Chapter Sixteen

That same familiar dark street was drenched as rain drizzled down. Castiel shrugged off his trench coat and put it over top of both of their heads.

Dean intertwined his fingers with Cas' and held his waist with his free hand. The coat fell to the ground in a puddle, but Dean didn't seem to care. He began swaying just as the song Simple Man played from an overhead source.

The corners of Cas' mouth tugged into a big toothy grin. He stared down at their feet, still amused by the concept of dancing. Dean pulled him closer so he stood on Dean's boots. Dean moved more elaborately in long swift motions in complete ballroom dance moves. Castiel chuckled dazed, "I could not love a human more than I love you."

Dean raised an eyebrow, "Is that so?"

Cas nodded, "Why do you think I want to take you as my husband in holy matrimony?"

"Isn't there some religious rule against gays marrying?"

Cas shrugged, "I don't understand why there should be. I have come to realize that love is love. It is unpredictable and you cannot choose what gender you are attracted to. You are born that way."

Dean nodded in agreement and continued to dance, rolling his head back mesmerized by the music and Cas following in the motions. Rain fell upon his face in little droplets. He was beginning to get soaked, but it didn't phase him.

Castiel complimented, "You look very beautiful tonight, my love."

Dean focused his gaze on Castiel, getting lost in his eyes. Then, Cas laid his head on Dean's chest. He whispered softly, "You have taught me how to dance, how to be human, and most of all how to love. I could never thank you enough for any of those things. I love you more than anyone could love anything in this entire vast complicated universe. You are my one and only heaven."

It was silent for a moment. Dean pressed his lips to Cas' forehead. Cas added, "How did my vows sound?"

Dean grinned against his skin, then grabbed Cas' jaw so he would face him. Their faces inched closer with eyes closed and lips jutting outward. They were interrupted by a familiar voice overhead.

Sam spoke softly, "I, uh," he let out a sad chuckle, "I don't know who exactly can hear me - whether it's Dean or Castiel - but there's something I need to say. It's been weeks since I've heard my brother's voice-" Castiel froze, staring at Dean. He was too distracted to block out Dean's periphery senses this time. He quickly cut Sam out.

But Dean had heard already, "Sam? Weeks? What?"

Cas sighed and let Dean hear again.

"-drinking to forget so I wouldn't have to blame myself, but nothing helps anymore. I became distant from everyone just like you have. Jody and Bobby have coped with telling you stories and singing you goodnight. I need to ask, is this really what you want? Do you want to be stuck inside your head for the rest of your life? You'll grow old, but time will continue to be frozen in your mind. Is that what you want? Jody and Bobby go home and cry themselves to sleep. I'm piss drunk and can't sleep. We're falling apart without you. It would be different if you were dying, I'd tell you it'd be okay to let go. Here I am, sitting in a hospital room where you have no business being in in the first place. Cas, I realize you love him and I promise you he loves you too, but can you live with yourself knowing the effect this is having on us in the real world? Do you understand how much of a mess I've been since Dean left? This is all my fault for letting you inside of him in the first place. Please leave him, let him live an actual life. Doesn't he deserve that? If you truly loved him, wouldn't you let him go?"

Dean took a step back from him, "What's going on, Cas?" He asked accusingly.

Castiel let out a sad, lingering sigh, "I don't know how to explain every detail, but Dean, you are in a coma. You are completely okay; your body is better than ever, actually. I suppose I just... I became too greedy. I put you in this state so we could be together forever. I now realize that that was foolish of me... but I am irretrievably in love with you. I just wanted to be with you for all of eternity."

Castiel took a step forward and this time Dean didn't back away. He shook his head out of confusion, "I don't understand..."

Castiel interlocked their hands, staring down at them connected as one. "It was wrong of me to do this to you. I realize that now. All I wanted was happiness, but a part of being human is sadness," he looked up and his eyes locked with Dean's glassy green eyes. They both were beginning to cry.

"Cas....I love you, I truly do. I've loved you from the very first day, but-"

Castiel finished his sentence in a choked up sob, "But you have to wake up and I have to leave."

"No! Don't leave, just let me have the day awake, and then at night, I'm yours."

"Dean, you know how poorly that worked the first time. I have to let you live."

Dean wanted to protest, he really did, but Cas was right. He'd be too distracted during the day to ever live a full life.

Dean pulled him into a tight hug. The rain masked their tears and sorrow.

Sam's voice choked from beyond, "Dean, I need you to tell me if this is what you really want. I just want you to be happy."

Dean let go of Castiel. He eyed him one last time, taking in his beauty. "So this is goodbye."

He leaned in and their lips connected in a wet mess of tears and rain drops, but it was beautiful. It was the most beautiful moment filled with so much incomprehensible sorrow. He felt his sweet love on his mouth for the very last time. Then, he let go.

Castiel explained, "When you wake up, I want you to be completely healed. I want you to be a new man, well the old man that you once were. The simple man you used to be before the accident. Because of this, it's going to be dark for a moment, but don't be scared. It's going to be okay, I got you."

"Cas, what are you talking about?"

He mused, "I will always love you, Dean. Goodbye."

Dean swallowed the lump in his throat, "I-I love you too, Cas. Goodbye, my angel."

Those two words made Castiel choked into an even bigger sob. "My angel." He would always be Dean's angel and no one else's because he will never love someone again like he had loved Dean Winchester.

He disappeared from Dean and as he had said, everything went dark and silent, but only for a brief moment.

Sam let go of his brother, then suddenly the beeping returned to normal. He looked at the machine, baffled.

Dean's hand suddenly gripped Sam's retreating wrist. His eyes blinked open to see a terrified Sam staring down at him. Dean cracked a grin at his little mess of a brother.

"Hiya, Sammy."
