"You okay?" Taehyung said, letting his keys crash onto the kitchen table as he entered Jeongguk's apartment.
The other man barely flinching at the sound, his eyes wide as he stared at the floor.
They had just come back from a long, two hour dinner where neither of them spoke the entire time. Just the clang of forks, and sad classical music in the background to fill their company.
"Yeah, I'm fine." The dark haired man said, letting out a cough. Though looking dapper in his suit jacket, he didn't exude the same confidence.
Taehyung clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth, hating the strange silence between them. Hating after a month of dating it became like this.
At first they were good.
They were really good.
They had been happy.
But the more they failed at entering back into the friend group, the more Jeongguk seemed to pull away from him.
Taehyung didn't know why. He didn't know the plot behind the man who acted like a scared animal now. Not knowing about the lion that lurked beneath waiting for the right time to get away from it all.
It started out with the younger avoiding kisses.
Then refusing to hold his hand in public.
Not wanting to sleep in the same bed.
Turning down date nights.
And now, this.
Taehyung, slowly started to understand how the younger lost his mind. Feeling the one you love slowly pull away from you was an antagonizing experience.
Especially when you didn't know what you did wrong to deserve the coldness.
The elder didn't know what to do. Or what exactly went wrong. So he went into defense mode. For he wasn't sure how to exactly approach the younger boy about the glaring problems in their relationship.
Jeongguk was all he ever wanted. And he didn't want to lose him because of a stupid fight.
"I don't know, you just seem out of it. You're always out of it anymore." The brunette said calmly, playing with his hands as he avoided his boyfriend's eyes.
Knowing he'd find a glare sent in his direction.
"I think I have a reason to be."
The air grew tense, as Taehyung realized what the boy was referring to.
The whole situation, with Celine and Mia.
The media had taken a frenzy to it, tearing apart the Jeon's.
The police had no other option but to take his two parents into custody. No amount of money could help them out this time.
Jeongguk had to testify against them in court.
But other than that, everything was getting better, for the most part.
He was more like himself again. Not the person his parents wanted him to be.
The person who was refusing to let either of them near Celine or anyone else, was Jimin. He had told everyone that if they reached out to Jeongguk or Taehyung, he would never talk to them again. That is wasn't a threat, but a boundary.
Jeongguk seemed to give up then. But Taehyung was there to be his support.
"It's been a while."
"It still hurts, okay?"
Taehyung used long strides to cross the room, now directly in front of Jeongguk. He took the boys strong hands into his, forcing the younger to look into his hopeful eyes.
Jeongguk tried to look away, but every time the elder would gently lift his chin. A small smile graced his face.
"I'm here to lessen the pain. That's what I've been doing. I'm your boyfriend, you can talk about anything with me."
The black haired man shook his head, eyes wide as he stared up at his fake lover. The one that twisted fate handed him.
Tracing his heart shaped, and delicate face.
Caramel, and cat like eyes.
Long lashes.
Mahogany hair.
The features that would often haunt the younger in his sleep.
Too much like her, and yet he would never be enough.
And it wasn't even working. His old friends barely talked to him. But it wasn't like random girls at the club wouldn't.
That's all he needed. A semblance of normality. The popularity. The glamour.
"I don't think you'd want to hear all that I'm thinking."
Taehyung shook his head, denying the words. Tracing his thumb along the veins that littered Jeongguk's hand.
"We're together for that purpose." He said, softly. Voice breaking a bit at the end.
He knew that to be true.
But did Jeongguk?
It was silent, as the dark haired man hung his head again. Every dark thought in his mind coming to light. The words slipping out before he could frame them in a prettier picture.
"Should we be together?"
Taehyung still had a smile on his face, as the words hung in the air between them. Still rubbing Jeongguk's soft flesh. But as his gaze remained on the younger, and saw the look of uncertainty flash in his eyes, the man became a statue.
Suddenly, his soft features turned to stone. The familiar comfort of his warm skin ripped away from Jeongguk as he stood up.
"What did you just say?" He said, dangerously quiet.
It was obvious, the look of pain and anger on his face.
Jeongguk didn't know how to fix it. For he should try to be honest with the man. He owed him, for everything. Even though he couldn't keep lying much longer.
He didn't want to do this anymore. It didn't serve its useful purpose, this arrangement.
I don't want to hurt you. But I don't even like men.
"You heard me, Taehyung." Jeongguk responded, almost pleading with his voice for him to understand.
The taller man shook his head, a viperous smile appearing on his face. Eyes now swimming with crystalline tears. Jeongguk lifted his hand to wipe them away. He felt bad but Taehyung was a necessary piece in the puzzle.
People liked his friend, trusted him. And it made Jeongguk look redeemable to the public eye.
"You know that's something you can't take back right, saying we shouldn't be together?" The elder spit out, strangely calm.
His hands woven together into tight fists.
Jeongguk swallowed harshly. He wished he could rewind, and erase what he said. He didn't feel like getting into the mushy shît. But he knew they needed to talk.
"Yes I know, but it's not what I meant entirely."
"Then what do you mean?"
Jeongguk pulled at his fingers, tracing the finger prints with his eyes. Imagining a world where everything was simple and already planned out.
That human emotions could be a one way street. And that they didn't branch off and swerve in different directions.
"I'm just not sure, about everything okay? About us. It happened all so quickly. I was in a rough place, you were as well and I think we rushed into this entirely too fast."
"You didn't stop us from going too fast when we had sex, did you now?" Taehyung stated harshly, slamming his hands angrily down on the kitchen table.
"In the moment, that's what felt right." Jeongguk said hesitantly, as the elder paced around the room.
A means to an end. A way too make things believable.
Experimenting wasn't a crime.
"We slept together Jeongguk. Does that not mean anything to you?"
No. I'm sorry, but not at all.
"It means something, I'm just not sure what. I just have so many things on my mind right now. And every time we see everyone, I just get confused even more."
"You still want her." Taehyung said, a statement not a question.
The air tense, as silence again filled the room.
The elder looked at Jeongguk, a numb glare on his face, as he waited for an answer. An answer to whether his heart still belonged to someone.
Jeongguk's heart dropped at the mention of Celine.
Her golden eyes, long hair, and full lips. Her witty humor, and special laugh.
It was true, that it was hard to see her with someone else.
With Jimin.
It was hard, to erase your heart of feelings that controlled and warped you for so long like they were nothing.
It hadn't gone away, that ache in his heart for her. He wasn't sure when it would leave.
"Tae-" The younger boy gasped out, feeling his jaw start to shake. The shivers running over his whole body, at the look on the elder's face.
He liked the way Taehyung felt about him. He craved that attention. Knowing that someone wanted him that badly. That he could do no wrong in the other man's eyes.
But the love and acceptance that had been there before seemed to vanish.
Like it had never existed in the first place.
"Admit it." The brunette yelled out harshly, voice like sharp glass.
Jeongguk looked at him, mouth gaping open and closed like a fish. How would he say it? What was it like to break up with a friend...
The last one didn't go so well. He got punched.
"I don't know what I want. Who I want." Jeongguk said slowly, watching as Taehyung let out a humorless laugh.
The black clad man grabbed onto his keys from the kitchen table, swinging them around furiously. His eyes flashing madly, though his heart shattered into a million pieces.
"Well, I can help you narrow your options."
And yet Jeongguk was frozen in his place. Still sitting on the couch, as his friend threatened to leave him for good.
"Taehyung, please just-"
"Just what? Be a sitting duck while you try to figure out whether you still want your ex who fucked your best friend? And is more thank likely going to marry him? Or wait until you figure out that you like girls, more than boys? That I'm just a pity fuck because you're lonely? Or maybe, I'll be fucking keeled over by the time you figure out that I'm the best thing that's ever happened to you."
"Okay." The dark haired man said simply, not even a sorrowful expression painting his face. Instead he kicked up his feet onto the table.
Taehyung's eyes darkened, making the younger boy quiet immediately. The look of rage and spite too much for the younger boy to grasp.
Tae never looked so angry before. So broken.
Why do I destroy everything I touch? And why do I not care to fix it?
"And guess what Jeongguk? I'm not fucking waiting around for you. I've waited long enough. Just to be fucking disappointed."
Jeongguk flinched, at the sound of the slammed door against the frame. Silence settling in, as Taehyung's footsteps disappeared down the hallway.
He deserved every word Taehyung spouted at him.
He didn't deserve Taehyung.
But that didn't stop Jeongguk. Not at all.

(A/N): wow...this chapter. I don't want y'all to be sad, but this is how the story goes.
Update 2021: MOST importantly Jeongguk in this story needs extensive therapy to become a better person. He can't have a redemption arc without it. He shouldn't be with Tae because he would have been abusive in this relationship too. I wish I would've wrote the story this way back in 2018. Thanks
(Btw Tae loves Celine, he's only jealous of the feelings Jeongguk has towards her, not the girl herself)
