5: THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH
Meanwhile
Simon is alone at the park. It is after 9:00 and everyone has gone home. A car pulls up and Simon's parents scramble out and run over to him.
His mom is hysterical, "Where have you been! We were worried sick." She stops and looks around.
"Where's Hank?"
Simon thinks for a minute, deciding that now is the time, "Hank can talk. He was taken by some guys in a van who are probably going to kill him. So I've been here waiting-"
Simon's dad interrupts, "What do you mean he can talk?"
"You know, like humans do," Simon replies. "He can also play video games and stuff."
"How is that possible, he's a dog."
"Yeah, he's a dog, but he's... different," Simon tells his mom, voice rising. "You have to believe me!"
"I'm sorry Simon," his dad says, "but I don't think I can."
"Neither can I."
Simon is now furious. His dog is gone and his parents won't believe what happened to him.
"I'm not lying! Hank can talk. I got him because he wanted me to get him out of the shelter."
"Honey," his mom says, resting a hand on his shoulder. "Dogs don't talk. You just have an overactive imagination. Now where is Hank."
"He was taken away in a van. I saw it drive away with him."
Simon's parents look at each other and turn around to have a conversation.
"Maybe Hank was taken. Simon's probably making up the talking part."
"It could be, but how do we find him? If he was taken, would putting up fliers even matter?"
Simon interrupts the conversation. "We can't just put up fliers. Hank's not a normal dog!"
"We get it. We'll put up fliers, maybe even some ads in the paper. But you have to understand, Hank can't talk," Simon's dad says, turning to face him.
Simon is on the verge of tears, "It's not just about him being able to talk, he's my best friend. We have to get him back.
