Chapter Nine

The next morning during breakfast Dean was in a great mood, better than he has been in weeks. They all sat and ate eggs and bacon. Jody fed Dean, while Sam talked about Amelia. He went on and on, "Yeah, she's amazing. We're going ice skating tonight."

Dean smiled, "I'm really happy for you, Sammy."

Sam looked at him a little confused, "You're in an unusually good mood today."

"Are you done with those nightmares? The ones where you call for help from some guy named Cas?" Jody asked.

Sam choked on his orange juice, "A man named Cas?"

Jody answered, "Yes, I believe he was wearing a trench coat. Which I find oddly strange considering I saw a strange man wearing a trench coat in the hospital right outside the surgery center where Dean's room was after accident happened."

Dean eyed her a bit, contemplating, but then gave Sam a judgmental look for reacting that way over the subject, "Yeah. It's just someone who's constantly in my dreams. He's perfect. I wish he were real, but obviously that isn't possible."

Sam stood up, "Will you excuse Dean and I for a moment?"

They watched Sam roll Dean's wheelchair out of the room and outside onto the porch. Bobby looked at Jody, "Are those idjits acting strange to you? Or is it just me?"

She set her hand on his, "Well, they better come clean soon. They can't hide things from us. They should know better."

Sam whispered to Dean, "Simple man."

Castiel blinked into control. He greeted, "Hello, Sam."

Sam leaned in close with his hand clenching the arm of the chair, "What the hell is Dean talking about when he said a man named Cas is in his dreams?!"

Cas tilted his head like it was obvious, "I have been in his dreams."

Sam gritted his teeth and tilted his head to the light blue sky in frustration, trying not to shout, "Cas, why the hell are you in his head?! You are just supposed to heal him, then get out!" He fumed.

Castiel replied, "Yes, and I am healing him. It's helping him to heal faster and more efficient to see him inside his dreams in order to diffuse his nightmares. I make the nightmares go away so that the messages they send down his neurological pathways do not interfere with the healing of his spinal chord."

Sam countered, "I'm sure that would make sense to a doctor, or - I don't know - an astrophysicist, but I don't care! It sounds like the guy is in love with you!"

Castiel's eyes widened in his vessel, "You think so?"

Sam glared at him, "You love him too, don't you?"

Cas didn't answer, purely because he was unsure. He had never felt this way before, not even his love for God has ever been similar to this feeling. Cas blinked away so Dean was in control again.

"So what is it?" The real Dean asked.

Sam shook his head and kicked a rock off of the wooden porch. He watched as it rolled off. All he wanted was a straight answer for once. Dean raised an eyebrow, "Is it something I said?"

Sam took a deep breath, then looked to his brother. Still in his wheelchair, paralyzed. He couldn't do anything about Castiel because he needed him for Dean's sake. He wheeled Dean back inside without another word. Jody stared at Sam and their eyes met.

"What?" Sam snapped.

She raised an eyebrow, "Mind telling me what's going on, Sam?"

Dean looked up at Sam confused. Bobby and Jody waited for an answer with intimidating stares. Sam defended himself, "Nothing is going on at all."

During the commotion, Dean attempted to use all of his strength to move his arm so he could take more of his medication and go to sleep. His attempt failed. The farthest he had gotten was a little hand twitch.

Cas could see Dean's efforts to see him. He knew that he shouldn't, but he used his angelic power to make Dean sleep right then and there.

Dean's head rolled lifelessly to the side. Jody, Bobby, and Sam all stared at him worriedly. They called his name, but he laid lifeless. They checked for his pulse and when they found one they could only wonder what to do next.

Inside his mind, Dean stood in the middle of the familiar street. He walked down the middle in search of Castiel. Cas appeared behind him and hugged him from behind.

"Hello, Dean," he whispered against Dean's shoulder.

Dean smiled and turned around, "Hey, Cas," he said, receiving a returning smile from the angel.

"What would you like to do on our date this time?" Dean asked.

Cas simply shrugged, "You are the expert on these activities."

Dean held Castiel's hand and began walking down the street. He looked straight ahead and said, "Our entire relationship reminds me of a song from when I was a kid. I'm sure you already know the memory since you are a figment of my imagination-"

Cas insisted, "Please, tell me about this memory."

Dean continued, "Okay then. After our parents died, Sammy and I couldn't sleep at all. We lived with our uncle and aunt. No matter what they tried, they couldn't put us to sleep. Jody sat at the edge of my bed and sang to us - that song, 'Once Upon A Dream.' Tell us that we could walk again with our parents inside our dreams. Of course, the song was meant for lovers, which is why it reminds me of us. 'You'll love me at once the way you did... once upon a dream.'"

Castiel whispered, "Could we listen to the song?"

Dean smiled at him and tugged him lightly into a record shop. It was vacant, of course. The only song that began playing was Jody's lullaby. It spun on an extravagant record player in the middle of the room. Dean wrapped his arm around Cas' waist as Cas leaned his head against Dean's shoulder and the song played.

"I know you, I walked with you, once upon a dream. I know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam."

Dean looked down at him and kissed his forehead.

He cooed in Castiel's ear, "But if I know you, I know what you'll do.

You'll love me at once, the way you did, once upon a dream."
