Chapter 10- Fishermen

Merlin’s eyes darted around trying to keep track of Arthur in the heat of the battle. All around him the sound of steel against steal and the cries of men rang out. Morgana had managed to push up into the lower town but had hit a stand still as more and more knights tried to push them back. Suddenly Merlin noticed Morgana’s men began to clear a little and the knights immediately took advantage and tried to surge forwards, Arthur at the head. However they soon stopped in their tracks as they saw what the enemy had been clearing for. Merlin felt a lump form in his throat and tears suddenly spring to his eyes as he saw the creature, tied up in chains, men following it, poking and prodding it, forcing it forwards. He recognized the animal, he had seen one before. “Freya.” He whispered as he watched the terrified huge black winged cat. Part of him knew it couldn’t be Freya, she was dead, at the bottom the lake, but then part of him felt it could only be her. He shook his head, trying to clear it. In all the time he had been thinking the terrified creature had been defending its self against the knights and Arthur.  Merlin watched in horror as the large, black, clawed paw of the beast swung into Arthur, knocking him to the ground.

“Bandages.” Gaius said holding out a hand towards Robin, not talking his eyes of his patient. Robin sighed, passing across the white linin as she gazed out of the window. She could see the glint of the sun shining off the metal and hear the cries of battle. She wanted to be out there, she needed to be out there. She needed to wipe that smug look of her husband’s face, off the woman who had captured his heart’s face, she needed her revenge. Surely Camelot needed every able fighter it could get! She looked down at the man on the table, his face screwed up in pain as Gaius tended to his injury’s. He looked to be no more than 18, maybe 19, a still practically a boy! Yet he was allowed to fight.  “Robin, would you please fetch me some fresh water.” Gaius said, still not moving his eyes up. “Ok.” Robin said with a sigh before weaving her way through the sea of injured men and out into the courtyard.

Merlin rushed through the crowd to where Arthur lay, Leon, Percival and Gwaine in front of him, trying to protect the injured king. “Percival! Get him to Gaius! Quickly!” Merlin yelled, trying to haul Arthur up. Percival grabbed Arthur’s legs and pulled him up over his shoulders, keeping a firm grip on his sword. Leon turned and tried to make way for Percival and Arthur through the crowed as Merlin joined Gwaine in front of the beast. “We can’t kill it.” Gwaine cried over the sound of the battle. Merlin was confused, “What? No they can be killed!” Merlin said, images of Freya  flashing through his mind. “Well, this one can’t!” Gwaine yelled, swinging his sword at the beast as it’s paw came inches from them. It howled in pain as spears were thrown at it and it was pushed forwards from behind and Merlin felt his heart ache of the creature. “Morgana must have done something to it.” Merlin thought allowed.

“Can you undo it?” Gwaine asked and Merlin shrugged.

“I don’t know.” Merlin said as they had to duck and coward backwards as the beast swiped at them again. “Well hurry up and know!” Gwaine cried.

“Ok, ok.” Merlin said before focusing his attention on the creature, Gwaine protecting him from the battle around them, as he tried to put the poor creature out of its misery.

Robin looked up from the well to see Percival carrying Arthur over his shoulder, with Leon close behind. She watched, intrigued as Percival began to carry Arthur into the castle, leaving Leon to catch his breath briefly before turning and returning to the battle. It took Robin a split second to make her choice. She dropped the bucket of water and followed Leon into the battle.

The creature was retreating, pushing back, trampling the men that pushed it on, trying to break free of the chains. Merlin couldn’t kill it, he didn’t want to, but he could set it free. Suddenly Leon appeared next to them, startling Merlin and causing him to lose concentration. As the men tried to keep the beast under control Elyan’s voice rang out over the sound of the battle. “Retreat into the Citadel!” And the knights began to back towards the large wooden gates. Merlin and Gwaine however stayed still. “Come on!” Leon yelled at them.

“No! There is something I need to do! You go!” Merlin called but Leon shook his head.

“No! Come on!” Leon yelled.

“Leon!” Gwaine barked. “Go!”

“Whatever it is, I will help! I am not leaving you out here! They are going to shut the gates!” Leon said, knights flowing past them, back towards the large wooden doors. Gwaine sighed. “Merlin, he is right, we need to go!” He said, turning to Merlin who was once again muttering under his breathing, watching the beast’s chains slowly begin to bend out of shape. The last of the knights pasted them and Morgana’s army was upon them. “Merlin!” Gwaine cried, grabbing Merlin by the arm and pulling him back towards the gates. They ran as fast as they could, Morgana’s army hot on their heels, the doors beginning to close in front of them. Merlin was exhausted from trying to set the creature free, those chains had been enchanted, no doubt about that. He pushed his body as far as it would go, forcing his legs on, but they weren’t face enough. Leon slammed up against the wood and began beating it with his hands, soon joined by Gwaine. Merlin just stood and stared at the wall of wood in front of them before turning to see the ugly faces of Morgana’s men, smiling down at their catch. They were fishermen, and they had just caught three fish.

So sorry for updating in such a long time! i have decided from now on i will try and post every saturday! right well.....battle....where is Robin? Is Arthur ok? Is Griffin ok? (remember Griffin is currently in the form for the creature...) and what will happen to Leon, Gwaine and Merlin?!
