THE BURGER SELLER
[ The story of Joe Metheny ]
Joseph Roy Metheny, born on March 2nd, 1995 in Baltimore Maryland, United States was an American serial-killer and rxpist who was reported and alleged to be killing his victims and selling them as human hamburgers.
𝐈 - JOE METHENY
Joe Metheny, a cannxbal and serial-killer, stole the attention and alert of many after appearing on the news in 1996, where he openly admitted to cooking his victims' flesh, kidnapping and r*ping them beforehand. The 62-years-old male (according to Wikipedia) allegedly had a total of five to thirteen victims (though it remains uncertain.)
The killer was tried for murder once. He however, managed to steer clear of his supposed-to-be prison time.
𝐈𝐈 - THE VICTIMS
Although Metheny's victim numbers were quite uncertain, it was reported that the male killed Catherine Magaziner (1994), Randall Brewer and Randy Piker (1995), Kimberly Spicer (1996), and two unidentified sex-workers and a fisherman.
The Murder of Catherine Magiziner - Catherine, a 39-years-old female, was the first victim and murder case that was tied to Metheny (in 1994). The subject was reported to have addiction, and was a sex worker in South Baltimore. In 1996, confirmed by Metheny himself, Catherine Magiziner was indeed murdered and buried by him. It was also admitted that the victim was buried at the worksite where the suspect works as a forklift driver.
A few months later, Metheny disinterred the 39-years-old victim's body and detached her head. The victim's torso was buried in a different grave, Catherine's head was placed in a box before it was discarded along with the trash.
The cannxbal was arrested. After two years, with the help of her dental records and Metheny's confession, the police found Magiziner's body and skull.
The Men Down - Metheny had a girlfriend and a 6-years-old son in 1995, who he lived with in South Baltimore and worked as a truck driver. Thus, there is no doubt that the killer was on the road for long instances of time.
Coming home from work, Metheny found out that his girlfriend left him and took their son with her. The suspect was said to be searching for his son and girlfriend when he stumbled upon two unhoused men. The identities of these two were confirmed to be his next victims; Randall Brewer and Randy Piker. The men had disagreements which led to a very dreadful end. Metheny was reportedly provoked by rage at that moment, therefore, the unpleasant situation led him to kill and disjoint the two victims mercilessly with an axe.
August 2nd, 1995: Piker and Brewer's body were found, which led to Metheny's arrest (a year and a half while he waited for trial) with no bail for murder. The case was brought up to the court in summer, 1996. The case was won over the suspect (unfortunately and eventually) as the jury sided with the fact that he is not guilty due to lack of evidence.
Upon his release, Metheny began his spree of slaughtering people (mostly targeting sex workers) dismembering and selling his victims' flesh as human hamburgers.
Murder of Kimberly Spicer - Kimberly was a 23-years-old female sex worker in South Baltimore. At that time, Metheny was driving a company that made wooden pallets, he was living near his employer in a trailer.
Having the chance, Metheny brought Spicer in his trailer, killing and dismembering her as what the killer did to his previous victims. The discarded parts of Spicer's body were hidden under some wooden pallets Metheny had at work.
Two unidentified sex workers and a fisherman - The same time he had murdered his last two victims before Spicer (Randall Brewer and Randy Piker) Metheny admitted to the fact of assaulting and slaughtering two sex workers the same night after killing Brewer and Piker. That nightmare didn't end with four victims killed, but his last ─ a fisherman.
Metheny said that he allegedly saw a fisherman near the bridge where he committed his crimes. He openly stated as well that he used a metal pipe to kill the innocent man.
𝐈𝐈𝐈 - SERVING FLESH
When Metheny was caught and arrested, he claimed to have eaten his victims' flesh and kept their remains in tupperwares and containers in his fridge. He spoke up truthfully that he indeed mixed their flesh with the meat he sold at his BBQ stand.
He also stated that no customers could possibly taste the difference between pork and human flesh. Controversy had started once Metheny admitted his crimes, where he earned his title of being The Cannxbal.
𝐈𝐕 - CAUGHT AND ARRESTED
The last victim of Metheny was a sex worker named Rita Kemper. The female was kidnapped by the cannibal and brought to the trailer on December 8th, 1996. Thankfully, Kemper escaped before she was slaughtered and went to the police for help. In Kemper's statement, she said Metheny had threatened to kill her and repeat the same process he did with his other victims.
Metheny called his friend to ask for help in concealing Kimberly's body. The friend immediately reported the crime to the police, which caused Metheny to be arrested on December 15th, 1996.
𝐕 - DENIAL OF CLAIMS
Although the exact start of Metheny's killing spree and his motive was undetermined, Metheny claimed to have a "rough and tough" childhood because of his father dying due to a car crash when he was six-years-old. The latter also claimed that his mother worked all day, everyday as the boy would be sent off to other families while his mother worked.
Metheny's mother denied the accusations, the male also lied about his own mother's death which was a false claim. The mom also quoted; “If he was neglected, it was his own fault.”
When early adulthood striked, the serial-killer claimed to have served in Vietnam after joining the military, which was also blamed for his drug addiction. Metheny's military record, however, disagreed with his own statement. It showed that the male had only served for Germany for a short period of time. Along with denying the claims of Metheny's rough childhood, the mother also denied the fact that his son served in Vietnam and blamed his son for the male's own addiction.
𝐕𝐈 - NO REGRETS
Metheny claimed to have no regrets and enjoyed his killing spree during a police confession, and wouldn't dare apologize to the families of the victims who he killed. To him, the apology would be forced and fake if he did so. In his explanation why, he said that God knew about and saw what he did. Metheny was happy to be judged by God as well as the Jury in the court of law.
He said in his statement, “My murder rampage started out as revenge but ended up as a passion for the taste of blood and the overwhelming sense of power one gets for taking the life of another."
Undoubtedly, the killer received a death penalty, life sentence, and 50 years for kidnapping his supposed-to-be-victim Rita Kemper.
He was also charged for the murder of a 28-years-old Toni Lynn Ingrassia. Unfortunately, the case was dropped due to the proclaim lack of evidence.
Metheny's death sentence was overturned on July 24, 2000, and reduced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
On August 5th, 2017, a prison guard found the convict unresponsive in his cell. The authorities later conducted an investigation about Joe Metheny's death. Presumably, no one suspects or undercover foul play regarding his death.
Metheny died at the age of 62 at Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, MD.
