PoY 2.1 - Her Favourite Colour...
Her favourite colour is moonlight,
That waxen shimmering silvern hue,
Yet, however hard and long I tried,
The silvery tints would never hold.
I mixed soft titanium white,
Tints of permanent rose and silver,
Ivory moon lay on creamy clouds,
And glistening stars on Mars black skies.
A lovely painting, colours bright,
A pretty picture it was, indeed;
Yet, it was wrong, I knew, when her eyes,
Didn't shine with the joy of moonlight.
So I did it again, a second time,
Taking shades from Nature around;
Raven's wing, mother of pearl, star shine
And summer rose kissed by dew.
Pearly moon rose from silken clouds,
Pink and full, waxed on inky skies;
But the lustre of the moon could not,
Bring a spark of delight in her eyes.
Three's a charm, I would try one last time,
And stole hues from the one I loved.
Sky of ebony tresses, love's blush
White that shone from parted lips.
And when the painting she did behold,
A ecstatic smile she bestowed;
Oh! To my eye, the picture paled,
Beside the glimmer of her joy.
I paint the moon no more, it's futile,
To capture one so fleeting;
Instead I admire the beauty,
When her eyes shine of moonlight.
For Week 2 of the Poet of the Year Contest, we had to write a free style poem, of any length, inspired by the painting of e.e.cummings. My entry is inspired by his painting - Full Moon Behind Tree (Oil on Canvas).
