Chapter Three

Silverdust waited nervously as she waited underneath the stage in her vehicle form, her holoform waiting beside it in order to put up an image to the other humans there that the vehicles beside them were just that. Vehicles.

One of the humans came up to her, and she frowned. He was a redhead, and had a smirk on his face.

"Hey, gorgeous", he flirted. "Name's Kade. What's yours?"

"Irrelevant to you", she replied, narrowing her eyes. "Now, Chief Burns will be starting soon, so get back to your assigned vehicle."

Kade had a shocked look on his face, but he listened. Over her com-link, she could hear Heatwave laughing.

"You showed him up", Heatwave chuckled. Silverdust lightly smiled and replied.

"Good luck working with him, Heatwave."

"How do you know I'm going to be working with him?"

"His outfit. He's a firefighter. You're a firetruck. The two tend to go hand in hand."

Heatwave groaned, but was unable to say anything as each Autobot and human began to be lifted up. Silverdust blinked as her eyes came into contact with the sunlight, and she watched as she stood in front of the people of Griffin Rock.

"Robots", Chief Burns calls. "Transform!"

Silverdust obeys, allowing her vehicle form to become a robot form, though she knew she wouldn't be able to hold her holoform for very long.

"These robotic rescue vehicles will streamline our resources", Chief Burns continued. "Now one human teamed with one robot can do the job of an entire police force-" he gestured to Chase. "-fire department-" Kade stepped forward, a smirk on his face again. "-emergenct response unit-" a female stepped forward, smiling and holding her helmet. "-engineering core-" the only other human male she had seen stepped forward, a tablet in hand. "and search and rescue!"

Silverdust's holoform stepped forward, and she smiled shyly at the crowd. She turned her attention back to Chief Burns as he spoke. She moved to stand beside him at the same time the others did.

"Each robot is programmed to respond only to the commands of its handler, so you can sleep at night knowing that Griffin Rock is protected by the very best technology and humanity has to offer!"

Silverdust flinched softly at the loud cheers, the sounds amplified in both her audio receptors and her holoform's ears. She silently cursed Ratchet. 'Ratchet, why didn't you make it so that you wouldn't hear sound in both forms?'

A photographer came up with a camera, and took a photo of the group together before making his way over to Silverdust.

"And who may you be?" he asked in a very reportery-ish voice as he help a microphone out to her. Silverdust groaned softly, but responded, knowing the public would like to know who she was. She smiled as she looked at the camera that was recording.

"My name is Silvia Burns. I'm a distant cousin to Chief Burns", she answered.

The reporter turned to the camera. "A new Burns? This will be interesting. How are the other Burnses taking it?"

They both turn to look at the other Burnses, and none of them are moving. She sighs softly, glad that they didn't hear her. While Chief Burns helped her come up with that cover story, it wasn't exactly foolproof, and would need the others in on it. Which would be difficult, seeing as she was not actually related to them in any way. Not even remotely close.

Luckily, the reporter was distracted by Chief Burns recieving a call through his com-link. In a few seconds, Chief Burns turned the rest of the group.

"We got a fire at the natural history museum", he said seriously. Heatwave instantly transformed, ready to get going and save lives. Silverdust couldn't help but smile in amusement.

"I didn't tell it to do that", Kade said in surprise. Chief Burns was quick to cover up Heatwave's mistake.

"It's new technology, son. Bound to be some bugs", Chief Burns says, before turning to Chase.

"Police bot, transform", he says. Chase immediately does so, and Chief climbs in. Silverdust's holoform turns to look at her real body, knowing she's going to have to turn off her holoform soon. She was just glad she had tinted windows, so no one would be able to tell that there was no one flying the plane.

"S and R robot, tranform", she commanded, which felt weird, since she was talking to herself. She quickly transformed, and allowed her holoform to climb inside, before closing the cockpit and allowing her holoform to disappear.

"I'm sure that feels better", Heatwave spoke over their private com-link.

"Definitely. While my holoform does have its uses, it is really uncomfortable to be in it for too long."

Heatwave chuckles, before going silent, obviously paying more attention to the human inside him than the silver femme who was taking off into the air. Silverdust relished the feel of the wind brushing past her wings, the feel of it incredible.

Silverdust flew over the natural history museum, scanning for life signals of humans. She counted one, and immediately let Kade.

"Kade, this is Silvia. I'm reading one life signal inside, you need to get them out of there before the fire gets worse", she said. She watched as Kade dropped his hose, and ran inside. She directed him to the life signal, and watched as they both got out safely. She then watched as he picked up the hose, and started to spray the fire again with water.

Once they put out the fire, Silverdust landed in the road outside once pedestrians cleared the way. She couldn't land as easy as Blades could, nor could she take off as well. Being a plane is difficult since she'll need a runway if she's going to have to act like a robot around the Burns family. She took take off easy enough in bot form, but in vehicle form... not so much.

Her holoform activated as she opened her cockpit, allowing her to jump out. She watched as Kade and Heatwave finally got the fire out and walked inside after Chief Burns, who was talking with the engineering core guy. She watched in silence, knowing that if she spoke her voice might come out crackly. She hadn't used her holoform for this long of a period of time in a long time, and her power was draining quickly.

She heard a creaking, and flinched when she looked up and saw a dinosaur head falling towards Chief Burns and the other guy. She saw Heatwave catch and smiled softly.

She heard Kade saying something in the background, but was too focused on trying not to have her holoform flicker that she didn't hear it. She could see Heatwave's concerned look, but opted to ignore it. She hadn't even used it for that long, and she was straining. She may need to talk with Ratchet about finding some way to let her use it longer. She would be a pretty lousy rescuer if she couldn't use her holoform.

Taking a deep breath, she started shifting away from the team, though trying to catch Chief Burns  gaze at the same time. She managed to get behind them, and relaxed slightly, knowing they wouldn't be able to see her if she flickered.

And flicker she did. She flickered a couple of times before it steadied out, her spark finally calming enough to send the correct amount of power to her holoform. She heard a gasp, and turned to look, seeing a young boy with blonde hair staring at her. She smiled softly, and held a finger up to her lips. He nodded, and she quickly walked away to her alternate mode. Once the cockpit slid over, she allowed her holoform to disappear.

"Yep", she growled, her voice still slightly crackly. "Definitely need to talk with Ratchet about extended the power to my holoform."

Heatwave chuckled. "I noticed you were struggling to hold it up there. Good thing we'll be heading out soon."

Silverdust let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness. Then I can talk with Ratchet and then rest."

Heatwave was silent, and she assumed that it was because the Burnses were coming out of the museum. She received a call from Chief Burns via Chase.

"Silverdust?" Chief Burns asked. "You alright there?"

"Peachy", her voice crackled. Chief looked concerned.

"I think there might be static interfering with our connection, Silverdust laughed, the sound menacing with all the crackling.

"There's no static", she said. "My voice box just doesn't have enough power to sustain itself at the moment. Just give me a few hours to rest, and I'll be good."

Chief Burns nods, and the connection ended. She followed Blades back to the place they would be staying and found a place to land, though it was difficult. She landed out front and then rolled the plane into the garage. The driveway was just long enough for her to get a rough landing, but she managed to make due with what she had. Silverdust activated her holoform, and watched as all the others headed upstairs. Chief Burns paused by the elevator, and turned to Silverdust.

"Silvia, do you want to come up with us, or stay down here?" he asked. Silverdust smiled gently.

"I think I'll stay down here with the bots", she grinned. "Who knows what kind of trouble they'll into."

She glanced at Heatwave as she spoke, and Chief Burns chuckled. He nodded, and smiled.

"Come up when you're ready", he said. Silverdust nodded, and watched as the elevator door closes. As soon as the elevator is out of sight, Silverdust's holoform instantly disappears and she transforms. She stretches, her body stiff from having not moved for a while. Then she yawned, her energy stores having been nearly depleted.

"Do we have any energon around here?" she couldn't help but ask. The other Autobots transformed, agreeing with her about getting some energon. Heatwave sighed before moving over to some controls.

"Chief said there was a bunker below the garage. Maybe there's some energon down there. If not, we'll have to talk to Optimus about bringing some here", Heatwave grumbled. Silverdust smiled and watched as a part of the floor started moving downward. She was quick to move onto it, and she smiled as the bunker was revealed. It was old, and dusty, but it would be good for recharging in. She smiled happily, and began to search around for any energon. She found a small store down the hallway, but not enough to last them more than a few days. She frowned, knowing it would be difficult for the Autobots in Jasper to find energon for both their team, and the Rescue Bots.

Sighing, she gathered up a few cubes, and brought them out to the others, who were looking around.

"Here's some cubes, guys", she mumbled. "Unfortunately, we only have enough to last for a few days."

Heatwave frowned. "Maybe Optimus could send some to us every so often?"

"No!" Silverdust instantly shouted, glancing at Heatwave. His annoyed look made her glance at the ground and she spoke submissively.

"They need all the energon they find. With them being on the field against the Decepticons all the time, they just don't have enough. And I know their medic depletes his stores just so the others can have enough", Silverdust says, scuffing her pede against the ground gently.

Heatwave sighs softly. "So what do you propose we do?"

Silverdust frowned as she handed out the energon to everyone, before taking a sip of her own. She felt her systems recuperating slowly and she looked into Heatwave's optics. "I can search for energon. I have a scanner in my alternate form, and I can do flyovers to find energon. When we're not need by the humans, of course."

Heatwave sighed softly, but it was Chase who spoke. "We'd best talk this over with Chief first."

After a while, Heatwave began to become more and more frustrated, and started taking it out on a wooden dummy he found, raised up on a platform.

Silverdust made sure to steer clear of him, and took to sitting against a wall to rest her systems. After several minutes of Heatwave punching the dummy, the red Rescue Bot finally spoke up.

"Optimus or no Optimus, I don't know how long I can put up with this. Ordered around-", punch, "-others taking the credit." He punched the dummy twice. "Having to pretend we're tin cans." He growled angrily as he punched the metal platform he stood on. Silverdust sighed softly, and stood up, ready to intervene, just as Optimus had instructed her to do. It was her job to make sure the bots and humans got along, and she sure as heck wasn't going to let Optimus down. She had done it once before, and she didn't want to see the disappointment in his optics again.

She sighed sadly as she thought about that, but focused her attention on what was occurring in front of her.

Blades was in the middle of talking. "-nice being a part of an emergency response again."

"I find our Chief quite competent", Chase says as he wipes his arm off with a cloth. Silverdust smiled. 'At least he's not as vain as Knockout.'

"There is much he can teach us about Earth's law enforcement procedure", Chase continues. Silverdust smiled. She decided she would not have to worry about Chase seeing as he and Chief seemed to get along well. Blades she wasn't worried about either, his partner just had to learn to work with him, and he had to learn to listen to his partner more.

Boulder spoke up, and she listened intently in order to gauge how difficult he would be in terms of getting along with a human partner. In the end, she decided he would be able to work well with a human, he just needed to not get so distracted by other stuff.

Heatwave was the only one that was going to be tricky to work with, since he already did not like his partner, and was not wanting to be here. She would gladly take over, but that was not her mission, and Heatwave was assigned to his own. For now, she would just focus on keeping everything running smoothly, which included looking for energon.

Heatwave let out a frustrated yell and jumped down from his platform. "I'm leaving", he growled. Silverdust's optics widened, and she opened her mouth to speak, but Boulder beat her to it.

"You can't leave", the green mech said. "You're our leader!"

Heatwave scoffed. "Then we'll all go. Those humans will never understand us. We'll never belong."

"I know what you mean", a new voice piped up. Silverdust glanced down and saw the same blonde haired boy from the museum and smiled, knowing he already knew their secret. Or at least part of it.

Silverdust chuckled softly as her companions went into their 'robot' mode. She knew it was no use and instead leaned against the wall, a small smirk on her face.

"Don't bother", the kid said. "You're not fooling anybody. Trust me. Living in Griffin Rock, I know robots. And you guys? Worst robots I've ever seen."

The others all relaxed, though Chase's words sort of stirred them up. Silverdust sighed as Chase spoke.

"We failed at our mission. Our cover is blown", he said. "If this human knows, he'll tell the others."

Silverdust smiled as the young human spoke excitedly. "Are you kidding? And waste the chance to know something they don't? Something this huge? I'm the best thing that could've happened to your mission, 'cause I'm going to teach you everything you need to know about Earth."

"Can you teach me how to make my human stop yelling?" Blades asked.

"Dani?" the kid asked. "I don't think anyone can do that."

Silverdust snorted, and her optics narrowed softly. This kid could be useful in her mission. He could be her human partner and then she wouldn't have to use a holoform unless she was outside.

"I'm Cody, by the way", the kid stuck out his hand. Blade held out one of his digits and they shook hands.

"I'm Blades", the orange and white mech says.

"Boulder."

"Classified."

Silverdust snorted at Chase's reply. The kid was just going to find out anyway.

"That's Chase", Boulder informed as Heatwave stepped forward.

"And I'm Heatwave", the red mech spoke. "So, Cody, now that you know what we are, name one good reason why we shouldn't leave this planet right now."

Silverdust sighed, stepping forward. "Heatwave, stop yelling. You could scare the kid."

Heatwave only glared at the silver femme, while Cody stared up at her.

"You're... wow", Cody says, in awe. Silverdust smiled.

"I'm Silverdust", she said. "Also known as Silvia Burns to your family."

Cody's mouth dropped open. "How did you human form flicker?"

Silverdust chuckled. "It's called a holoform. And it flickered because I didn't have enough power to use it for a long amount of time, and I had already used it for longer than I should have. Which is why I need to speak to the Autobot medic in Nevada about extended the power."

Cody's eyes kept widening, but he turned back to Heatwave. "To answer your question, follow me!"

Silverdust smiled as they were led to a tunnel, but she decided to stay. "I'll stay, and see if I can communicate with Ratchet about my holoform."

Heatwave nods, and Silverdust watches as they leave through the tunnel. She smiles softly, before turning to look further into the bunker and see if she can't find a good communications array. To her surprise, she was able to find a room filled with Cybertronian equipment ready for communication. She smiled, guessing that Optimus had sent this ahead. She quickly got to work in typing in what she knew to be the best way to contact Ratchet.

After a few minutes of waiting, Optimus' face appeared on the screen before her.

"Silverdust", Optimus greeted. "How are things going over there?"

Silverdust smiled. "They're going great. Chase is getting along well with his human partner, and with a few adjustments, I think Boulder and Blades will get along with their partners well."

"And what about Heatwave?" the Prime asked. Silverdusr frowned.

"He's a bit hotheaded, but he means well. He doesn't like people taking the credit that belonged to him, which means it will be difficult for him to work with his partner, as Kade likes to take all the credit for himself."

Optimus hummed. "Do you think you'll be able to help them get along?"

Silverdust frowned. "With a little help, yes. Earlier tonight, we were discovered by Chief Burns' youngest son, who has already been a great help in getting the bots to calm down. I suspect I will begin working with him closely."

Optimus nods. "It seems everything is going well over there, and you are well equipped to handle this mission."

"Thanks, Optimus. I'm glad you think so. But there is one problem. I need to talk to Ratchet about it."

Optimus frowned. "Ratchet is... occupied at the moment. But I can pass along a message if need be."

Silverdust nodded. "That will work. My holoform doesn't have enough power for me to use consistently. I was using it for maybe thirty minutes at most today, and I was losing power to it rapidly. Can you ask Ratchet if there is any way to boost the power?"

Optimus nods. "I shall ask when he is not busy."

Silverdust bites back a laugh, though a small smirk appeared on her face. "Since when is Uncle Ratchet not busy?"

Optimus smiled softly. "When he is less busy, I suppose should say."

Silverdust smiled as amusement twinkled in Optimus' optics.

"Is Bumblebee there? I promised him I'd try and talk with him as much as I can", Silverdust asked softly. Optimus' smile disappears, and Silverdust frowned.

"Bumblebee is the reason why Ratchet is busy", Optimus murmured. "A few hours after you left, Bumblebee and Bulkhead returned from a scouting mission. Bumblebee was unable to transform. Ratchet is currently trying to figure out what is going on."

Silverdust frowned. She knew Bumblebee relied on his wheels a lot, and she knew how much he hated not being able to transform. She sighed softly, and smiled up at Optimus.

"Alright. I guess I'll just talk to him later. Thanks, Si- Optimus."

Optimus smiled softly. "You are most welcome, my dear daughter."

Silverdust smiled up at her Sire before ending the call. She exited the communications room and found a good spot to lay down and rest, knowing her systems needed it. Unfortunately, an alarm went off, and she immediately knew that she would be needed. She went up to the garage, and found the other humans getting to a different car that she hadn't seen before. She smiled at Chief Burns befor running outside. She jumped up, transformed and took off, immediately searching for her fellow Autobots life signals. She found them quickly, and flew above them, connecting her com-link to all the others.

"Hey, guys", she said. "Mind if I join the party?"

"Silverdust!" Blades said in surprise. "Are we glad to see you!"

"Where are the humans?" Heatwave asked.

"Coming", Silverdust responded, finally noticing the robot dinosaur. "What's going on with Mr. Dinobot over here?"

"Not sure, and we're not going to find out until the Chief gets here. For now, let's split up once we get the dinosaur away from the city."

Silverdust doesn't reply and continues to follow them until they get out into the forest, where they split up and cut off all noise, except for Silverdust who flew up higher. She did a quick scan for energon, just so she could collect it later, and then went back down to join the others, transforming mid-air so she could land on her pedes. Chief Burns showed up a few minutes later, and Kade instantly went to Heatwave, opening the door.

"Cody?" he asked. "You jacked my ride?"

"Listen", Cody says. "The t-rex likes lights. I think you should-"

Kade cuts him off. "Less talk, more action."

He drove off, and Silverdust sighed. "Cody, don't worry about him. He'll understand eventually."

Cody smiled up at the silver femme, before turning to his father.

The other Rescue Bots focused on the dinobot while Chief and Silverdust got Cody into the old car the humand had come in.

"Stay here, son", Chief says, and closes the door so Cody would be safe. Silverdust crouched down and looked at Cody through the windshield.

"I can connect my optic feed to your com-tab so you can see what's going on", Silverdust said. Cody nodded and pulled out his com-tab. Silverdust quickly connected her optic feed to it before jumping up and using the boosters on her back to push her up and over to the dinosaur. She could hear Cody talking to the others over the com-link, but ignored it in favor of watching the  Rescue Bots with the robo-dino.

She felt her optics drift to Heatwave, and shook her head, focusing on the mission at hand. If Cody noticed her looking, that would be something she would never live down. And in all honesty, she had no idea why her optics drifted to the leader of the Rescue Bots.

She watched as Cody gave instructions, causing Heatwave, Boulder and Blades to veer off and head back into town. She didn't follow them and instead kept her focus on the dinosaur, with Chase having it, well, chase him.

Finally, Heatwave transformed, and hit his lights and sirens, catching the dinobot's attention. It charged at him, and he caught it and threw it over his shoulder in a pit of mud that Kade had made. The dino tried to get up, but failed several times, causing Silverdust to laugh. Blades and Dani caged the dinosaur, and Silverdust smiled as Cody slid down into the pit, finding a switch and turning to dinosaur off. She brought herself closer to the ground, and then completely cut off all power to her boosters.

"What now, Chief?" she asks. He smiled.

"We take it back to the museum", he said. Blades lifted the cage off the dinosaur and Silverdust walked over to it. It was bigger than her and she frowned.

"Uh... Chief? How are we going to take it back to the museum?"

Chief shrugged and Silverdust sighed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silverdust sighed as she looked at the mud that covered her frame. She was utterly exhausted and just ready to sleep. They were outside the museum however, which meant that she had to activate her holoform, and focus all her energy into not letting it flicker. She knew she had to get home soon, and so she waited impatiently for the other humans to come back out.
Finally they did, and were about to leave when Chief spoke up. "Wait", he said. "I want to get a picture of my heroes." He set the camera to hover mode while Cody looked down and started to walk away, but Chief stopped him. "All my heroes."
Kade raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Oh, come on, Dad. Just because Cody answered one rescue call doesn't mean he's part of the team. And who even is Silvia? Why is she all of the sudden on the team?"
"Yes, it does", Heatwave defended, causing Kade to let out a shocked yelp. Silverdust chuckled as Heatwave moved forward. "Or we're not." There more startled gasps as the other humans moved away from Cody as Heatwave placed a hand on Cody's back.
"Cody is our liaison to our mission. He's the reason we're even giving this place a chance", Heatwave glared at Kade. "And Silvia? Well, I'll let her explain that. Are we clear?"
Kade yelped and ran to the Chief. "Dad, did this thing just talk back to me?"
"Something's definitely wrong with the robots", Dani said.
"We can't use technology prone to malfunction", Graham- as Silverdust had learned- added.
"They're not malfunctioning", Chief says as a ping sounds through the air, letting them know the camera was ready. "They're aliens."
Silverdust saw the camera flash just as her holoform flickered, causing even more surprised shouts from the humans. She grinned softly.
"And Silvia doesn't exist", she said, before disappearing as soon as she knew no one was around. "She's me. And Cody is my partner now. Just as you are partners with one of my fellow 'aliens', Cody will be my partner. I will help him with any calls, as well as giving directions to you guys as you may need it."
Silverdust laughed at the surprised looks on the three humans faces that didn't know. She smiled as she was about to transform, only to have her vision start to go black. She shook her helm, and it helped slightly. She frowned and checked her energon stores to find them nearly depleted, even after the cube she had drunk earlier.
"Scrap", she hissed, gaining the others attention. She swayed softly, and looked to Heatwave, fear in her optics.
She tried speaking, but her voice box was losing power quickly as her spark tried to give fuel to her other systems.
"-energon stores- depleted- losing- help!" She started to fall forward, but Heatwave was quick to catch her. He turned to Blades.
"We need to get her back to the firehouse, and we need to contact the medic", he ordered. "Now!"
The other Autobors transformed and allowed their human counterparts to ride with them. Boulder drove over to Heatwave.
"Put her in my scoop. She won't fall out, and we can get her to the firehouse faster."
Heatwave nodded and gently placed his teammate with Boulder. Then he transformed and allowed Kade to get in, but didn't let him drive as he had before. They got to the firehouse in record time, and once Kade was out of Heatwave's vehicle mode, Heatwave transformed and took the silver and black femme into his arms, quickly going down to the bunker, the others following him. Heatwave set her down on the ground, and turned to Boulder and Blades.
"You two- watch her vitals! Make sure they don't go any lower. Chase- get her some energon in case she wakes up! I'm going to go contact the medic."
Everyone was moving quickly, and Heatwave quickly rushed to where he knew the communications room was. He called the Autobots on the other side of the country and impatiently waited for them to respond. He was glad when they did and he instantly started ranting at the mech who stood there. He was orange and white, and had an unimpressed look on his face.
"We need a medic now. Silverdust's energon stores are depleted, and she is out cold", Heatwave snarled. The mech's optics widen and he is instantly talking.
"I will be there in a few minutes. Make sure she doesn't use any more energy", the mech said before closing the communication. Heatwave huffed, and went back out to the main room of the bunker, where a ground bridge opened shortly after.
The orange and white mech stepped through, followed by Optimus Prime. Instantly Heatwave was standing at attention until the Prime said "at ease".
Heatwave watched as the white and orange mech shoved everyone away from the silver and black femme. He immediately  took the energon cube that was sitting next to the femme and poured into a weird tube contraption that he then stuck into her arm. Once all the energon was into her systems, he scanned her.
He sighed. "She'll be fine for now. Just don't let her go on any missions for a while. She needs to rest. I will come back in a few days to update her holoform system. It appears that that was the core of the problem as it was taking up too much of her energy."
Heatwave nodded, and watched as Silverdust began to stir. She groaned softly as the white and orange mech turned on a flashlight to look into her optics.
"Uncle Ratchet?" she muttered. "What are you doing?"
"Making sure you haven't harmed your processor from lack of energon in your stores", the medic retorted. "You should know better than that!"
Silverdust only hummed in response as Ratchet turned off the flashlight. She looked around and frowned, her optics stopping Heatwave. Her processor slightly delirious from lack of fuel, she smiled at the red mech and whispered to herself.
"He's really cute."
Ratchet froze and followed her line of sight before chuckling to himself softly. This was something he was going to keep to himself for now, and possibly use to threaten his niece playfully. He stood up, and turned to Optimus.
"She'll be fine for now. Just make sure she rests, Heatwave." Heatwave nods, and watches as the two mechs leave through the same ground bridge they came through.
"Come on, Silverdust", Heatwave spoke as he picked her up. "Let's get you somewhere quiet so you can rest easier."
Boulder and Blades shared a knowing glance, knowing exactly what was going to happen between the two. It was just a matter of when.
