Chapter Four
The slow moving mist was covering the other cloud islands.
Christopher was lying on his back and watched it through the dome. It never got dark; there was no night time here.
He was very tired. He had been going through every little detail of his loved ones faces on earth in his mind, trying not to forget anything until he learned how to visit them.
He jumped to his feet; he had to train. He jumped up and started flapping his wings as hard as he could. Small drops of sweat were starting to form on his forehead. The wings felt heavy on his shoulders.
The last two days he was flapping them as long as he could after Maister released him from their daily lessons. To fly was harder than he had initially thought it would be. Every day he pushed himself to fly a bit longer.
It was now time for his physical workout. He started with a simple combination of a front and back kick. Then he moved on to a roundhouse kick and some punches.
It felt good, he put more force into the kicks and punches. He felt strong, decided to try a simple kick while airborne. As he swung his leg upward, his whole body took a flip and he fell flat on his face.
"Fuck," he groaned, while he slowly pushed himself up again.
"Language young man." Christopher turned around and faced a very stern female cloudsoldier.
"Apologies Miss," he said, and at the same time contemplated whether he should ask for her help or just go and find himself a quieter place to practice.
"Lily."
"They're ok I guess if you are into flowers."
"No, my name is Lily," she clarified.
Christopher's mouth formed a silent "O" he couldn't believe how absentminded he was to make such a mistake.
"Christopher."
"Want some help Christopher with your fly kicks?"
"Yeah, that was the first time I tried that..." He replayed the whole move in his head yet he could not figure out what he did wrong.
"You put too much force in your kick and didn't use your wings to counter it, so you tipped over. Here, look at me and pay attention to the wing movement."
She swiftly jumped two meters off the ground, back flipped her entire body and as soon as her right leg came out for the kick her, wings opened slightly. She landed softly on her left knee and dusted herself off as she stood on her feet. "Your turn," she announced.
He mentally went through her movements and tried his wings for that slight stretch.
He jumped up flipped his body and kicked out his leg. Bam, he fell flat on his face again.
"Ok, you need to coordinate your body movements with your wings. It's not as easy as it seems," she said.
"You think Sherlock?" He mumbled under his breath.
"Hey, you want to learn or to keep falling flat on your ass and face all day long?" She scolded him.
He simply stared at her. "Well?" She insisted.
After a few minutes went by where neither of them backed down from their staring match he gave up. He needed to learn. He needed to be at top performance if he was to see his family again.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"Good. So let's try your body-wing coordination on the ground this time."
Lily had him practicing kicks and punches in combination with wing flap at various lengths. She had him there for an hour. He felt as if his wings were going to be ripped off of his shoulders.
"Want me to carry you back?" She mocked him with one eyebrow raised and a smirk on her face.
