Chapter Four

Sam shook his head in disbelief, "That was... This... This can't be possible."

Castiel furrowed his brow, "But it is possible. Are you denying your faith?"

Sam anxiously ran a hand through his hair, still unsure of what to think, "I thought praying was just supposed to make your life feel less meaningless," He shook his head again.

"I assure you, some prayers can be answered if you pray the right way," Castiel said, "You asked for an angel, and that revealed your location to me. I happened to be close by and willing to help."

Sam paced back in forth, silent, trying to digest the existence of angels.

"I have a proposition for you, Samuel," Castiel announced.

Sam's eyes widened as he stopped pacing, "You know my name?"

Castiel nodded, "I know almost every human's name who has ever walked on this earth."

Sam eyed him skeptically, "So what is this proposition you mentioned? And call me Sam. Samuel is weird."

"Sam, I can heal your brother," Castiel offered.

Sam felt his heart well up with joy as a grin stretched across his face. Castiel took a deep breath, "But -" and Sam's smile melted, "- I will have to possess his vessel and heal him inside-out."

Sam paused as he took in the news.

"The only way you'll be able to heal him... is by possessing him?" He frowned.

Castiel nodded, "That is correct."

"But he'll be able to walk and run and use his arms and hands again?" Sam asked.

"He'll be able to use all of his paralyzed body parts to the fullest extent which they were able before the accident," Castiel confirmed.

"And you'll leave as soon as he's done healing?" Sam pressed. Castiel nodded.

Sam thought for a moment. Could this be real? Or was he letting some creeper into Dean's room? It wasn't like this guy asked for money or anything. Plus he magically appeared in the middle of a locked chapel with the impressive lighting. Sam guessed the worst thing that could happen is that Castiel turned out to be a perverted magician and he would have to throw a few punches to protect Dean.

"Okay, let's do it," Sam decided, "but we have to make sure my aunt and uncle are no where near Dean when you do it. I doubt they'll want a stranger seeing him."

Castiel followed Sam out of the room. Castiel leaned in and whispered to Sam, "Why are all of these humans staring at us?"

"Probably because they don't remember seeing a man in a trench-coat walk into the monastery, but they suddenly see one walk out," Sam whispered down to him. Castiel was surprisingly short for a messenger of God.

Castiel looked confused, but shrugged it off and kept walking to the surgery center. Sam peeked through the window to see if Bobby and Jody were in with Dean. They both were. Sam whispered, "Okay, Castiel, I need you to wait right here and act normal."

Castiel stayed in place, unmoved, trying to figure out exactly what normal was. Sam walked into the surgery center and to Dean's room. He lightly knocked on the door, "Hey, guys, do you mind going into the waiting room for a little while? I want to have some alone time with Dean."

The two exchange looks and nodded in agreement. They stood up and left to sit in the waiting room. Jody noticed Castiel standing beside the double doors. She felt uneasy, the way he looked strange and out of place. The way he intensely stared at her in his trench coat, but she brushed it off and kept walking alongside Bobby.

Sam quickly jogged over to get Castiel, "That's not exactly what I meant by normal," he commented.

Sam pulled him by the arm into Dean's room. Dean was asleep again from all the medication. He locked the door behind them and closed all of the blinds to the windows for privacy.

Castiel stared at Dean. Then, sat beside him on a chair. He began extending his arm, when Sam stopped him, "Whatever you do, do not tell Dean you are an angel."

Castiel tilted his head, "But I am an angel."

Sam nodded, "Yes, but he can't know that."

"Why not?" Castiel asked.

"Just trust me. He's not the biggest on faith. He'll think he's going insane and might freak out a bit," Sam said.

Castiel agreed not to and pressed his right palm to Dean's forehead. Castiel was immediately brought inside Dean's dream state.

He saw Dean through a bar's window, enjoying a beer with Sam. Castiel walked into the bar and towards Dean. The establishment smelled like greasy food and alcohol. One song played over and over again. "Simple Man." The song that was playing during the accident.

Castiel leaned against the wall with his arms folded across his chest, waiting for Sam to walk away to use the bathroom or get another drink. He watched the way Dean moved. The way he slowly brought the beer to his lips, tipping the bottle and his head back to let the cheap liquid spill into his mouth. Then, swallowing it and licking the excess beer off of his soft lips.

Castiel looked away when he started feeling some sort of unfamiliar feeling that he has never felt before. He assumed it was because he had been walking on earth with humans. The first time he had ever been on earth with the human race.

When he noticed Sam walk away, Castiel found his chance. He slid onto the barstool where Sam originally sat. Dean looked at him confused and then grinned, "How may I help you, darling?"

Castiel cleared his throat before speaking, "My name is Castiel and I'd like to propose an offer to you."

Dean took a sip of his beer and flirted, "And what exactly would that be?"

Castiel swallowed hard, "I'd like to heal you from this paralyzed state you are in."

Dean nearly spit out the beer that was in his mouth. He barely swallowed and chuckled a little, "Um... that's not at all what I was expecting," he raised an eyebrow, "You're pretty cute though, Cas. So why the hell not? It's not like it'd make a difference to me."

Castiel nodded and smiled slightly. No one has ever called him "Cas" before and he liked it.

"Well good. I'm glad you are giving me permission to do so. I will see you again soon then, Dean," Cas said.

"Can't wait to see more of you, trench coat," Dean grinned.

And with that Castiel disappeared. He thought Cas was a cute, gawky, strange man. In this dream he only idly wondered how this man knew his name and how he had disappeared. He decided to blame it on the alcohol. Dean slowly slid the beer away from him when Sam came back to the table.

Castiel returned back to reality and looked up at Sam towering over him, "He agreed. So I'm going to possess his vessel. I'll let him have full control at all times, unless you need to speak to me. If you need to speak to me, use some sort of safe word so I can have control and have a conversation with you."

Sam paused to think. Castiel interrupted his train of thought, "Say 'Simple Man'."

Sam's brow furrowed, "Where did that come from?"

Castiel shrugged, "It was playing inside of Dean's dream on repeat. Some sort of song."

Sam's lips curved into a smile and he chuckled a little, "Dean loves his Lynyrd Skynyrd."

Castiel tilted his head, "What's a Lynyrd Skynyrd?"

Sam shook his head, "It's irrelevant. So is there anything else before you, ya know?"

Castiel stated, "Well once I leave this vessel to possess Dean's, he will just sit here. He's going to ask a lot of questions as to where he is. So good luck."

Sam scoffed, "Thanks. You too and thank you for doing this."

He held out his hand for Castiel to shake it, but Castiel didn't understand the gesture and just stared down at his hand. Sam curled his fingers into his palm and put his arm down, glancing around awkwardly.

Castiel exited his current vessel and into Dean's with a bright white light. Sam shielded his eyes with his arms. The light stopped a few seconds later and Sam looked to see Dean.

Dean was still sleeping like a baby, but a confused vessel sat in a chair beside Dean. He stuttered in a much higher tone of voice than Castiel's deep raspy one, "W-where am I? W-what am I doing here?"

Sam thought on his feet, "I'd like to ask you the same question. What are you doing inside my brother's hospital room?!"

The vessel scratched the back of his head and quickly apologized, "I am so sorry. I have no idea what happened. I'll leave you two."

Sam nodded and held the door open for the vessel to leave. He shut it after and returned his attention to Dean. Sam whispered, "Simple man?"

A blue light flashed before Dean's eyes. Castiel immediately took control and sat up in the hospital bed, "Hello Sam," it was Dean's voice, but about two octaves lower. That was really low.

Sam smiled, "Hey Castiel, I was just making sure it worked."

Castiel nodded, "It did. I have a lot of work in healing to do, but I promise as soon as I finish, I will leave his vessel."

Sam nodded, "Okay, I trust you. Thank you again."

Castiel smiled ever so slightly and then the blue light flashed again. Dean fell back against the bed, still asleep. Sam was surprised it didn't wake him up. Castiel wasn't exactly gentle with him.

Sam inhaled slowly and exhaled the same way. He whispered to himself in reassurance, "Everything is going to be okay. Everything is going to be okay. And if I say it long enough, I'll believe it too."
