked at Dean's report on a clipboard hanging on the door. The nurse shook her head and looked down. She couldn't believe what she had just read.

Amelia glimpsed back at Sam through the now open door to the center. She knew he would be crushed after finding out the news. The job as a nurse paid a terrible price when you became even slightly attached to your patients. There was nothing they could do for Dean, and she didn't have the heart to tell any of them.

She peeked into the room seeing that he had enough fluid in the IV for him and looked at the heart monitor. It was at a steady rate now, the complete opposite of what it was earlier. Amelia was one of the nurses helping with Dean. Although after a while and a hell of a lot of tests later, they found out there wasn't much to do, besides bandage and stitch areas repeatedly.

She left him and walked out of the center and down the hall to the vending machine. She bought a little packet of cookies and a water bottle for Sam, laying it beside his sleeping body with no note, no nothing. Her kindness was all she had during these dark times. She prayed that it might be enough.
