Chapter Five

Dean slowly blinked awake with Sam by his bedside. Jody and Bobby were at the bottom of the hospital bed, holding hands and watching over Dean. Sam held Dean's hand and squeezed it slightly. Dean smiled at him, "Hey, Sammy," and he returned the slightest possible squeeze back to Sam.

Sam's mouth was opened in complete shock. Dean moved his hand. Even if it was slight, it was still progress. Better than the alternative.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Dean asked.

Both Jody and Bobby looked at Sam questioningly. He was tearing up a little. Sam shook his head, "Oh it's um nothing. Just something in my eye. So how are you, man?"

Dean responded, "I don't know. The pain killers are definitely working 'cause I feel awesome!" he glanced at Jody who was eyeing him scoldingly, "I mean, I was told it's a miracle I'm still alive, so there's that to be happy about, right?" He said quickly in an attempt cover the fact he had just told the sheriff he was high.

Bobby raised his eyebrows, "I'd like to say it's been a pretty damn good day then, boy."

Dean chuckled a little, "Yeah, you could say that."

There was an air of silence.

"Do you want to tell us what happened in the car accident?" Jody finally asked in a hushed tone. Bobby shook his head at her, as a hint to not talk about it.

Dean nodded like it was no big deal, "I don't see why not. I was just leaving the bar after my daily drink. It was a nice night so I thought, why not take the long way home? I was playin' Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd while cruising down the street, right? Well I'm in the middle of singing a verse when I saw this beam of light shoot across the sky. I slam on the breaks and Baby drifts into the other lane where I collide with another driver who was driving about 50 over the speed limit anyways."

Bobby stared at him, "A beam of light? You were taken out by a fucking shooting star?"

"Bobby!" Jody reprimanded him.

Dean rolled his eyes, "No, it wasn't a star, and that's why it caught my eye. I didn't know what it was, but I... I guess I sorta felt like I needed to find out what the hell it was. I'm sure it sounds stupid. I mean it was obviously a dick move to do that. Got me here. But it was like... it was calling for me to help it... I guess? Is that weird? That's weird. Okay. We're done talking about this," Dean moved his head the best he could to look away from them.

All three stared at Dean concerned. They weren't sure whether to believe it was a part of his imagination or if he truly saw it. What the hell was it though, if it wasn't a shooting star?

Jody stood up and walked over to Dean. She rubbed his arm in a motherly, calming gesture, "So guess what? It looks like you might be leaving tomorrow morning! Amelia said she's nearly positive about it. Only a few more hours in this place!"

"I can't feel you touching me," Dean said with a hollow voice. Jody flinched and slowly pulled her arm away.

"Sorry," Dean whispered. There was an awkward silence as everyone was unsure what they could possibly say.

Sam coughed, "Speaking of Amelia, do you happen to know where she is?"

Dean smirked, "Does little Sammy have a crush on my nurse?"

Jody was beaming, "I think little Sammy does!" She whispered with excitement.

Sam rolled his eyes and scoffed, "Real mature guys."

But they were right.

He left the room and scanned his eyes around the surgery center in search of Amelia. He found her writing some paperwork on a clipboard in the corner.

Sam jogged over to her and combed his fingers through his hair in attempt to tame it. He tapped on her shoulder and she looked up at him. "Hey, Sam," she said with a smile.

Sam took a deep breath, "Hey, Amelia, I was wondering if I could, uh..." She nodded and it gave him some confidence, "Maybe I take you to dinner some time?"

"Are you trying to ask me out?" She joked with mock surprise.

"I was hoping that was obvious," Sam raised an eyebrow.

She looked to make sure her boss or manager wasn't watching while she talked to Sam, "I'm off tomorrow night. If that's okay with you?"

Sam nodded, "Uh yeah, that sounds great! Can I get your number?"

He held out his phone and she took it, quickly entering her number and address. She slipped it back in his hand, "My address is in there too. Pick me up at 7."

She smiled at him and walked away. Sam grinned to himself and stared down at his phone. She was a nice girl and he didn't want to screw this one up. He walked back into Dean's room with the biggest, goofiest smile he could possibly make spread across his face.

"Hey, what'd I miss?" Sam asked as he sat down.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like little Sammy Winchester got himself a date," Dean announced with pride.

"I never said that," Sam told him, but he couldn't help grinning.

Dean chuckled, "Fuck yeah! That's my boy!"

Jody exclaimed, "I knew you two would hit it off!"

Bobby patted him on the back, "Nice job, Romeo."

Amelia came into the room, "Hey, Dean, is there anything I can get you? Any dinner or something to drink? The remote for your tv?"

"Can I get a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a slice of cherry pie? And I'll take the clicker for the tv," Dean said.

She looked at him, "Um, we have a very tasteless beef patty and a Kraft American single on frozen bread. I can get you the remote and a poor excuse for American cuisine, but if you want an edible burger, your family will have to go out and get it for you."

Dean looked to Jody with a puppy dog expression, begging for her to get the food. She rolled her eyes, "Fine. I'll be back in twenty. Bobby, wanna come with me?"

He stood up and they both walked out together. Amelia went through the closet and came back with the remote, handing it to Sam. She whispered, "You'll have to control the remote and feed him as well. He won't be able to do so himself."

Sam nodded and watched as she walked away. Her curly hair continued to bounced with every step she took. He sat down beside Dean, "So, dude, what do you wanna watch?"

Dean rolled his eyes, "Just hand me the clicker."

"But I don't think you'll be able to use it..."

"We both know what happened earlier. I squeezed your hand. Maybe my hands are working. Can't I at least try, Sam?"

Sam slid the remote into his hand and sure enough-Dean was moving his thumb the tiniest bit to channel surf on the tv for Dr. Sexy. Sam shook his head in disbelief, "That's amazing! It's actually working!"

Dean looked at Sam with a confused expression, "What's working?"

Sam quickly replied, "Uh nothing. I just can't believe your thumb is even moving."

Dean grinned, "Maybe if we give it some more time, eventually my entire hand'll work like new again! Huh, Sammy? Of course, that's a hell of a long shot, but hey! Have a little faith, right?"

Sam was still in shock, "Yeah, just have a little faith," he echoed.
