Week 21 - Tapestry of Life

The threads in the warp are tied tight,
Twenty four threads for each man;
Twelve of them for the starry night,
A dozen for the hours a day does span.

But even if  the hours are fixed,
In the warp held by steady Horai;
The weft is of many colours mixed,
And is spun by the frivolous Moirai.

Steadily and firmly these threads do ply,
Each minute a rare and precious gift,
How each hour, to our efforts, we apply
Determines our goal or sets us adrift.

In the eternal cosmic interplay,
Betwixt odds lost and risks taken;
Our life is built each night and day,
By roads followed and paths forsaken.

Destiny is not something set in stone,
Written at the time of we are born;
It evolves from our actions alone,
And with glory, our lives adorn.

Life is choice, chance and circumstance
A tapestry of regrets or memories to rejoice
Woven by the fixed warp of chance
And laced by the weft of firm choice.

Written for Week 21 (May 24, 2020) where we had to write a poem about Destiny.

Notes:

In Greek mythology the Horae (/ˈhɔːriː/) or Horai (/ˈhɔːraɪ/) or Hours (Greek: Ὧραι, Hōrai, pronounced [hɔ̂ːraj], "Seasons") were the goddesses of the seasons and the natural portions of time. The number of Horae varied according to different sources, but was most commonly three: either the trio of Thallo, Auxo and Carpo (goddesses of the order of nature) or Eunomia (goddess of good order and lawful conduct) and her sisters Dike (goddess of Justice) and Eirene (goddess of Peace).

In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Moirai (/ˈmɔɪraɪ, -riː/; Ancient Greek: Μοῖραι, "lots, destinies, apportioners"), often known in English as the Fates (Latin: Fata), Moirae or Mœræ (obsolete), were the white-robed incarnations of destiny; their Roman equivalent was the Parcae (euphemistically the "sparing ones"), and there are other equivalents in cultures that descend from the Proto-Indo-European culture. Their number became fixed at three: Clotho ("spinner"), Lachesis ("allotter") and Atropos ("the unturnable", a metaphor for death).
