Why Does She Have To Be Dead?

Emily sits on the edge of the pier, staring into the water.  Tears slowly roll down her cheeks.

She knew it.  She knew that something bad would happen. Something bad always happens.

Her body is still buzzing from the pain of Natasha... leaving. Figures. As soon as she lets them back in, they leave. It just goes to show that staying away is the better choice. It's less painful to pretend not to care.

Why couldn't she learn her lesson the first time? Or even the second time? Or the third? Because this is always how it goes. It's a cycle and she never learns. Never.

That's the definition of insanity, isn't it? Doing something over and over again,  expecting a new result. Expecting things could turn out any differently.

She just wants her mom back.

"Do we know if she had any family?" Tony breaks the silence with the question, snapping everyone out of their thoughts.

Steve stays fixed on the horizon, "Yeah. Us."

Thor snaps around, "Why are we talking as if she's dead? We have the stones. Bring her back. C'mon, stop this shit."

Clint squeezes tears away,  "We can't.  It's irreversible."

Thor says something that Emily doesn't hear. Her arm shakes as his voice raises. For the first time since they got back, she speaks, "I saw her. She was at the bottom of that cliff. All alone. Her body was freezing. There was blood everywhere. But you know what? She was smiling." She gets up from her spot on the edge. She places a hand on Clint's shoulder,  "I don't know the specifics of the decision you two had to make but it was her choice. Okay? Not your fault. We can't let it be in vain. We have to make out worth it."

Steve joins her, "We will. "

All six Infinity Stones rest behind safety glass. Robotic arms pick up the Stones and to a new nanotech gauntlet. The gauntlet creates six slots, perfectly sized for the Stones.

Emily hums as they slide into place, "Cool..."

The completed gauntlet sits in a cradle, six Infinity Stones embedded in the back.

Rocket fidgets with some calculations, "All right. The glove's ready.
Question is, who's gonna snap their freaking fingers?"

Thor steps up, walking towards it. "Staring at the thing isn't going to bring everybody back, is it? Look, I'm the strongest Avenger. It's my responsibility. Fate wills it so."

Emily places a hand on his chest, "Can you say with 100% certainty that you're in the best mindset right now? You can concentrate on this one task? You won't think about your mother, or your brother, or Asgard for that matter. As terrible as it sounds, you've lost way too many people to do this. Your emotions are high and you've been drinking since you got here. You mess this up and this is all for nothing. So I ask you, are you truly up to this?"

"It has to be me."

"Dad..." Emily turns to her dad, her expression twisted.

"The radiation is mostly gamma," Bruce rambles on, stopping Emily from speaking. "These almost killed Thanos. No one else can do it. This is why I'm the Hulk. It's my destiny and I-"

"Dad!" She steps forward, taking his hand. "I know. It's okay. Just promise me you'll be careful. I'm not losing anyone else today."

The compound goes into lockdown mode. Everyone stands around Bruce, all prepared for the worst possible situation.

The large green scientist grabs the gauntlet. It expands to fit his hand as he slides it on. As soon as he does energy ripples through Bruce's arm. It crackles around him, his arm decaying instantaneously.

Emily flinches forward instinctively, gnawing on her fingernail.

Bruce grunts, struggling to contain the power. "..I'm..fine!" He lifts his hand up,  snapping.

Bruce collapses onto the ground, his arm completely blackened. Emily rushes for him, examining his arm.

"Don't touch him." Tony zooms in, spraying a white mist all over his arm. Overhead, the security mode rescinds,  showing the beautiful sky. Birds are chirping.

Emily staggers back, losing her footing. She catches herself on Scott who helps her up. "They're back. I can feel it." She laughs breathlessly. "They're all back! You did it! I have to go see this for myself."

"Kid, wait-"

The last thing she sees is the Compound exploding before she flashes away. She lands on Titan. It's even more overgrown and desolate than last time.

"Em?"

Emily holds her breath. A boy in a red Spider-Man suit runs up to her. She wraps her arms around him.  "Pete. I missed you."

"Missed me? You just saw me. Why do you look so old?"

Emily places both her hands on his shoulders, "It's been five years. You were gone. And we have to go. They need our help."

"She's right. They're fighting Thanos."

Emily tenses up, her fists clenching, facing Doctor Strange. Of course, it's him. "We won't make the same mistakes. This time, we win together. We're getting everyone."

Strange nods, "You know who you want?"

"I do. I'll need your help though. There are a lot of people in my phonebook."

Steve stands alone on top of what used to be the Avengers Facility. His face is sullied with dirt, blood, and sweat. Thanos stands triumphant,  his army beaming down from the ships. An army versus a skinny sick kid from Brooklyn. A boy, who never learned to stand back from a fight even when it meant getting pummeled. A man, who stood by his morals no matter what. He stands by himself with only his shield and the hammer of Thor.

There's not a chance in hell he can win. But he has to stand. He has to prove to this Titan that he won't be bullied. He'll fight to the end even if he's doing it alone.

There's a crackle in his com, breaking through the static. "-ap...omin-  ot"

Steve pauses his walk towards death. This time the message is loud and clear.  "Cap. On your left."

A sparkling portal appears, illuminating the battlefield. Sam Wilson flies out. Below him, three silhouettes step out from the light. Shuri, T'challa, and Okoye.

Around him, dozens of more portals holding heroes open up. Dr. Strange, Drax, Korg, Wanda, Bucky, Peter Quill, Valkyrie, Luke Cage, M'Baku, Peter Parker- everyone. People he has never even spoken to come to his aid. Armies to rival Thanos' own.

There's a twinkle in the sky and a blue and gold armor crashes down. The mask lifts, it's Pepper.

Emily joins them in a huge flash of light. With her,  she brings countless more aliens she met on her journey. Even Howard the Duck is there.

She takes her place next to Strange,  who glances at her,  "Is this everyone?"

"I even got my cousin and her friends to show up. How many more people did you want?"

"Avengers!" Steve skips a beat,  calling Mjolnr to his hand. "Assemble."

Thor lets out a war cry and everyone charges. Thanos gives the command and both armies charge at each other.

They collide in a huge crash. It's a battle for the universe. No one's pulling their punches. Losing isn't an option today.
