Katya Duval lived a life of secrets and wars. She woke every morning and applied a seamless mask without thinking twice about the weak crumbling girl beneath her flesh and bone, crying out to be acknowledged.

     Her fathers death had occurred many moons ago, and Katya had gone unphased, not a tear shed. She had always been terrified of her father, terrified didn't even describe the pain she felt when her eyes set on the man, a man who had created and formed the horrid creature she hid every day, the one who told her she was an irritating waste of space.

     Katya's mother was her entire world, the idea of the woman being hurt was possibly more painful than the image of her brooding death father. But unlike her daughter, Maria Duval had not seen through her husbands crude actions, she was blindsided by his beauty and the love he may have had for her ( Katya was never sure it was a thing. )

       Ever since the fateful day — November fourth, 1970 — Maria had been different, yet Katya seemed to be the only one to notice. The only one to pick up on the way her mother's smile faltered at her daughter's sight, the way her eyes twitched at her own reflection.

Young Katya vowed to herself two things the day before she began Hogwarts on the first of September 1971. One, she would protect her mother at all costs, whether that coast was money or her own life. Two, she would never fall for the same trap her Maria Duval did: love.
